The short answer: check both the council baseline and the school notice
Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery (ANM) eligibility is not fully captured by a single marks cutoff that applies identically across India. The Indian Nursing Council (INC) eligibility page lists a minimum age of 17 by 31 December of the admission year, a maximum age of 35, medical fitness and a recognised 10+2 qualification. It includes Arts subjects with English Core or Elective, Science, or Healthcare Science-Vocational; it also names 10+2 Arts or Science through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). However, the page itself says it was revised from academic year 2012-13. Treat it as published council guidance, not proof that every state prospectus currently accepts every listed route without additional conditions.
For a real application, the controlling checklist is the current prospectus and admission notification for the exact institution, intake and seat category, read alongside operative regulator and state-council rules. A newer prospectus may add marks, domicile, language, gender, age-calculation or selection conditions. It may also identify a state entrance examination. Eligibility to apply, eligibility to sit an entrance test, eligibility for a particular category of seat and final admission after document verification are separate questions. Check each explicitly before paying.
Age: calculate it on the stated reference date
INC’s published ANM line sets age at 17 on or before 31 December in the year admission is sought and caps age at 35. Do not calculate age on the application date unless the current notice tells you to. For instance, Manipur’s 2026-27 entrance notification states the age band as 17-35 years as on 31 December 2026. That means a candidate should compare their date of birth with the notification’s reference date, not assume a birthday after the exam changes the eligibility result.
Some notices or institutional categories may provide a relaxation, but a relaxation is never automatic. The INC eligibility page does not describe an ANM age exception alongside its first list, while separate INC school guidelines have historically mentioned a higher limit for particular in-service workers in specified government schools. Such provisions are tightly qualified by applicant status and institution. If you believe an exception applies, locate the exact clause in the current prospectus and ask the admitting authority whether your category and documents meet it. Do not use a general relaxation mentioned in an older guideline to override a current state notice.
Class 12 stream, subjects and marks
The INC page’s ANM entry is broader than the common assumption that only PCB students can apply. It lists 10+2 Arts with English Core or English Elective and a specified set of Arts subjects, Science, or Healthcare Science-Vocational from a recognised board. It separately names NIOS 10+2 Arts or Science. The listed subjects include mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, economics, political science, history, geography, business studies, accountancy, home science, sociology, psychology and philosophy. This list is presented on an eligibility page carrying a 2012-13 revision note, so a candidate should verify current recognition, subject combinations and open-school treatment with the institution and state nursing council.
The threshold is not necessarily uniform. The 2025-26 prospectus of Goa’s Institute of Nursing Education is one institution-specific example: it specifies a recognised 10+2 pass and an aggregate mark threshold, with a different threshold for SC/ST applicants, alongside its own residence and selection conditions. Those figures govern that prospectus only. They should not be copied into an all-India ANM rule or used for Goa’s later intake without its current prospectus. The Manipur 2026 notification, by contrast, states 10+2 in any stream from a recognised institute for ANM and does not state a minimum percentage in the ANM eligibility row. Do not infer that no other admissions or category condition exists; read the full notice and counselling instructions.
This comparison is useful precisely because the documents differ: an applicant with Arts, Commerce, vocational or open-school study should not self-reject based on a coaching website’s blanket “science required” statement, but should not assume acceptance either. Confirm board recognition, the exact subject line, English requirements, minimum aggregate and category relaxation in the current institution’s official material. Keep the original marksheet and board certificate available for verification.
Medical fitness and gender conditions
INC’s eligibility page says the student must be medically fit. The wording does not itself specify a universal medical test format, list of investigations or document expiry period. A prospectus can require a certificate from a named government hospital or medical board, and it can prescribe a form. Obtain the certificate in the stated format and within the specified date window rather than relying on an ordinary fitness note. Disclose relevant information accurately and seek clarification about reasonable accommodation or a condition that may affect training; do not treat a broad fitness clause as a substitute for the institution’s documented assessment.
Gender wording also needs careful handling. Manipur’s 2026-27 ANM notification explicitly says only female candidates may apply. The Goa Institute of Nursing Education prospectus for 2025-26 similarly sets a female-candidate condition for that named programme and session. The INC eligibility web page currently opened for this assignment does not state that condition in its ANM bullet list, although separate older school guidelines do. These examples support a local rule for those documents, not an unqualified claim about every ANM seat nationwide. Check the current notice for the intended school and seat category.
Entrance exams and exceptions do not create a national NEET rule
There is no basis in the reviewed INC ANM eligibility page for saying that NEET is universally required for ANM. A state may nevertheless set an entrance test or a merit-and-counselling process. Manipur’s 2026-27 notification announced a dedicated ANM entrance examination, distinct from the Common Entrance Examination sections described for other programmes in that document. Its examination scheme is 50 objective questions: 25 English and 25 General Knowledge, 100 marks in total, based on Class XI and XII standard; the notice states a two-hour duration. The application portal window was 12-25 May 2026 and has passed. These details are an example of one state’s 2026 cycle, not a current application window or national test pattern.
Goa’s institutional process uses its own stated selection sequence and eligibility conditions. A state or school may admit through marks-based merit, a notified examination, counselling or a combination of steps. Check whether an entrance score is required, whether it is used for ranking or merely screening, how tie-breaking works, and whether a separate counselling registration is needed. NEET should be considered only if the exact responsible authority’s ANM prospectus expressly makes it relevant.
A practical self-check before you apply
Read the current notice once for basic eligibility, then again for the evidence you must submit. Record the reference date for age; match the board and qualification name; compare subject and marks rules; check any category relaxation and its certificate date; verify language, domicile and gender clauses; and obtain the prescribed medical fitness certificate. Confirm whether your route involves a separate entrance exam, merit list, counselling registration, physical attendance or original-document verification. Save the notice PDF, not only a portal screenshot, so that a later correction can be compared with the first version.
If your marksheet, subject nomenclature, open-school qualification or age exception does not fit the printed wording exactly, seek written clarification from the institute or state authority before submitting an application. Keep the answer with your documents. Eligibility is a threshold for consideration, not a promise of a seat: selection can still depend on exam performance, merit position, category, available seats and successful verification. Finally, confirm that the school and the specific intake are recognised or approved for the intended year. A valid 10+2 qualification cannot correct a problem with programme recognition.
