Check the exact course and intake
Eligibility must be read from the current admission rules for the specific university, campus and admission cohort. The degree title alone does not establish a common school-subject combination or percentage for every institution. In this research, the clearest official current example is Manipal College of Health Professions (MCHP), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). Its Bachelor of Occupational Therapy page says Indian-board applicants need 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as compulsory subjects, and at least 50% aggregate marks in PCB. These requirements belong to that programme page. Do not transfer its marks threshold or subject list to a different BOT college.
The same page warns that eligibility and admission may change under National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions directions. That caveat matters: an admissions page can be updated, and current professional standards may affect an upcoming cohort. Before applying, check the live programme page, the current prospectus and any formal correction or regulator notice. Save the version that states the intake year. If a college has not posted a new prospectus, ask its admissions office which published rule applies rather than assuming last year’s criteria continue.
Read the subject rule and percentage formula separately
Subject eligibility and marks calculation are related but different tests. MAHE’s page names Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, while its minimum percentage is stated for PCB. This means applicants should not substitute an overall board percentage for the stated PCB aggregate without an official explanation. Nor should they assume that English is included in the PCB calculation simply because it is a compulsory subject. Confirm how practical marks, improvement attempts and grade conversion are handled under the current notice.
Write down your board, year of completion, subjects and marks or grades before comparing them with the rule. If the notice uses “or equivalent,” check which equivalence documents it accepts and whether the board’s subject title needs evaluation. Candidates with Biology and Mathematics, a vocational qualification, an additional subject, a compartment result, a gap year or a pending result should ask the institution how that specific case is treated. Do not infer that an adjacent physiotherapy, medical or allied-health programme uses the same BOT rule.
Minimum marks may also be defined differently across institutions. One notice may refer to all subjects, another to selected science subjects, and another to a rank or entrance score for selection after basic eligibility. Category-specific conditions, where published, need their own official evidence and supporting documents. Do not assume a concession exists, apply a reservation rule from another programme or treat an eligibility threshold as a promised admission. Meeting minimum criteria normally establishes only that an application can be considered; the selection process and seat availability are separate questions.
International and non-standard qualifications
MAHE publishes different qualification details for international pathways. Its page lists A-level Physics, Chemistry and Biology with English at AS level, and gives separate IB conditions including PCB, English, minimum subject points and an overall score. These are institution-specific statements and may apply only to the page’s current programme intake. The university page also cautions that eligibility may change under NCAHP directions. Applicants following A-level, IB, GCE or another national curriculum should confirm the current course-specific conversion and equivalence conditions directly.
When writing to admissions, include the exact qualification name, examination board, subject names, level, grades, examination year and whether any final result is pending. Ask whether the programme accepts the credential, which equivalence authority or certificate is needed and by what date final documents must be submitted. Ask whether all required subjects must appear in one examination sitting. Keep the answer with the prospectus. An international applicant should also check language requirements, document attestation, visa timing and fee category separately; those requirements are not settled by a school-subject eligibility paragraph.
Separate eligibility from entrance and merit
An eligible applicant may still need to take an entrance test or meet a merit cutoff. MAHE identifies the Manipal Entrance Test (MET) for its BOT route and states that MET contributes 50% of the merit weight while 10+2 marks contribute the other 50%. The page’s weighting line names Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Maths and English, while its eligibility block specifies PCB and English. Because these passages use different wording, candidates should verify which 10+2 subjects are included in merit calculation for their intake. The MET route and weighting are Manipal-specific examples, not a universal BOT entrance exam rule.
Check selection information after you confirm basic eligibility: test registration, subject coverage, score validity, weight formula, category rules, merit list, tie-breaking and counselling. Do not use a coaching-site estimate or a past cutoff as proof that you qualify or will receive a seat. If board results are pending, ask both whether provisional application is allowed and when the final marksheet is due. A submitted form or entrance score does not replace document verification or an official allotment.
A short pre-application verification
Before paying an application fee, use this checklist:
- Confirm the full award name, campus, awarding university and admission year.
- Match every required 10+2 subject against your marksheet, including subject variants and English requirements.
- Recalculate the stated percentage using the institution’s own formula, not an overall percentage unless specified.
- Check board equivalence, pending-result, improvement, category and document rules.
- Verify the entrance test and merit weighting from the current official notice.
- Confirm professional recognition or accreditation separately from academic entry eligibility.
- Save the prospectus, application receipt and written answers to any unresolved question.
For MAHE Manipal, the official BOT page lists its Indian-board requirement as Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English with a 50% PCB aggregate. Use that as a programme-specific reference point only. For another college, request that college’s current formal criteria. If a web page, prospectus and application portal conflict, ask admissions which dated document controls and wait for written clarification before relying on an assumption. Keep registration or professional-practice questions separate and verify current rules with the responsible body; qualifying for a place on a course does not itself prove the registration status of the eventual qualification.
