IIT Hyderabad offers a wide range of engineering and science subjects, but programme choice should come before a fee comparison. Its undergraduate catalogue lists BTech degrees in Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Computational Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, IC Design & Technology, Industrial Chemistry, Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Bachelor of Design is presented separately. This breadth gives applicants options across established disciplines and interdisciplinary areas, but a course title alone does not explain curriculum, eligibility or career direction. Read the department curriculum and admission notice before ranking preferences.
At postgraduate level, the institute lists regular and online MTech/MDes offerings, MSc, MA and PhD. The published MTech catalogue spans engineering specialisations, design, entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary programmes. MSc options include Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Medical Physics; the catalogue says listed MSc admissions use JAM. The same institution-wide page offers programme-level links rather than one uniform degree structure. Duration, project/research requirements, whether a programme is online, and the funding category can all affect both cost and fit. For MTech, a Ministry of Education-supported place, a self-sponsored place and a sponsored or project route may have different selection and fee treatment. Compare the named category, not just the department name.
IITH’s Fee Structure page links the July-December 2026 schedule and an official seat-acceptance and refund policy. The circular is not a single annual tuition price. Its first pages separate newly enrolled UG, PG and PhD students from students already enrolled, then further distinguish admission batch, category, programme type and accommodation status. Before comparing amounts, identify five things: degree level, entrant versus continuing status, admission batch, regular or sponsored category, and hostel/day-scholar status where relevant. The circular itself gives those as the steps for finding the applicable row.
The figures below are useful for understanding the structure, but they are a dated July-December 2026 schedule, not the 2027-28 amount. For a new Indian UG student in the GEN/OBC column, the page 2 grand total is ₹1,68,993 for that semester schedule, made up of ₹19,000 one-time charges, ₹1,48,105 semester fee and ₹1,888 annual medical insurance. The ₹1,00,000 tuition component is only one part of the semester fee. In the SC/ST/PH column, the listed tuition is zero and the grand total is ₹68,993, including the same one-time fee and insurance. These totals include hostel and mess components; the circular says all UG students are expected to stay in hostels.
That example also illustrates why “tuition fee” and “amount payable” should not be used interchangeably. The UG semester total includes registration, examination, gymkhana, medical, IT, sports, laboratory and research, transport and health-check charges, student welfare, hostel and mess. The one-time total includes a refundable security deposit of ₹6,000 alongside joining and student-activity charges. The circular prices mess at ₹130 per day for 111 days in that semester schedule and says it is subject to change. A student should therefore budget from the relevant total and check the payment deadline, while separately noting which deposits may be refundable and which components may vary.
The July-December 2026 circular’s new PG entrant table groups regular MTech, MSc, MDes and MA students, then gives separate columns for sponsored MTech, self-sponsored MTech/MDes and Medical Physics MSc. For regular GEN/OBC entrants, the listed grand total is ₹86,583 for that semester schedule; for SC/ST/PH it is ₹74,583. In those regular columns the semester tuition is ₹12,000 and zero respectively. The table separately lists ₹1,888 annual insurance. These numbers are not automatically applicable to a different admission batch or a later 2027-28 intake.
A category change can move the total substantially. For example, the same new PG table lists ₹3,14,583 for self-sponsored MTech/MDes, with ₹2,40,000 tuition under the stated 12-credit-per-semester basis at ₹20,000 per credit. Sponsored MTech has a separate ₹1,11,583 total, and the circular says the industry or organisation must sponsor the candidate’s tuition; submitting only a no-objection certificate is not adequate for that classification. Project MTech students are stated to pay the regular-student fee. Check the exact programme brochure and fee column together before treating a category label as a funding guarantee.
PhD is also not represented by a single figure. The same circular separates hostellers, day scholars and external students, and GEN/OBC from SC/ST/PH where relevant. For newly enrolled July 2026 PhD hostellers it lists grand totals of ₹84,583 for GEN/OBC and ₹74,583 for SC/ST/PH; day-scholar totals are lower because the listed hostel and mess items are zero. External students have their own column. The circular also excludes certain hostel/mess security deposits for day scholars and external students. These are row-specific payable amounts for that semester, not a multi-year doctoral cost estimate.
IITH directs students to pay semester charges through its ePay portal and to save the electronic receipt. Its fee page also links the seat-acceptance fee and refund policy. Treat these as separate stages: an admission/counselling seat-acceptance payment may have its own withdrawal rules, while the semester circular itemises joining fees, semester charges, refundable deposits and annual insurance. Read the policy attached to your offer and the current fee schedule before making a payment; do not infer refundability from a label other than the circular’s explicit refundable deposit line.
For a 2027-28 applicant, the most useful action is to keep the 2026 circular as a cost-composition reference, then replace every amount with the schedule issued for the relevant 2027-28 entrant category. The fee index is the official update point and currently links July-December 2026. The page also provides the payment portal and lists banks on campus that students may contact about education loans. A bank listing is not a promise of loan approval or a specific rate; compare lenders’ eligibility, collateral, repayment terms and processing time independently.
Before accepting an offer, make a simple term-by-term budget from the correct programme row. Separate tuition from the payable semester total; include one-time charges only in the first term; distinguish annual insurance from each-semester charges; and confirm whether accommodation and mess are included or priced separately for your status. For sponsored programmes, verify who pays tuition and what the sponsor must document. For continuing students, use the row for your admission batch rather than the newly enrolled schedule. The live official circular and refund policy should decide the payment, not a prior-year summary or a third-party estimate.
