IIT Hyderabad admission routes for 2027-28
IIT Hyderabad does not use one application form or one entrance test for every programme. The route depends on the degree: undergraduate applicants enter through national entrance and counselling systems, while postgraduate and doctoral applicants follow institute and department notices. For a 2027-28 planning decision, separate the publication edition from the latest dated call. The institute has posted January 2027 postgraduate and PhD admissions, but those notices do not announce every July 2027 or later 2027-28 intake. Begin with the IITH admissions pages and then open the specific programme notice.
The undergraduate catalogue lists BTech degrees in fields including Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Computational Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, IC Design & Technology, Industrial Chemistry, Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. It presents Bachelor of Design separately. The practical first step is therefore to choose a degree and verify its route; BTech applicants do not apply through individual department forms.
At postgraduate level, the institute lists MTech, MDes, MSc and MA programmes, as well as PhD. MSc admission is through JAM, while MTech routes and selection vary by department and category. MDes has its own Design admissions process. PhD applications use an institute portal with department-specific brochures and criteria. Treat each programme brochure as controlling for eligibility and selection; a general page may only summarise the process.
BTech and BDes: entrance exam, counselling and checks
IITH states that admission to its BTech programmes is through IIT-JEE Advanced. In practice, the applicant must qualify through the national examination route and then follow the central counselling process for seat allocation. An exam result alone is not an admission: candidates must enter choices, track allotments, complete the stated verification and acceptance steps, and meet the payment deadline. The institute’s undergraduate page links JEE Advanced, important dates, admission forms, previous-year cutoffs, fees and hostel information. Use those links alongside JoSAA’s current notices so the exam, counselling and institute instructions remain aligned.
For a cutoff comparison, check programme, counselling round, seat type, gender pool and rank convention together. Open-category closing ranks are typically reported as Common Rank List ranks; reserved-category rows use the relevant category-rank convention. A closing rank describes the last allotment under a specific set of filters. It is a planning reference, not a promise that the same rank will secure a seat in another round or year. JoSAA maintains a current Opening and Closing Ranks page and a separate previous-year archive; use the archive only as historical evidence, then return to the live cycle for actual choices and deadlines.
BDes is a distinct route. The IITH undergraduate page links to the Department of Design rather than placing BDes under the BTech exam statement. Applicants should use the current Design notice to verify the accepted design entrance score, qualifying-degree rules, portfolio or test requirements, interview process, application window and number of specialisations they may select. The sources reviewed here do not establish 2027-28 BDes dates, so an older flyer should not be treated as the coming year’s schedule.
MTech, MSc, MDes and MA: check the exact category
The January 2027 regular PG call shows why applicants should not assume one MTech selection rule. IITH lists department brochures for programmes including Artificial Intelligence, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Smart Mobility, and an online Heritage Science and Technology programme. Its general research-assistantship eligibility includes qualifying degrees with first class plus GATE, or specified research experience at IITH or work experience in industry/R&D. The page also states an exception for BTech students from IITs and four-year BS students of IISc with CGPA 8.0 or above. For that call, selection is by an entrance examination and/or interview. These rules belong to the posted intake; they do not establish future July 2027 criteria.
MTech offers may be Ministry of Education-supported, research assistantship, project-funded, self-sponsored, government or industry-sponsored, or another department-defined category. Those labels can change eligibility, selection, funding and fee obligations. The CSE department’s July 2026 admissions page, for example, says it applies only to CSE and Networks and Information Security, and directs candidates to separate brochures for its categories. Read the brochure linked from the exact department and session, not a neighbouring department’s notice or a search result. Keep one email address for all application communications and record each application ID if applying to multiple programmes.
IITH’s postgraduate catalogue lists MSc Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Medical Physics, and states that admission to the listed MSc programmes is through JAM. MDes follows the Design admissions page. The catalogue names MA in Developmental Studies and MA in Health, Gender & Society, but the material reviewed here does not establish one shared selection rule for both; consult each live programme call before deciding eligibility.
PhD: institute portal, department criteria
The January 2027 PhD call gives a concrete example of the application sequence. The institute page sets the last date as 10 November 2026 at 5:00 PM IST, links a general eligibility document and Ministry of Education vacant positions, and tells candidates to consult department brochures for research areas and admission criteria. Departments listed include engineering, science, design, liberal arts, sustainability and interdisciplinary programmes. A central portal simplifies submission, but it does not make eligibility identical across departments.
Before applying, match your qualifying degree and subject to the exact department brochure, then check whether the call is regular, project-supported or sponsored. Review the selection stages and any interview, test or research-area requirements. Submit only the documents requested by that call and save the application receipt. The institute lists an academic query channel and a separate contact for portal issues; use the relevant channel if a requirement or technical step is unclear. A January 2027 deadline should not be copied into a later 2027-28 call. Wait for that session’s official notice if you are applying later.
Application checklist and next steps
There is no single verified document list or application fee that applies to every IITH degree. The current programme notice determines whether you need entrance-score details, academic transcripts, category or experience evidence, a portfolio, research material, interview attendance or other records. Check the online form and brochure before paying; do not assume a fee amount from another programme. Use the official portal linked from IITH or the responsible counselling authority.
Admission also has a second financial step after selection. The institute links a seat-acceptance and refund policy for postgraduate programmes, while the undergraduate page links its fee schedule. These are distinct from an application fee and from later semester charges. Confirm the current schedule for the programme, category and entrant status, and keep the payment receipt. A 2026 semester circular is useful only as dated context, not as a 2027-28 quote.
A reliable sequence is: identify the degree and intake; confirm eligibility in the current brochure; note every exam, portal, RSVP, test, interview and counselling date; prepare the requested documents; apply through the exact official link; and monitor the institute and department pages for shortlists, selection and acceptance instructions. For BTech, keep JoSAA dates and choices in view. For PG and PhD, check department notices as well as the central portal. A shortlist is not a confirmed seat, and an offer becomes actionable only after completing the prescribed acceptance process.
