Start with the published cycle, not an assumed deadline
The Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad publishes MBA and MBA in Business Analytics admissions through the institute’s MBA portal. The latest admission cycle shown in the official pages reviewed for this article is 2026-27. The portal lists applications opening on 24 December 2025 and closing on 31 January 2026, with personal interviews scheduled across four date windows in February and March 2026. Those dates have passed. They are useful only as a dated example of the department’s process, not as an open application window or a forecast for the next intake.
The institute page also lists admission results as waiting-list links, while reporting and semester commencement remained “To be Notified” in the schedule viewed. This is a reminder to separate stages: an application deadline, interview window, result publication, reporting and first semester start are different events. Do not infer an exact reporting date from a published interview schedule. Check the live admission portal and its brochure for the cycle you are applying to.
As of 1 November 2026, the official pages reviewed here showed the 2026-27 cycle and did not provide a verified 2027-28 notice or deadline. The content below therefore explains the last published admission rules with their original CAT year and cycle intact. Applicants preparing for the next intake should wait for that cycle’s official brochure before relying on a test year, eligibility threshold, document date or selection weight. The previous year’s rules can help you understand the route, but they do not establish that the department will repeat them unchanged.
MBA and Business Analytics have different degree conditions
For the 2026-27 MBA programme, the department required a valid CAT 2025 score and a recognised university degree in any discipline. The published academic threshold was first class, or at least 60 per cent marks or a 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale. The page stated a lower threshold of 55 per cent or 5.5 CGPA for candidates in the SC, ST and PwD categories. Final-year students could apply, but admission would be provisional: they had to meet the qualifying-degree requirements before the programme began and provide a provisional completion certificate by 30 September 2026. This is an edition-specific condition; the date should not be carried into a later intake.
MBA in Business Analytics had a narrower degree route in that same notice. Applicants needed a BTech or BE degree in any discipline from a recognised university or institute, with at least 60 per cent aggregate marks or a 6.0 CGPA out of 10. The notice set 55 per cent or 5.5 CGPA for SC, ST and PwD applicants. Final-year BTech or BE students could also apply provisionally under the stated completion condition, and applicants still needed a valid CAT 2025 score. A candidate who satisfies the general MBA degree rule should not assume that it also satisfies the Business Analytics degree requirement.
The 2026-27 admission page allows candidates to apply for both programmes. That is a choice of application scope, not a promise of admission to both. Before paying, compare the degree condition for each programme with your own qualifying credential, confirm that the CAT year matches the notice, and check how the current cycle defines category documents. If you are in the final year, note the qualifying-degree completion condition and keep the evidence of completion available. The next brochure may change the test year, eligibility language, dates or required documents, so use it as the operative reference when released.
Shortlisting and final selection use separate stages
For 2026-27, the department said CAT percentile would determine shortlisting for interview. A CAT score therefore served two roles in the published process: it was a basic eligibility requirement, and percentile was considered for the shortlist. The department then described a weighted final-selection calculation. Personal Interview carried 40 per cent, CAT percentile 35 per cent, past academic records 10 per cent, industrial experience 10 per cent, and female-candidate status 5 per cent. These components total 100 per cent. The published weights show that the interview and CAT together accounted for three quarters of the final score, while academic record, experience and the stated gender component made up the rest.
That arithmetic can help applicants decide where preparation is useful, but it does not reveal the CAT percentile needed for an interview, the applicant pool, or a likely offer threshold. The sources reviewed do not provide those values. A candidate should not convert the 35 per cent CAT weight into a predicted cutoff or treat a high CAT result as an admission guarantee. The department’s page describes a method, not an individual outcome.
The selection page also provides scoring bands for academic records and industrial experience. For candidates with a completed degree, it maps school and graduation performance to points; for candidates still pursuing a bachelor’s degree, it provides a separate school-performance table. Experience points rise across the listed duration bands, with 4 points for 12 to 24 months, 7 for more than 24 through 36 months, and 10 for more than 36 months. These are components of the 2026-27 calculation only. They should be read alongside the full table and the current brochure, especially if your marks are expressed as CGPA or your experience is close to a band boundary.
Prepare examples of work and responsibilities that you can discuss in an interview, but do not assume that employment length substitutes for the degree requirement. Likewise, the 5 per cent component is a scored element in the 2026-27 selection page; it is not a separate reserved-seat count in the admission process. For reservation and seat distribution, use the current brochure’s own section and category table rather than inferring seat allocation from the selection formula.
Follow the portal instructions for forms and supporting records
The institute’s 2026-27 instructions required candidates to submit the online form through the institute portal during the notified schedule and pay the application charge through its online payment gateway. The applicant was advised to print and retain a copy of the submitted form. The admission pages listed a recent photograph and signature, qualifying-degree marksheets, a valid CAT scorecard, applicable caste or EWS documentation, a PwD certificate where relevant, and proof of industrial experience when applicable. The exact list depends on the candidate’s situation; a document that is not applicable to you should not be treated as a universal requirement.
The source specified an OBC-NCL certificate format and an issue-date condition for that 2026-27 cycle. Such document dates are particularly time-sensitive. Do not reuse the 2025 certificate cutoff or assume that a certificate valid for one admission year remains acceptable in a later year. Check the new annexure, issuing-authority requirements and category instructions before submitting. The same applies to EWS income documentation and disability certification: follow the current institute notice for the prescribed format and issuing authority.
The institute stated that selected candidates who completed the interview would be admitted provisionally after paying the admission fee. It also required candidates to report in person at IIT (ISM), Dhanbad on the scheduled date, time and venue with original documents; failure to report as directed meant the candidate would not be considered afterwards for admission. The 2026-27 page left reporting date and semester commencement as “To be Notified” at the time reflected in the captured schedule. This distinction matters for planning travel and arranging original records: do not book around an interview date as though it were the joining date.
Use the admission portal for the current form and schedule, the brochure for eligibility and document rules, and the official contact details for questions the published material does not answer. The admission page lists the department’s email as [email protected] and its office phone as 0326-2235662. Keep payment confirmation, form printout and correspondence together. If a portal payment appears delayed, follow the department’s reconciliation instructions before paying again; the 2026-27 fee page warned that reconciliation could take 7 to 10 days.
What a 2027 applicant should verify when the next notice appears
The 2026-27 schedule is not a current deadline. Before applying in a later year, check that the institute has published a new session label, CAT year, application opening and closing dates, interview plan, result timeline and reporting instructions. Then confirm the degree rule for the exact programme. MBA and MBA in Business Analytics did not share identical degree requirements in the last published brochure, even though both used a CAT score.
Next, compare your marks and category evidence with the new wording. Check whether the notice uses percentage, CGPA or a first-class formulation; look for rules for final-year applicants and the date by which their qualifying degree must be completed. Read the current reservation and certificate annexures before uploading. Finally, review the selection weights and any scoring table again. A changed interview share or CAT year could alter how you prepare, and old experience bands should not be assumed to remain in force.
The official 2026-27 portal and brochure remain useful for understanding the department’s last published process. For an actual application, the newest official notice controls. If the next session has not been announced, treat its deadline and eligibility details as unknown rather than copying the previous year’s dates. This page covers the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering’s MBA routes at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; it does not describe admission to the institute’s engineering, science or other programmes.
