Punjab Engineering College (PEC) in Chandigarh is a study in contrasts. It’s an institution with a legacy that includes astronauts and Silicon Valley founders, yet its hostels are famously dated and its official NAAC grade is a surprisingly low B+. For students with a JEE Main rank between 8,000 and 25,000, it presents a compelling, if imperfect, choice: a century-old reputation, a strong coding culture, and solid placements in a well-planned city, all wrapped in infrastructure that hasn’t fully kept pace. The 2024 placement average of ₹13.61 LPA tells one story; the 65.7% placement rate for eligible students tells another. This is a college where what you get out depends heavily on what branch you’re in and how proactively you navigate its opportunities.

Courses and Academic Programs at Punjab Engineering College

PEC offers a fairly standard set of B.Tech programs, but with a couple of notable exceptions. Alongside the usual suspects—CSE, ECE, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical—it provides Aerospace Engineering, a rare specialization in the region, and Materials & Metallurgical Engineering. Newer additions include Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The total undergraduate intake is around 700-800 per year. The academic structure is rigorous, with a mandatory 6-month internship in the sixth semester that frequently converts into Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs). That’s a smart, industry-aligned move.

Faculty strength is a plus, with over 90% of the 120+ permanent professors holding PhDs, many from IITs or foreign universities. The 10-point relative grading system keeps competition sharp. You’ll find MoUs with names like Siemens and Microsoft, but the real academic culture is driven internally by a strong peer network, especially in circuital branches.

PEC Placements: Packages, Recruiters & Reality Check

The official placement report for 2024-25 requires a bit of unpacking. The headline average package is ₹13.61 LPA, a dip from the previous year’s ₹15.97 LPA, reflecting broader market trends. The median package of ₹12.0 LPA is a more stable figure to consider. But the real story is in the distribution. Three students in circuital branches bagged an impressive ₹61.02 LPA, while the branch-wise averages show a clear hierarchy: CSE at ₹16.7 LPA, ECE at ₹15.6 LPA, and Electrical at ₹12.9 LPA.

The most critical number, however, is the placement percentage. As of mid-2024, about 65.7% of eligible students (456 out of 694) had secured an on-campus offer. That gap between the average package and the placement rate is the reality check. It signals that while top performers and those in high-demand branches do very well, students in core or less-in-demand branches face a tougher market, often pivoting to consulting, higher studies, or government exams. The recruiter list is stellar—Google, Microsoft, Amazon, JP Morgan, Airbus—which validates the college’s brand. The internship program is a standout, with a highest monthly stipend of ₹1.87 lakhs and over 120 PPOs last cycle.

Fees and Financial Aid at PEC

For a government institution, PEC’s fees are moderate but not negligible. The annual tuition for B.Tech general category students hovers between ₹1.76 and ₹1.88 lakhs. Add hostel and mess charges of approximately ₹81,500 per year, and a one-time admission fee of around ₹19,000. Over four years, you’re looking at a total cost of ₹10.5 to ₹12 lakhs, inclusive of basic living expenses.

Financial aid is available, primarily through government channels. SC/ST students with requisite income certificates get a full tuition fee waiver. There are also merit-cum-means scholarships for the top 5-10% of the batch. Most students apply for state or central post-matric scholarships through their respective portals. It’s adequate, but don’t expect a plethora of private, college-specific scholarships.

PEC Admissions: Eligibility, Cutoffs & Selection Process

Admission to the B.Tech program is exclusively through JEE Main. The seat allocation is split evenly: 50% through the national JoSAA/CSAB counseling for All India Quota, and 50% through the Joint Admission Committee (JAC) Chandigarh for the Home State/Chandigarh quota. This local quota is a significant advantage for students who completed their 12th grade in Chandigarh.

The 2024 opening ranks (Round 1, General AI) give a clear picture of demand: CSE closed around 7,800, ECE around 15,000, Aerospace around 21,000, and Electrical around 24,000. These ranks place PEC firmly in the conversation with mid-tier NITs. For M.Tech, GATE scores are processed via CCMT, and for the MBA program, CAT/MAT scores are accepted. NRI admissions are handled separately through the DASA scheme.

Campus, Hostels and Student Life at PEC

This is where student reviews get sharply critical. The 146-acre campus in Sector 12 is green and well-located in Chandigarh. The infrastructure for academics—labs, the central library with over 1.2 lakh books, high-speed Wi-Fi (patchy in old hostels)—is generally good. The sports facilities, including an Olympic-size pool, are a major plus.

The hostels, though, are the biggest gripe. There are six in total (four for boys, two for girls), but many are aging buildings from the 1950s and 60s. Reviews consistently cite small rooms, poor ventilation, and slow administrative response to maintenance issues. The girls' hostels (Kalpana Chawla, Vindhya) are reported to be better maintained but have stricter curfews. And then there’s the mess food, particularly in first-year hostels, which is often described as a “survival test.” The location in Chandigarh—safe, clean, with great connectivity—offsets a lot of these campus-centric drawbacks. The annual fest, PECFEST, is a major highlight, drawing crowds from across North India.

Student Reviews: What PEC Alumni Really Think

Talking to students and scouring forums like Reddit’s r/Btechtards and Quora reveals a consistent pattern. The praise is fervent for the coding culture and peer group. Seniors are supportive, the competitive programming scene is active, and the “PEC tag” still carries weight in corporate and government corridors. The legacy of alumni like Kalpana Chawla and Vinod Khosla is a real point of pride.

The complaints are equally specific. Hostel infrastructure and mess food top the list. The bureaucratic administration frustrates many. A strict 75% attendance policy is enforced in most departments, which can feel restrictive. On placements, the consensus is clear: the high averages are real for CSE/ECE, but students in Civil, Production, or Metallurgy need to be prepared to hustle for off-campus opportunities or aim for GATE/UPSC. It’s not a cakewalk for everyone.

Verdict: Is Punjab Engineering College (PEC) Worth It?

PEC is a solid, legacy-driven engineering college with a location advantage that’s hard to beat. It’s best for students with JEE Main ranks between 8,000 and 25,000 who value a strong, self-driven peer network over plush infrastructure. If you’re aiming for CSE, ECE, or Electrical, the placement outcomes and coding culture justify the choice, especially when compared to NITs in similar rank bands. The Aerospace program is a unique option for those passionate about the field. However, if you’re admitted to a core branch like Civil or Production, temper your immediate placement expectations and be ready to leverage the college’s reputation for higher studies or government exams. Ultimately, PEC offers a reputable, affordable engineering degree in a great city, but it asks you to overlook some significant quality-of-life compromises on campus to get it.
