Expert Advice for Rank Based JEE Counselling
The national level entrance examination JEE Main will be held 4 times in 2026 in the months of February, March, April, and May through online mode. It is the most important exam for engineering aspirants and will take place in 264 cities across India, and also in 9 cities abroad. This year about 9.65 lakh students have filled up application forms for the exam. Students will get their rank in the first week of June 2026. After that, the most critical part of the whole process-Counseling-will start.
Here is detailed information about the JEE Main 2026 Counseling Procedure and schedules. Although the exact date is not announced, the counseling for JEE Main 2026 for admissions to 97 participating institutions through the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams will start in June 2026. It will be conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). IITs, NITs, IIITs, NSITs, and other CFTIs are included in the list.

Process of JEE Counseling
You are not required to visit an institute physically for the counseling. The mode of counseling is online only. You will have to visit the official website https://jeemain.nic.in/, register yourself, and fill up your choices. The following steps are involved.
Steps of JEE Counseling 2026
A candidate will have to attend all following steps to get final allotment confirmation and admission in the desired college and branch.
- Registration: First, the student will have to register online. Go to the official website of JEE Main - https://jeemain.nic.in/ and log in using your JEE Main 2026 Roll Number and password. Read the instructions and hit the 'I Agree' button to open the registration form. Fill in all the details to confirm registration.
- Choice Filling: The second step is Choice Filling. Click the 'Choice Available' button. Select Institute Type, Institute Name, and Academic Program according to your choice. Finally, click on the 'Choice Filling and Locking' option.
- Choice Locking: Here you will find a 'Choice Interchange' button in case you want to make some changes in the sequence of the filled list. A 'Choice Rearrange' button is also there if you want to change the whole list.
- Seat Allotment: Based on your category, applicable reservation norms, your filled choices, and vacant seats, JoSAA will allot you a seat. After a few days of counseling, you will be notified by e-mail and SMS regarding the seat allotment. If you are not satisfied with the college allotted, you need to repeat the same procedure to attend another round of counseling. You can change your choices for the next round.
- In this step, you need to pay the acceptance fees to confirm the allotment of seats through SBI net banking or e-Challan only.
