First identify the institution's admission route
There is no single national BA application sequence. A university may allocate seats through a common entrance test, its own examination, Class 12 marks, an interview or a combination. Start with the current admission bulletin for the exact BA Programme or honours subject, then make a calendar from the controlling institution notice. A general course page or another college's instructions cannot establish your route.
CUET (UG) is used by participating universities, not every institution or every programme. NTA's 2026 press release describes CUET as an admission platform for undergraduate programmes offered by participating universities. For Delhi University in 2026-27, the route included CUET (UG) and a separate CSAS application where candidates selected programme and college preferences. DU also listed School of Open Learning and NCWEB as exceptions to its CUET requirement. This is a historical example: the 2026 cycle is over, and no later BA calendar should be inferred from it. Other universities can use their own exam or qualifying marks, while an ODL programme may take applications through a dedicated portal. IGNOU's BA General ODL page links to its admission portal and gives a named programme eligibility and duration. It does not make that process the rule for a campus BA at another university. Confirm the current cycle and instructions from the authority that will issue your offer. (IGNOU BA General ODL)
A step-by-step application plan
1. Build a programme list. Record the exact award title, subject combination, campus or mode, application authority and official course page. Separate BA Programme, BA Honours, applied BA and professional degrees. Make sure the programme is available at the institution and intake you want.
2. Map your subjects before choosing test papers. Read programme-specific eligibility, then compare it with your Class 12 marksheet. DU's 2026-27 FAQ tied CUET subject selection to subjects studied and passed in Class 12 and set a specific Hindi requirement for BA (Hons) Hindi. It also allowed a science-stream applicant to later select BA (Hons) History through CSAS without a stream-change penalty. Do not reuse those details for another university or cycle. (DU UG Admissions FAQ 2026-27)
3. Submit every required form. A common entrance registration may not also count as the university application. Check if you must complete a university portal, counselling or seat-allocation system, programme preferences, college preferences, category declaration or separate departmental form. Recheck whether a programme requires a language, aptitude or domain paper.
4. Prepare documents and payment details. Keep a recent photograph and signature file, identity details, Class 10 and 12 records, category or disability certificates if applicable, and any equivalence document. Follow file size, format, name and deadline instructions exactly. Save the completed form, application number, fee receipt and correction-window status. Never assume a payment was recorded solely from a bank debit message.
5. Track the result and allocation separately. An entrance score, eligibility check, merit list and seat offer are different stages. If the university has counselling or a preference system, enter only programmes and colleges you would accept, in a considered order. Read round rules, upgrade options, fee payment deadlines and document verification terms before accepting a seat. A past cutoff is not a guarantee of a future allocation.
Route differences that change your plan
An entrance-based regular college route demands early subject mapping and attention to test registration. A merit-based route may place more weight on board marks and can use a university portal instead. A distance-learning route can have different application windows, study materials and assessment locations. The programme's actual notice decides which applies. Do not add a CUET attempt simply because another university uses CUET, and do not omit it where the selected institution expressly requires it.
At DU, the FAQ states that subject selection, eligibility and programme choice are tied to the published 2026-27 bulletin and CSAS process. It also says a later college preference step follows the CUET result. This demonstrates a useful distinction: the examination registration and seat-allocation application are connected but separate actions. Mark each one on your calendar, and check the portal after the result for later instructions. Do not rely on a coaching page for an official deadline or for whether an application is complete. Avoid the most common application errors
Applicants often select a test paper that sounds close to their subject but does not match the programme rule; assume a CUET score automatically creates a university application; miss a later preference or counselling form; or treat an old year's test result as valid for a new cycle. DU's 2026-27 FAQ explicitly said that its 2026 admissions used the 2026 CUET scores, not the previous year's score. That rule is a dated illustration, not a statement about every admissions authority. Recheck score validity in the current notice.
Do not wait until the final day to resolve subject equivalence, certificate validity or payment status. If your case depends on a subject name not offered in the test catalogue, an improvement result or a qualification from another board, write to the admissions office with the exact clause and ask for an official response. Save that response. If the course page and bulletin differ, use the latest formal correction from the responsible authority and contact the institution before the deadline.
A practical checklist for the next cycle
When the next admission notice appears, verify the cycle label, programme availability, eligibility, test subjects, exam mode, application dates, fees, counselling portal, preference limits and document rules. Compare each programme separately, especially if you are applying to BA Economics, Psychology, Hindi or another course with a subject prerequisite. Prepare a backup list that includes only programmes whose eligibility you have checked and whose curriculum you would actually study.
Until the next cycle is officially announced, you can shortlist subjects, practise relevant reading and quantitative skills, collect school records and compare syllabi. Do not treat the 2026 calendar as a forecast. Keep a saved copy of the official notice you used, note when you last checked the website and revisit it before making a payment. The best admission plan is a sequence of verified actions tied to the exact university and programme, not one generic “BA admission” date.
