Read the published admission guide below. Keep each programme, admission year and counselling-merit scale separate when interpreting historical figures.
Compare cutoffs for the same course, quota, category, domicile and round.
The latest official IKG-PTU cutoff tables located for this guide are from 2025-26. They show round-wise closing merit ranks for specific course, campus, category and quota combinations; they are not a single university-wide cutoff. For one like-for-like example, the B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) row for the university’s Main Campus, Kapurthala, General category and Punjab quota lists a maximum rank of 1,580 in Round 1 and 810 in Round 2. That is a 770-place movement in the reported maximum rank between those two published rounds. It is historical evidence, not a prediction for 2027-28.
Both figures come from IKG-PTU’s official Round 1 result PDF and Round 2 result PDF. The table headers identify the institute, branch, category, state quota, maximum rank and seat count. The row names “I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University Main Campus, Kapurthala,” so this comparison is not an affiliated-college cutoff. The official files label the programme “B.Tech. (Computer Science & Engineering),” the category “General,” and the quota “Punjab.” They list the same row in both rounds.
The subtraction is 1,580 minus 810, or 770 rank places. The seat count shown for that row also moves from 153 to 118, a difference of 35. These are two separate fields in the published tables. They do not establish why the values changed: the files do not provide a row-level explanation of seat availability, candidate choices, withdrawals or the mechanics that produced the later result. Do not read the figures as a guaranteed trend that later rounds always close at a lower numerical rank. They describe only these two records.
IKG-PTU’s result calls the field “Max Rank.” It is a counselling merit rank in that result table. Do not relabel it as a JEE Main All India Rank, percentile, marks score or a national closing rank unless the relevant official admission notice explicitly makes that connection. A rank is useful only when its basis matches your own. Before comparing your position, confirm the counselling system, qualifying-examination merit basis, course, institution/campus, category and quota.
This example is for the General category under Punjab quota. It should not be used as the benchmark for General Other, a reserved category, TFW, a lateral-entry seat, another branch, or a different IKG-PTU campus. In Round 1, the same PDF places General Other CSE at a different maximum rank and lists a separate seat count. TFW is also a separately named CSE row. Those are distinct allocation pools. Combining them would produce a number that belongs to no one applicant’s comparison set.
The distinction between IKG-PTU Main Campus and the wider university system matters as well. The result files contain many institutions and campuses, including IKG-PTU-affiliated colleges and other universities. A search result headed “PTU cutoff” can therefore conceal a different college. Locate the exact institute row in the source PDF before using a value. For this example, the row names the Main Campus in Kapurthala; it does not represent every IKG-PTU-affiliated college or every constituent campus.
Treat the 2025-26 pair as a historical reference point for the exact row shown. It can help you understand the scale and the format of the official table, but it cannot tell you whether a 2027-28 applicant will receive that branch. Intake, applications, preferences, eligibility, seat allocation and round rules can differ by year. The two-row movement is not a probability model, and it does not mean a rank of 1,580 will secure admission in a future round.
As of this guide’s research on 4 November 2026, IKG-PTU’s Centralized Online Counselling page for 2026-27 states that the university is authorized to conduct counselling for specified AICTE/PCI/COA-approved courses on the basis of inter-se merit of the qualifying examination. That page describes the 2026-27 session and includes separate links for the student portal, procedure, schedules, seat matrices and notices. It does not establish the 2027-28 merit basis or calendar. Use the live page and the applicable year’s official brochure and notifications when that cycle opens; do not carry 2026-27 rules forward without confirmation.
The 2025-26 PDFs remain the latest official round-wise cutoff tables located for this article. No 2026-27 round-wise cutoff result was verified in the materials reviewed, so no current-cycle closing rank is stated. This is a research boundary, not proof that no later notice exists. Before making a choice, check the university’s admission page and counselling portal for a newer result, corrigendum or revised seat matrix. If a new PDF appears, compare only rows that match the same campus, programme, category, quota and counselling round. Keep the source verification date with your notes.
If your rank is numerically stronger than an old row’s maximum, that may be a useful reason to investigate the option, but it is not a guarantee: the row’s year and allocation conditions still differ. If it is weaker, the historical figure alone cannot rule you out in another year or category. Build a preference list from current eligibility and current official seat information, and include alternatives whose costs, location and programme fit you. The strongest comparison is narrow and reproducible: the same university campus, same course, same category and quota, and same round across dated official results.
