What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a branch of medical science, often considered under paramedical courses. "Physio" refers to the body, and "therapy" means treatment. It involves step-by-step techniques like exercise, electrotherapy, and massage. A physiotherapist not only provides physical treatment but also mentally empowers patients to fight their conditions.
Courses in Physiotherapy
You can enroll in Diploma, Bachelor, Postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs. The bachelor's course is called BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy). The curriculum typically lasts four and a half years, including a final six-month internship.
MPT (Master of Physiotherapy) is a two-year course where you can specialize. Specializations include Neurological Physiotherapy, Pediatric Physiotherapy, Sports Physiotherapy, Orthopedic Physiotherapy, Ocular Physiotherapy, Postoperative Physiotherapy, and Cardiovascular Physiotherapy.
Admission is available through both government and private colleges. Government colleges usually require qualifying a state or central-level entrance exam. Some private colleges offer direct admission.
Eligibility for Physiotherapy Courses
For the Bachelor Course:
- Completion of 10+2 (Intermediate) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
- Minimum 50% marks.
- Course Duration: 4 years and 6 months (including 6-month internship).
- Age Limit: Minimum 17 years at the time of the entrance exam.
For Masters and Ph.D.: Eligibility is according to university rules.

Course Fees
Fees for physiotherapy courses vary from ₹30,000 to ₹1,00,000 per year, depending on the university. Some institutions offer scholarships based on merit.
Entrance Exams for BPT & MPT
- KIMS (Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed University): Conducts entrance exams annually for bachelor and postgraduate courses. Application forms are available May-June. The exam is usually in late June.
- SVNIRTAR-CET (Swami Vivekananda National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research): Conducts the Common Entrance Test (CET) and Post Graduate Entrance Test (PGET). Application forms come in May-June. The exam is in June.
- Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute: Organizes entrance exams for bachelor-level courses. Application forms are available April-May. The exam is in June.
- JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research): Conducts entrance exams for MD/MS Physiotherapy courses. Application forms are available March-May. Exam dates vary by course.
- IPU CET (Indraprastha University Common Entrance Test): Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University conducts exams for bachelor and master/diploma level courses. Application forms are available in March. The exam is in May.

Good opportunities exist in physiotherapy today. Increasing awareness about fitness has raised demand for professionals. Physiotherapy is also seen as an effective treatment for various conditions with no side effects, making its demand grow daily.
It plays a crucial role in recovering from polio, asthma, post-surgical rehabilitation, and muscular or bone diseases. Physiotherapists are now essential in almost every medical center.
A career is possible not only in hospitals but also in gyms, sports organizations, the army, and other fields where physical fitness is key.

Salary
Early in your career, you can earn ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 per month working in a gym, health center, sports organization, or nursing home. Some organizations retain interns as physiotherapists, paying ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 during this phase.
With experience, you can continue in the same organization at a higher salary, open a private clinic, or work in a government or private hospital.
Starting salary in a government hospital ranges from ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 per month. In a prestigious private hospital, it can be between ₹50,000 and ₹1,00,000 per month. Some hospitals pay based on the number of patients seen.
After about five years of experience, you can start your own practice. You can then charge at least ₹250 to ₹500 per patient per session.
