BA fees have to be tied to a programme and year
There is no reliable nationwide BA price. A college may publish an admission-time amount, a first-year total, tuition only or separate charges for later semesters. The number changes with the institution, subject combination, mode, category, hostel and examination requirements. A figure from one BA course cannot be entered as the fee for every Bachelor of Arts programme.
Two University of Delhi college schedules show why the basis matters. Kamala Nehru College's 2026-27 first-year table lists ₹18,970 for BA Programme and ₹20,370 for BA Programme with Psychology. It also has a separate PwBD fee column. Dyal Singh College's 2026-27 page lists ₹17,105 for BA Programme at admission and explicitly says the amount excludes Semester I and II examination fees. These are specific college and course rows, not a national range or proof that the schedules include the same components. (KNC fee structure 2026-27; Dyal Singh fee structure 2026-27)
The KNC table shows a ₹1,400 difference between its listed BA Programme amount and BA Programme with Psychology. That is a useful same-college comparison of published rows, but it does not establish that Psychology alone causes the difference or that later years cost the same. The Dyal Singh amount is not directly comparable without accounting for its examination-fee exclusion. Compare fee schedules by institution, exact title, year, category and included items before drawing a conclusion.
Build a realistic course-cost estimate
Ask the college for a written schedule for the exact BA programme and entry session. Separate tuition, admission, university, student-welfare, library, laboratory, fieldwork, examination and refundable security charges. Check whether the amount is due once, every semester or every academic year. Confirm if later-year fees are fixed, expected to rise or published separately. Add hostel, mess, travel, books, device access and field visits only when they apply to your plan.
Calculate a full-course scenario only when the college confirms a compatible period for each component. If a schedule gives an initial admission charge and a later annual charge, do not multiply the first payment by the full duration. If an exam fee is excluded, include a separate allowance only after finding the current official schedule. Keep refundable deposits separate from money that will not be returned. Ask what happens if you withdraw, change programme or receive a scholarship, and note the refund and deadline terms.
Compare regular and distance routes on the same basis
On-campus and open-learning fees may package services differently. Compare the total expected amount over your planned period, not a headline tuition number. For distance learning, check study-material access, learner-support sessions, assignment submissions, exam fees and travel to an examination centre. For campus study, include commuting, accommodation and any compulsory field or practical costs. Do not assume that the lower published tuition necessarily gives the lower total cost.
IGNOU's current BA General ODL page is not a safe fee quote: it displays a full-programme figure and a separate per-year total that conflict with each other. The page also says examination fees are not included. Because the fee lines are inconsistent, verify the current prospectus or admission portal before paying and do not use either figure as a generic BA amount. (IGNOU BA General ODL)
Scholarships and concessions need separate confirmation
Check the institution's current scholarship, fee-concession and government-scheme notices. Confirm eligibility, income limits, category documents, renewal conditions, minimum attendance or marks, disbursement timing and whether a scholarship pays the college directly or reimburses the student. A scheme's existence does not mean every BA student qualifies. Do not reduce your budget by an award amount until you receive a written eligibility or sanction decision.
For PwBD, reserved-category, economically weaker section or other fee categories, use the official schedule and the certificate rules for your admission year. KNC's 2026-27 schedule lists a separate PwBD amount; that row is tied to that college's schedule and should not be copied to another university. Ask the fee office whether the figure covers all compulsory charges or only a stated component.
A practical comparison worksheet
For every option, write down: exact programme; college and university; academic year; whether the amount is first-year, annual, semester or full programme; included compulsory items; excluded examination charges; refundable deposits; hostel and travel estimate; scholarship status; payment dates; and refund policy. Save the source URL and a PDF or screenshot of the official schedule. If a course title is missing, contact the fee office instead of substituting another BA row.
Finally, compare like with like. The KNC BA Programme and BA Programme with Psychology rows are both first-year amounts for 2026-27 at one college. The Dyal Singh BA Programme figure is an admission-time amount with a stated examination-fee exclusion. These schedules help illustrate local differences; they do not support a national minimum, maximum or average. A sound budget starts with the specific offer, includes the missing costs and leaves room for annual revisions the university has not yet published.
