Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy in Chandigarh’s Sector 26 has been a quiet, steady fixture in North India’s pharmacy education scene since 1982. It’s not the place for glossy brochures promising corporate R&D jobs. Instead, it’s a disciplined, no-frills institution run by the Sikh Educational Society that has built a reputation for turning out competent, job-ready pharmacy and lab technicians at a cost that’s almost unbelievably low. If you’re looking for a practical, affordable launchpad into the healthcare sector—and you understand a Diploma is a starting point, not a final destination—this college has been doing exactly that for over four decades.

Courses and Academic Programs at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy

This is a diploma-focused institution. Don’t come looking for a B.Pharm or M.Pharm degree—they don’t offer them. The academic model is straightforward, practical, and geared toward immediate employability. The two core programs are the Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm, 2 years, 60 seats) and the Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (DMLT, 3 years, 120 seats). Eligibility is based on your 10+2 marks (for D.Pharm) or 10th standard marks (for DMLT). The curriculum follows the Punjab State Board’s annual system, and the teaching style is often described as traditional. But the practical component is where the college adds value. D.Pharm students, for instance, complete 500 hours of mandatory training at major hospitals like Fortis Mohali, Apollo Chandigarh, and the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16. That’s a solid, real-world grounding you can’t get from textbooks alone. The faculty, numbering around 25, is frequently praised in student reviews for being accessible and supportive, even if the infrastructure in some of the ten labs feels a bit dated.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy Placements: Packages, Recruiters & Reality Check

Let’s be clear about what to expect. You are graduating with a diploma, not a degree. The placement cell here is connecting you with entry-level roles in retail, hospitals, and diagnostics—not with high-flying corporate research positions. The official highest package for 2024 hovered around ₹3.5 – ₹4.0 LPA, with an average between ₹2.0 – ₹2.5 LPA. The placement percentage is a point of debate; while the college may claim high numbers, the consensus from student reviews suggests a working figure of 60-70% for on-campus offers. Many graduates opt to start their own retail pharmacies or find jobs through family networks. The top recruiters are a who’s who of local healthcare providers: Fortis, Apollo, and Alchemist hospitals, alongside pharma giants like Cipla, Sun Pharma, and Abbott for medical representative or production roles. It’s a decent outcome for the investment, but it’s not a ticket to a 10 LPA package. You’re building a foundation.

Fees and Financial Aid at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy

This is arguably the college’s strongest selling point. The cost of education here is remarkably low, especially for the D.Pharm program. The base tuition is regulated, but the total annual charges for D.Pharm typically range between ₹25,000 to ₹35,000. For the full two-year course, you’re looking at roughly ₹60,000 to ₹70,000. The DMLT program costs about ₹28,000 - ₹30,000 per year. If you need accommodation, the hostel and mess fees add another ₹50,000 – ₹80,000 annually. Compared to the lakhs demanded by private B.Pharm colleges in the region, this is exceptional value. Financial aid is available through standard Post-Matric scholarships for SC/ST/OBC students, and the Sikh Educational Society offers some merit-based concessions.

Admissions: Eligibility, Cutoffs & Selection Process

The process is transparent and merit-based. There is no entrance exam. Admission is determined solely by your marks in the qualifying examination (10+2 for D.Pharm, 10th for DMLT). You must register through the official Punjab State Board of Technical Education (PSBTE) portal during the application window, which usually runs from April to June. The board then conducts centralized online counseling based on the generated merit lists. Cutoffs aren’t published in the traditional sense like for engineering colleges, but competition is steady. A limited number of management quota seats are available as per board guidelines. It’s a straightforward system, but you have to be on top of the PSBTE calendar.

Campus, Hostels and Student Life

The college sits on about 6 acres within the larger Sikh Educational Society complex in Sector 26—Chandigarh’s educational hub. The location is a major plus, with easy access to the city’s amenities. The infrastructure is functional. Labs are equipped but not flashy. The library has over 12,700 books and some digital access. Sports facilities for cricket, football, and volleyball are shared across the SES campus. The hostel provides separate, basic wings for boys and girls; reviews call them clean but spartan, with a vegetarian mess that serves hygienic if repetitive food. The overall atmosphere is disciplined, even strict, with high attendance mandates. Some students find this reassuring; others chafe at the ‘school-like’ feel. The presence of a Gurudwara on the shared campus adds to the sense of a close-knit, values-oriented community.

Student Reviews: What Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy Alumni Really Think

Scouring platforms like CollegeDunia and Shiksha reveals a consistent pattern. The positives are clear: discipline and safety (a huge relief for parents), an extremely helpful faculty that often goes the extra mile, and outstanding value for money. The location in central Chandigarh is repeatedly praised. The negatives are just as consistent. The strict rules can feel oppressive. The age of some facilities is noted. And most importantly, students who arrive with dreams of high-paying pharma corporate jobs leave disappointed. The placements are what they are—entry points into the healthcare workforce. As one 2024 alum put it: “If you want a solid foundation in Pharmacy at a low cost in the heart of Chandigarh, this is the best place. But don't expect a high-flying corporate placement right after the diploma.” That sums up the consensus perfectly.

Verdict: Is Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy Worth It?

Yes, but for a very specific student. If your goal is to enter the healthcare field quickly and affordably, with a respected diploma that opens doors to hospital pharmacies, retail ownership, or lab technician roles, SGGSCP is an excellent, no-nonsense choice. The low fees, strong practical training, and disciplined environment are genuine strengths. However, if your ambition is a career in pharmaceutical research, development, or management, you should view this diploma as a first step—a cost-effective way to complete your D.Pharm before pursuing a B.Pharm elsewhere. This college is a pragmatic launchpad, not a destination. It’s best for students and families who understand that distinction and value a proven, budget-conscious path into a stable profession.
