Raj Engineering College (REC)

Raj Engineering College (REC) in Jodhpur is a private institution that presents a classic case of conflicting data. On one hand, you have a college that claims NBA accreditation and a Gold Medal from its affiliating university. On the other, the official placement report for 2023 shows just 5 out of 43 students securing jobs. That's a stark reality check for any prospective student. Established in the early 2000s, REC operates on a 25-acre campus off the Jaipur-Jodhpur highway, affiliated with Bikaner Technical University (BTU) and Rajasthan Technical University (RTU). It's a college built on core engineering disciplines—Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Mining—with a surprisingly low total intake. For families in western Rajasthan looking for an affordable, infrastructure-focused option with manageable entry barriers, REC is on the radar. But the decision requires a clear-eyed look at the numbers, not just the brochure.

Courses and Academic Programs at Raj Engineering College

REC’s academic offering is straightforward and leans heavily into traditional and regional core engineering. The B.Tech program is the sole undergraduate offering, with no postgraduate or doctoral courses mentioned. The seat matrix tells its own story: Civil, Electrical, and Mining Engineering have 30 seats each, Mechanical has just 15, and Automobile Engineering has a larger 60-seat intake. Other specializations like Computer Science and IT are mentioned but lack specific intake data. That small batch size—105 students across four core branches—is a double-edged sword. It can mean more individual attention, but it also limits peer diversity and campus vibrancy.

The college emphasizes a practical approach, with projects, workshops, and industrial visits integrated into the curriculum. They follow a standard 10-point grading system with SGPA and CGPA, requiring a minimum CGPA of 5.00 to graduate. The academic calendar is set semester-wise. Faculty numbers are inconsistently reported, ranging from 27 to 52, with a claimed student-faculty ratio as low as 5:1. While student reviews often praise teaching quality and helpful faculty, some note that not all teachers are specialized in their subjects. The college’s notable academic achievement is a Gold Medal from Bikaner Technical University for securing first rank in B.Tech (Mining Engineering) in 2023—a decent outcome for a state-run institution.

Raj Engineering College Placements: Packages, Companies & Reality Check

This is the section that demands the most scrutiny. The data conflict is impossible to ignore. The college’s official placement report for 2023, which is the most concrete data point available, states that 5 out of 43 registered students were placed. That’s an 11.6% placement rate. Yet, other unverified sources and some student reviews claim placement rates as high as 85%. You have to decide which number you trust.

The package figures have also seen a dip. In 2023, the highest package was ₹4.5 LPA with an average of ₹3 LPA. For 2025, those numbers fell to ₹3.25 LPA (highest) and ₹2.52 LPA (average). There’s no median package data, which is often a more reliable metric than an average skewed by one high offer.

The recruiter list includes names like HCL, Amazon, Larsen & Toubro, Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), and Shree Cement. It’s a mix of IT, core engineering, and public sector units. However, the frequency and volume of hiring from these marquee names are unclear. The claim of "100% students getting internships" is also unverified and should be taken with a grain of salt given the placement stats.

The verdict? Placement support exists, but outcomes are inconsistent and below national averages. For core branches like Mining or Civil, local industry ties with firms like Shree Cement might offer a pathway. But if high-paying, mass IT placements are your primary goal, REC is not a reliable bet. You’re largely on your own.

Fees and Financial Aid at Raj Engineering College

Affordability is REC’s strongest card. The total tuition fee for a four-year B.Tech program is approximately ₹1.6 lakhs, translating to about ₹40,000 per year. That’s significantly lower than most private engineering colleges across India. There’s a one-time admission fee of ₹7,500 (which includes refundable caution money).

