Start with the exact BA programme
“BA eligible” is not a complete admissions decision. A university may set a general qualifying credential, minimum marks, required Class 12 subjects, a subject-specific entrance combination and a later allocation or interview stage. The rules can differ between BA Programme, BA Honours and a specialised BA, even at the same institution. The University of Delhi says in its 2026-27 undergraduate FAQ that eligibility for similar programmes differs by university. Treat that as a practical rule for your search: open the current bulletin for every programme you intend to select, and do not copy a requirement from a different BA or college. (DU UG Admissions FAQ 2026-27)
For each option, record the awarding institution and exact award title. Check whether the course is a BA Programme, an honours route, an applied subject or a professional degree with “BA” in its name. Confirm whether you need 10+2 or an equivalent qualification, a minimum aggregate or subject marks, a specific subject at school, a language paper, an entrance test or an interview. If the page says “equivalent”, locate the institution's process for recognising an alternative board or qualification rather than assuming your certificate will be accepted.
Subject requirements can change by specialisation
Some BA routes are open across school streams; others require a particular subject. DU's 2026-27 FAQ says a science-stream applicant may choose BA (Hons) History through CSAS without a stream-change penalty. The same FAQ says an applicant to BA (Hons) Hindi must have studied and passed Hindi in Class 12 and appear in Hindi in CUET (UG) 2026. These examples show why a rule for one BA cannot be transferred to another. They are DU rules for that admission year, not a national eligibility table. (DU UG Admissions FAQ 2026-27)
Mathematics, language proficiency, practical background or a portfolio may matter for other named courses. Do not infer a requirement from the discipline's name alone. Find the programme-specific table and check its footnotes, accepted subject equivalences, board-result timing and category conditions. If a subject is mandatory, verify both that it appears in your Class 12 record and that you select the corresponding entrance paper where required. A high entrance score does not normally erase a missing minimum qualification or compulsory subject.
Entrance requirements are institution-specific
CUET is not a universal BA admission exam. NTA describes CUET (UG) as a platform for admissions to programmes offered by participating universities. Each university decides which programmes participate and which papers it uses. DU's 2026-27 process required CUET and then a separate CSAS application with programme and college preferences; its FAQ identifies School of Open Learning and NCWEB as exceptions to the DU CUET requirement. Those are dated DU rules, and the 2026 examination and allocation cycle has passed. A future applicant must use the notice for the year they are applying. (NTA CUET (UG) 2026 press release; DU UG Admissions FAQ 2026-27)
Other institutions may use their own entrance test, qualifying-exam marks, an interview or a different combination. Open and distance programmes can have separate admission pages and calendars. IGNOU's BA General ODL page lists 10+2 or equivalent as its entry qualification, but that is a named programme, not a rule for every open university. Check whether registration is open, what documents are required and whether an entrance test or programme-specific subject rule applies before paying. (IGNOU BA General ODL)
Make an eligibility audit before applying
Create a table for each BA you are considering. Include: exact programme title; awarding institution; qualifying examination; aggregate or subject threshold; required Class 12 subjects; entrance examination and paper combination; application platform; category or domicile provisions; selection and seat-allocation steps; documents; and the controlling notice date. Mark each item “confirmed from current official notice”, “not stated” or “needs clarification”. This is safer than a single green tick for “BA eligibility”.
Next, match the form to your records. Use the spelling and subject names on your marksheet. Check whether the institution accepts improvement results, multiple boards, vocational subjects or an equivalent qualification and what evidence it asks for. For category, disability, sports or other special provisions, confirm the issuing authority, certificate format and validity window from the current bulletin. Do not send personal documents through unofficial agents or social media messages.
If the entrance form and university form are separate, finish both. In DU's 2026-27 example, sitting CUET was not the last application step: candidates also had to complete CSAS and enter programme and college preferences. Verify that each course appears in the later preference portal and that you enter the correct order. Keep payment confirmations, submitted forms, admit cards, score records and preference receipts together. A missed preference or invalid certificate can matter even when the applicant meets the academic threshold.
Check eligibility again at the right time
Admissions rules are cycle-bound. Before registering, confirm the academic session, document version and any correction notice. A previous year's CUET paper combination, minimum marks or application deadline is historical evidence, not a current instruction. Do not assume that a university will accept an old score or that a reopened portal changes the eligibility clause. If the current bulletin is not published, plan your documents and subject preparation without inventing a date or an unannounced test requirement.
Ask the admission office a precise written question when your case is unclear. State the exact BA title, board, subject names, result timing and clause you are interpreting. Save the reply with the bulletin. If you are comparing regular and distance modes, verify both separately; the study format does not automatically imply different eligibility, but the institution may set a different process. Apply only after you can explain which official rule supports each important choice on your form.
