CA admission: register with ICAI and follow the right route
Admission to the Indian Chartered Accountancy course means registering with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), then completing staged examinations and training. It is not a college seat-allocation process, and a private coaching provider does not award the CA qualification. Students begin through Foundation or, when eligible, Direct Entry to Intermediate. ICAI course overview, ICAI CA course FAQ.
Foundation route
After passing Class X, a student may provisionally register for Foundation in ICAI’s Self Service Portal. Registration is not the same as exam eligibility: the candidate must satisfy Class XII and the rules for the selected attempt. Foundation cut-off dates are tied to specific exam sessions, so use the current official notice and do not copy an old deadline. Keep the registration acknowledgment and confirm that identity and education details in the portal are correct.
After meeting the examination and Class XII conditions and passing Foundation, register for Intermediate. The course registration step and the exam-form submission are separate actions. A candidate awaiting Class XII results should check the current provisional process, required proof and submission timing.
Direct Entry to Intermediate
Eligible graduates and certain professional-course candidates can register directly at Intermediate without taking Foundation. ICAI’s FAQ describes qualifying commerce graduates or postgraduates with at least 55% aggregate, other graduates or postgraduates with at least 60%, and candidates who have passed the Intermediate level of ICSI or ICMAI. Degree subject requirements matter; check the official wording against your transcript. Final-year students may be provisionally eligible subject to later proof of the degree and required marks. A minimum study period still applies before the Intermediate exam. ICAI Direct Entry FAQ.
Direct Entry is an ICAI course route, not a competitive entrance examination for a college place. It changes the entry stage but does not guarantee a shorter total pathway. Confirm the precise qualification and study-period rule before choosing this route.
Examination and scheme sequence
Once registered at a level, candidates must separately meet the study period, eligibility declaration, group choice and exam-form requirements for each attempt. Foundation, Intermediate and Final examinations follow their own terms and notices. The New Scheme took effect on 1 July 2023; ICAI’s transition notice set the last old-scheme Foundation exam for December 2023 and the final old-scheme Intermediate/Final exams for November 2023, while specifying new-scheme transition dates. Candidates with an older registration should check conversion, exemptions and remaining-paper rules in their account. ICAI New Scheme transition notice.
Cycle notices control examination forms and dates. ICAI’s September/November 2026 page, for example, grouped Foundation and Intermediate material for September and Final material for November. This is a dated reference, not a claim that any form is now open or that future terms will use the same timetable. Check the latest notice for group, exam centre, permitted exemptions, applicable paper versions and deadlines. ICAI 2026 examination page.
Training and progression
Under the New Scheme, students must clear both Intermediate groups and complete the prescribed four-week ICITSS before starting practical training. ICAI’s FAQ describes two years of training for New Scheme students; legacy training starts may remain under a different transition rule. The pathway also includes Advanced ICITSS and self-paced modules at specified stages. Read the exact conditions for your scheme and registration history. ICAI Articleship FAQ, ICAI syllabus index.
ICAI says its e-diary is mandatory for students commencing practical training from 1 January 2026. Verify the current training registration form, principal requirements, attendance and recordkeeping rules before starting. ICAI E-Diary announcement.
Before you register
Identify the entry route and course level. Check qualifications, marks and required documents in the official ICAI text. Confirm the target attempt, registration and exam-form deadlines, fees and study-period conditions in the portal. Keep copies of receipts. If you are considering Direct Entry, verify degree subject and aggregate requirements before assuming a Foundation registration is necessary. If you are a legacy candidate, confirm scheme conversion before using a new-scheme syllabus or training checklist.
Coaching may help with study but does not substitute for ICAI registration. Be cautious of anyone promising a guaranteed pass, fixed completion date or membership based only on a payment. Membership follows the full applicable education, exam and training requirements.
If you are changing routes or have previous professional-course credit, do not assume automatic paper exemptions. ICAI’s conversion and exemption rules depend on the specific examination history and transition notice. Save the result statement and registration details, then confirm the mapped papers with the Institute before paying for a new group or exam form. ICAI New Scheme transition notice.
After completing Final and the required training, a candidate must still make the membership application and meet ICAI’s membership conditions. If you intend to practise, check the separate Certificate of Practice rules. Exam success is an important milestone, not automatic professional registration.
