Read the fee basis before comparing prices
BOT costs are set by each institution and intake. A fee headline can refer to one semester, one year, tuition only, or the full programme. These amounts are not interchangeable. Check the exact award, campus, admission year and number of years covered, then read what the institution includes and excludes. Do not convert a total-course fee into a first-year amount unless the university publishes instalments. A scholarship or concession may also apply only to specific applicants and can have renewal conditions.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) lists total programme fees of ₹12,58,000 for Bachelor of Occupational Therapy admissions in 2026 and says its 2027 fee schedule will be updated later. This is one named campus/programme’s total fee for the stated admission year. It is not a national BOT average, an annual tuition charge or a current quote for the next cycle. Confirm the fee on the live official page and in the offer documents before paying. The page also lists an international fee in USD, which should not be combined with the Indian fee because the applicant category and currency differ.
Build a full cost of attendance
Ask the institution for a year-wise schedule and make a personal total-cost sheet. Keep tuition separate from admission and registration charges, university examination fees, laboratory or clinical supplies, books, uniforms and refundable deposits. Add accommodation and meals, local transport, travel to placement sites, insurance or health checks if required, and personal living expenses. Confirm whether internship periods carry tuition or additional charges and whether a delayed placement creates another semester’s cost.
MAHE's published programme page describes a five-year course and a six-month clinical internship. Its July 2020 curriculum document describes four and a half years of coursework followed by a six-month supervised internship. These presentations are broadly compatible but come from different page/document editions. The fee page calls ₹12,58,000 the total programme fee for 2026; it does not break the amount into annual instalments in the material reviewed. Ask admissions whether the total covers every academic year and internship period, and request the current cohort's detailed schedule rather than inferring a per-year amount from the historical curriculum structure.
For each line, record the amount, currency, period, whether it is mandatory, whether it is refundable and the official document that states it. If the fee document lists a caution deposit, record it separately from the non-refundable course fee. If accommodation is optional, prepare both a residential and commuting scenario. Include transport to external clinical settings; a campus location may differ from a placement location. Do not add an unverified estimate to the institution’s published total and then present the sum as an official BOT fee.
Ask about escalation, refunds and payment timing
An overall fee shown at admission may not explain how later instalments are charged. Ask whether the amount is fixed for the entire cohort or can change by academic year, which charges are payable before class begins, and what happens if a student has a backlog or must repeat a clinical placement. Confirm the deadlines and accepted payment methods using the university’s official portal. Keep receipts and avoid transferring money to a personal bank account or an agent promising a seat.
Read the refund policy before accepting an offer. Check the withdrawal date, applicable deductions, processing time, treatment of refundable deposits and any rules tied to an education loan or scholarship. A deposit may be refundable only under stated conditions. If counselling and fee payment occur close together, ask for the exact deadline and what happens if documents are still under verification. Save the version of the refund rules that applied when you accepted the seat.
Scholarships and affordability
MAHE’s course page lists several scholarship categories and describes conditions for the Manipal Foundation merit scholarship. Its page says the example requires a specified Karnataka board result and Scholar Programme attendance, and that renewal depends on clearing all subjects before the annual fee due date. It also describes a fee waiver and a reimbursement condition if a qualifying scholar leaves early. Those conditions are programme-page examples, not a universal award available to every BOT student. Applicants should check the current scholarship regulation, eligible applicant group, number of awards, renewal rules and interaction with other aid.
Do not subtract the largest advertised scholarship from your budget until you know that you qualify and can meet every continuation condition. Ask whether the award covers tuition only or also hostel costs, how academic failure affects renewal and what repayment is required on withdrawal. Compare net cost across the full programme, not only first-year discounts. If aid is competitive, prepare a plan for the full fee in case the award is unavailable.
Compare fee figures responsibly
When comparing colleges, use one row per institution and include campus, year, fee basis, number of years, compulsory non-tuition charges and exclusions. If one institution publishes ₹12.58 lakh for a total course and another publishes ₹2.7 lakh annually, do not call one cheaper without aligning duration and included charges. If an institution does not disclose a fee, mark it as unavailable and request the official schedule. Unknown is not zero. Avoid using an aggregator’s “average BOT fee” unless it explains which campuses, cohorts, duration basis and charges were included.
Also compare what the fee buys: supervised clinical learning, equipment access, placement support, student services and any extra travel. A larger tuition amount may include facilities that another course bills separately, while a lower headline may omit substantial living or clinical expenses. Ask for written clarity on which clinical sites are included and whether placement transport or accommodation is the student’s responsibility. Do not assume that a lab list means equipment, supplies and external training are included in tuition.
A simple decision method
Before paying an application or acceptance amount, request the current BOT prospectus, detailed fee schedule, refund rules, scholarship conditions and internship policy. Check that each document names the correct campus and intake. Add one-time charges and living expenses in a separate personal estimate, retaining the source for every official figure. Compare monthly affordability and the total loan requirement, not just the first payment. If the fee page and offer letter disagree, ask finance or admissions for a dated written clarification before making a non-refundable payment.
The MAHE 2026 total programme fee of ₹12,58,000 is a useful example of how a university presents a dated course total; its page says the 2027 schedule will follow later. It should not be treated as a quote for another institution or the next intake. Fee schedules change, and student-specific scholarships or deposits affect the final bill. Recheck official material when you apply, retain your payment evidence, and budget for costs the academic fee may not cover.
