NEET Exam : Tips and Strategies for Success
Last updated: April 20, 2026

On the principle of "One India One Entry Examination", a pre-examination has been organized since 2016 for admission to MBBS and BDS courses across India. This is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET Exam).
Difference between NEET Exam and AIPMT
Prior to 2016, the medical entrance exam was called the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT). It filled 15 percent of MBBS and BDS seats in Government Medical Colleges as a quota of the Government of India. The remaining 85% of seats were filled by state governments through their own entrance exams, while private colleges conducted separate exams.
Why NEET was needed
Before NEET, students had to take multiple entrance exams for medical admissions. This meant filling many forms, traveling to different places on different dates, and enduring significant stress. The NEET Exam simplifies this process. Now there is only one exam, saving students both time and money. The admission test fee is ₹1400 for the general and OBC categories, while for ST and SC category students it is only ₹750.
Historical efforts of the government and the court
Through the efforts of the Government of India and the Supreme Court of India, a single medical entrance examination for all students has been successfully organized since 2016. This has reduced corruption in entrance examinations and lessened problems for parents. While you may have heard controversies related to fair examination, these disputes are largely settled. NEET has become a strict requirement for any student wishing to study MBBS or BDS in a private or government medical college.
Colleges through NEET Exam
Admission to all government and private medical and dental colleges in India is done solely through the NEET examination, except for three institutions: AIIMS, JIPMER, and AFMC. In government medical colleges, 15% of seats are under the central government quota, while 85% are under the state government quota. Both quotas require students to qualify through the NEET exam.
Types of NEET Exam
There are two types of medical exams: NEET-UG and NEET-PG. The NEET-UG exam is for admission to MBBS and BDS (Undergraduate) courses. The NEET-PG exam is for MS and MD (Post Graduate) courses.