However, the complete cost picture must include hostel and mess. Hostel fees are ₹48,000 per year (non-AC, double/triple sharing), and mess charges are another ₹25,000 annually. Do the math:

• 4-Year Tuition & Fees: ₹1,60,000 + ₹7,500 = ₹1,67,500
• 4-Year Hostel & Mess: (₹48,000 + ₹25,000) * 4 = ₹2,92,000
• Estimated Total Cost: ₹4,59,500

So, while tuition is cheap, living on campus nearly triples the cost. The college mentions scholarships for meritorious and underprivileged students, but specific details, amounts, or eligibility criteria aren’t provided. You’ll need to contact the administration directly for clarity.

Admissions: Eligibility, Cutoffs & Selection Process

Admission is merit-based through state and national entrance exams. REC accepts scores from JEE Main, RPET (Rajasthan Pre Engineering Test), and the state’s REAP (Rajasthan Engineering Admission Process) counseling. The process is centralized through REAP for most seats.

The key dates revolve around the state calendar. For the 2026 cycle, REAP registration typically runs from late May to early July. JEE Main Session 2 results are expected by April. After the exams, a merit list is prepared, followed by counseling rounds where you can choose REC based on your rank.

Notably, there’s a provision for direct admission under the management quota. This is a common backchannel in private colleges, but it usually comes at a premium cost and outside the transparent counseling process. No cutoff ranks are publicly available, which suggests the bar for admission through REAP is not exceptionally high, especially for the less crowded branches.

Campus, Hostels and Student Life

Spread over a reported 25 acres, the campus infrastructure is frequently cited as a positive by students. It’s Wi-Fi enabled, with modern classrooms and labs for each department. The library holds over 7,500 books and offers an e-library section.

Hostel life gets good reviews. Separate boys' and girls' hostels (200 seats each) offer double or triple non-AC rooms with basic furniture. The environment is described as "homely," and the vegetarian mess food is considered nutritious. Additional amenities include a canteen, a Cafe Coffee Day outlet, a health center, and college bus transport covering Jodhpur.

For recreation, there’s a well-equipped gym and facilities for cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, and indoor games like table tennis and chess. What’s conspicuously absent from reviews is any mention of major annual fests, active clubs, or a vibrant cultural scene. The social life seems to revolve around sports and hostel camaraderie rather than organized events.

Student Reviews: What Raj Engineering College Alumni Really Think

Synthesizing student sentiment reveals a clear pattern. The positives are consistent: good infrastructure, decent hostel facilities, and helpful faculty who complete the syllabus on time. For many students from the region, it meets basic expectations for a learning environment.

The criticisms are equally consistent and serious. Placements are the biggest concern, with many labeling them "average" or directly pointing to the low placement rates. Another recurring point is a perceived lack of a strong, competitive study culture on campus. Some reviews also hint that not all faculty are experts in their field, which can affect depth of learning.

There’s no significant chatter about management issues or ragging, which is a positive. The overall feeling from reviews is that REC is a functional, no-frills college that won’t surprise you with excellence but also won’t fail you on basics—except, perhaps, in securing you a job.

Verdict: Is Raj Engineering College Worth It?

Raj Engineering College is a specific solution for a specific type of student. It’s worth serious consideration if you are a student from Rajasthan or nearby regions, have a moderate entrance rank (likely through REAP), want to pursue a core engineering branch like Civil or Mining, and are operating on a tight budget. The low tuition fee is a major advantage, and the infrastructure is reportedly solid. If your family has local industry connections or your goal is simply to obtain an affordable degree, REC can serve that purpose.

However, you should look elsewhere if your primary aim is high-campus placements, especially in IT or software roles. The placement data is objectively weak. The college also isn’t a fit if you’re seeking a nationally competitive peer group, a vibrant fest culture, or a degree from a highly ranked institution. It doesn’t appear in the NIRF Rankings, and its academic reach is regional.

In short, REC is a pragmatic, cost-effective choice for locally-focused, core engineering education. Manage your expectations on placements, be prepared to drive your own career hustle, and it can be a viable launchpad. But go in with eyes wide open to the numbers, not just the promises.
