Process of JEE Counseling
You are not required to visit an institute physically for the counseling. The mode of counseling is online only. You will have to visit the official website https://jeemain.nic.in/, register yourself, and fill up your choices. The following steps are involved.
Steps of JEE Counseling 2026
A candidate will have to attend all following steps to get final allotment confirmation and admission in the desired college and branch.
- Registration: First, the student will have to register online. Go to the official website of JEE Main - https://jeemain.nic.in/ and log in using your JEE Main 2026 Roll Number and password. Read the instructions and hit the 'I Agree' button to open the registration form. Fill in all the details to confirm registration.
- Choice Filling: The second step is Choice Filling. Click the 'Choice Available' button. Select Institute Type, Institute Name, and Academic Program according to your choice. Finally, click on the 'Choice Filling and Locking' option.
- Choice Locking: Here you will find a 'Choice Interchange' button in case you want to make some changes in the sequence of the filled list. A 'Choice Rearrange' button is also there if you want to change the whole list.
- Seat Allotment: Based on your category, applicable reservation norms, your filled choices, and vacant seats, JoSAA will allot you a seat. After a few days of counseling, you will be notified by e-mail and SMS regarding the seat allotment. If you are not satisfied with the college allotted, you need to repeat the same procedure to attend another round of counseling. You can change your choices for the next round.
- Payment of Fees: In this step, you need to pay the acceptance fees to confirm the allotment of seats through SBI net banking or e-Challan only.
- Final Reporting To The Allotted Institute: Finally, you should report at the allocated institution with all the original documents and certificates.
- Spot Seat Allotment: Not necessary, but a spot round of seat allotment is possible if there are vacant seats after the last regular rounds of counseling. For this round, you don't have to register again.

If your JEE (Main) rank is not satisfactory
Students who get low scores in JEE can also get admission in major engineering colleges and universities. There are several well-known private colleges and universities recognized by the government in different states of the country, where students can get admission easily by joining the counseling process organized by the state government. Also, they can get seats in many big private universities by joining the university-level counseling process.
It is natural for parents and students (who are trying to get admission for the first time) that they do not have adequate and comparative information regarding the level of colleges and universities across the country. Many times they also lack information related to the counseling process.
