ANM admission depends on the state and the specific intake
Admission to Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery (ANM) is not governed by one entrance examination or one identical merit formula throughout India. The Indian Nursing Council (INC) publishes baseline eligibility, including recognised 10+2 routes, medical fitness and an age range, but states and institutions set the application and selection process for their seats. The INC eligibility webpage itself says its criteria were revised from 2012-13. Applicants should therefore read it as a baseline reference and use the current, exact-session prospectus and notice to determine what happens next.
The 2026-27 Manipur example shows one distinct route: the Directorate of Medical Education announced a dedicated ANM entrance paper, application dates and later counselling. The Goa Institute of Nursing Education uses an institutional prospectus with locally specified qualifications, documents and selection conditions. Neither example is a national template. NEET should not be assumed for ANM unless the responsible authority’s current notice explicitly says it applies.
Age and education: examples of different local rules
INC lists minimum age 17 by 31 December of the admission year and maximum age 35. Manipur’s 2026-27 notice similarly states age 17-35 as on 31 December 2026, 10+2 in any stream from a recognised institute and female candidates only. It does not state a minimum marks percentage in that ANM eligibility row. These terms apply to that state’s 2026-27 process, not to every institution. A school may add marks, domicile, language or category conditions.
Goa’s Institute of Nursing Education’s 2025-26 prospectus is a contrasting historical institutional example. Its rules include a marks threshold with an SC/ST threshold, English-medium schooling documentation and Goa residency requirements. The exact residence provisions and exceptions are tied to that intake. The prospectus is now historical; do not carry its figures into a later Goa admission without checking the new official prospectus.
When you compare routes, check the qualification and subject names on your marksheet against the notice, whether the board is recognised, the way aggregate marks are calculated, English subject or medium requirements, and any category certificate conditions. INC’s webpage includes Arts, Science and Healthcare Science-Vocational pathways and mentions NIOS Arts or Science, but it is marked revised from 2012-13. Confirm the current school’s treatment of open schooling and vocational qualifications in writing if the wording is unclear. Eligibility to sit an entrance exam may differ from eligibility for a seat or a category.
Entrance examination, merit and counselling are separate stages
Manipur’s 2026 notification set online applications from 12 to 25 May 2026 and scheduled its entrance examination for 14 June. Its ANM paper comprised 50 objective questions: 25 English and 25 General Knowledge, for 100 marks, based on Class XI and XII standard. The application period and examination are over. The notice gives a concrete example of a state-specific entrance route; it does not describe a current application window or a national examination format.
The later Manipur Round-4 counselling notice is a narrow next step for candidates already in the process. Issued on 27 October 2026, it schedules counselling on Friday, 30 October, with registration from 10:30 to 11:00 AM at the NHM Hall, Directorate of Health Services, Lamphel. It permits video attendance from specified NIC district units. All eligible candidates on the ANM merit list may attend, but the notice lists one UR seat at FHW Training School, Imphal. Candidates must bring original documents; a candidate who failed to attend previous counselling rounds cannot attend this round. This is not an open application for new candidates. Anyone considering it must read the notice and verify that the previous-round condition is met.
Goa’s 2025-26 prospectus uses a local selection order involving merit from qualifying examination and stream/category sequencing, with document checks. That method should not be assumed for later sessions or other schools. For any new intake, confirm whether selection is based on school-leaving marks, entrance results, counselling rank or a staged combination; whether a separate counselling registration is needed; and how ties, reservation and vacant seats are handled. A merit list may establish rank or eligibility to participate, but it is not itself an admission offer.
Application steps and documents
The exact sequence varies, but applicants should expect to follow the official process carefully: obtain the current notice and any correction; verify basic eligibility; complete the named online or paper form; provide the specified documents; pay the stated application charge; save a generated confirmation and payment receipt; download an admit card if an examination is required; follow result and counselling notices; and attend verification or reporting as directed. Do not rely on a generic admission checklist when a state has prescribed its own portal, document format or date.
The Goa prospectus names documents such as birth proof, 10+2 pass and marks certificates, a board certificate regarding English medium, Goa residence evidence, medical fitness certification and category records where applicable. Those requirements belong to that institutional session and are not a national checklist. Manipur’s October counselling notice separately requires original documents on the day of counselling. Confirm whether an original is needed at application, exam, counselling or final reporting, and whether a self-attested copy or a certificate from a designated authority is acceptable.
Check that names, date of birth and category details match across records. For online forms, preserve the final confirmation page; the Manipur notification warns that a bank debit alone is not proof of completed payment and that the confirmation page and fee proof should be retained. Certificate validity periods can matter, particularly for reserved categories. If a scan is rejected or a portal field conflicts with the prospectus, contact the authority before the deadline and keep its response.
Application fee, tuition and seat count
An entrance application fee is not the programme’s tuition. Manipur’s 2026 notification lists a non-refundable ANM exam application charge of ₹300, reduced to ₹200 for SC/ST applicants. This is a past-cycle examination charge, not an estimate of the cost of studying. Tuition, hostel, uniform, examination, transport and refundable deposits must be checked in the institution’s current fee schedule.
Likewise, the single UR ANM vacancy listed in Manipur’s October Round-4 notice is not the annual intake or a forecast for another year. A late vacancy round is limited by its seat matrix and eligibility conditions. Candidates should read the merit list, counselling notice and seat allocation instructions together. Never pay a broker on the basis of an old vacancy notice or assume a seat can be reserved outside the official allotment process.
How to check whether a notice is still actionable
Start at the official institute or state authority site, and check the notice date, academic year, programme name and any later correction. Compare the application deadline, examination date, result stage, counselling round, seat category and reporting instructions. A notice that remains indexed online can be useful historical evidence but does not mean a window is open. In the examples here, Goa 2025-26 admission material and Manipur’s May application period are closed. The Manipur 30 October 2026 counselling notice is upcoming as of 29 October, but it applies only to eligible candidates who participated in earlier rounds and concerns one listed UR seat.
Before accepting a seat, verify the institution and intake’s approval/recognition, the qualification awarded, fees, clinical training arrangements and the State Nursing Council registration path. Ask for the full prospectus and written clarification where dates or criteria differ across documents. Admission is contingent on eligibility, selection, seat availability and document verification. A broad national summary cannot guarantee that a particular applicant qualifies or that a seat remains available.
