CA course eligibility: Foundation and Direct Entry
Eligibility for the ICAI Chartered Accountancy course depends on the entry route and examination attempt. Students may enter through Foundation or, if they meet ICAI’s requirements, register directly for Intermediate. The routes meet at Intermediate, but differ in entry point. Neither is a university seat-allocation test. ICAI controls registration, qualifying-examination, study-period and exam-form conditions. ICAI Foundation syllabus, ICAI CA course FAQ.
Foundation: provisional registration is not exam eligibility
A student who has passed Class X may provisionally register for Foundation. That is an early registration step, not permission to appear for the examination immediately. To sit, the candidate must also meet the Class XII condition and the registration and study-period rules for the selected exam term. Check the latest ICAI announcement for the appropriate registration cut-off. A date taken from a previous attempt is historical and should not be reused as a current deadline. ICAI Foundation course.
After passing Foundation and meeting the Class XII requirement, the student can register for Intermediate. Course registration and an examination form are distinct steps. Candidates should keep their school records, name and date of birth consistent with the ICAI portal and address any mismatch early. If a Class XII result is pending, check the current provisional process and document deadline rather than assuming the exam result can be submitted later without conditions.
Direct Entry: degree and professional-exam routes
ICAI’s official FAQ describes Direct Entry eligibility for commerce graduates or postgraduates with the prescribed 55% aggregate, graduates or postgraduates outside commerce with 60%, and candidates who have passed the Intermediate level examination of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) or the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). The detailed rule for commerce degrees includes requirements about the papers studied and their credits; “55% in any bachelor’s degree” is an incomplete summary. Verify the exact degree, university recognition, subjects and marks against the current ICAI text. ICAI CA course FAQ.
Candidates in the final year of graduation may be allowed provisional Intermediate registration, subject to later submission of degree proof and the prescribed marks. Direct Entry does not erase the study period required before appearing for Intermediate. The candidate must meet that timing condition as well as the registration rules. If a result is delayed or the transcript uses a grading scale, obtain clarification from ICAI.
Passing the ICSI or ICMAI Intermediate examination can be an eligibility basis to enter ICAI Intermediate under the stated conditions. It does not make the three institutes’ syllabi or qualifications equivalent. Confirm the exact examination level and certificate accepted before relying on the route.
Subjects, marks and exam conditions
The Foundation route is not limited to students who chose commerce at school. Students should verify their recognized Class X/XII credentials, examination eligibility and current registration dates in ICAI’s official material. Direct Entry is different: its degree-stream thresholds and subject definitions matter. Do not infer eligibility solely from a course title, a marketing page or a coaching provider’s calculator.
There is no separate nationwide college entrance examination for admission to CA. Foundation is the first ICAI assessment for that route. Direct Entry begins at the Intermediate course. These professional examinations do not allocate university seats in B.Com or other degree programmes, which have separate admissions.
Training and progression conditions
Entry eligibility is only the first check. Students must also satisfy later course progression, group, training and examination conditions. Under the New Scheme, practical training follows the required Intermediate and ICITSS conditions; the two-year training duration applies to relevant New Scheme entrants. Some people who already began training under older rules have transition provisions. Do not apply the current two-year rule to every legacy student without checking their record. A practical eligibility check
Before paying, confirm your route; whether each school or university credential is recognized; degree marks and subject credits if using Direct Entry; whether provisional registration applies; the intended attempt’s registration deadline; the minimum study period; the documents and verification steps; and the training sequence after Intermediate. Save the official notice tied to the attempt you plan to take.
If Direct Entry does not fit, check whether Foundation is available rather than assuming the qualification is closed to you. If you qualify for Direct Entry, compare the route’s study load and timing instead of assuming it guarantees faster membership. Eligibility opens a pathway; it does not predict exam attempts, training completion or employment.
Carry a second check into the portal: completing a course registration does not automatically submit the application for an examination. Confirm the form status and the eligibility declaration for each intended term.
