Map each school’s selection route
M.Des. admission may involve a common design test, institute-specific examination, studio assessment, portfolio review, interview or a combination. The order and weightage are school-specific. Identify which test is accepted, whether a separate institute application is required and when a portfolio or statement is submitted. Keep the test authority’s rules separate from the school’s selection rules. CEED 2027 uses Part A objective questions and Part B design, drawing and writing tasks. Its official page says qualification does not guarantee admission; candidates still need to apply to participating institutes and meet their criteria. (CEED 2027)
Do not assume every programme uses CEED
Some institutions use CEED scores; others administer their own aptitude or studio assessment. NID’s 2026–27 M.Des. process is detailed in its own handbook, while NIFT has a separate admissions process for its master programmes. These examples show why one test score cannot stand in for a programme’s current handbook. Before choosing a preparation plan, confirm whether the institute accepts CEED, requires a separate exam or conducts another assessment. Check any campus or discipline-specific variation. (NID Handbook; NIFT Bulletin)
Prepare for the kind of work assessed
A design assessment can test observation, visual reasoning, problem framing, drawing, communication and the ability to explain a solution. Review the official syllabus, sample papers and instructions from the exam authority. Practise within the time limit and learn how responses are evaluated, but do not treat unofficial answer keys as authoritative. For a studio or interview, be ready to explain how you explored alternatives, tested assumptions and responded to feedback. Follow the school’s portfolio format exactly. If collaborative work is included, state your role. Do not upload confidential client work without permission.
Manage forms, portals and deadlines
An entrance registration and institute application can be separate steps. Keep a calendar for exam registration, school forms, portfolio upload, admit card, assessment rounds, result, preference submission, offer acceptance and fee payment. Save each submitted form and confirmation. Check the official admissions portal for amendments; NID’s portal posts cycle-specific handbook updates and notices, so a copied calendar can quickly become outdated. (NID official portal)
Understand merit and final offer conditions
Read how each school combines test parts, portfolio, interview or academic record. A qualifying threshold may only permit the next stage, while final merit may use a different formula. Confirm category documents, seat allocation, campus preferences and tie-break rules. Before accepting an offer, verify the campus, discipline, award, tuition, reporting date and refund terms. Some processes require an institute preference form or document upload after exam results. A missed step can affect an offer even if the test score remains valid. No universal 2027–28 M.Des. selection sequence is established here; use the newest official notice for your programme.
A step-by-step application file
Create a separate checklist for every institution. Record its exact programme name, campus, exam requirement, application URL, fee, portfolio specification, test dates, interview stage and result portal. Mark which items are controlled by the common exam authority and which are controlled by the school. The CEED 2027 page provides exam information, but any institute that accepts CEED may still have its own form and shortlisting process. (CEED 2027)
Before submitting, proofread the portfolio file names, image resolution, captions, project dates and ownership notes. Check page limits and whether the institute accepts links or only uploaded files. Save a copy of the complete application and payment receipt. After submission, revisit the portal to confirm the status is complete and check registered email for corrections or interview instructions. If a test authority issues an amendment, follow its new instructions and retain the notice. Do not wait for a school to contact you about a missing document if the official portal shows an incomplete task.
Keep a traceable application record
Save the version of every handbook and amendment you use. After entering information, download the application and check that the course, campus, category and test centre are correct. Verify that portfolio uploads open and remain within page or file-size limits. Save payment confirmation and any ticket raised with a help desk. If an interview or studio task is announced, check whether it is online or in person, what materials are allowed and whether the schedule is fixed. Do not rely on a third-party calendar for a changed date.
Prepare for studio and interview rounds
If the process includes a portfolio discussion, practise explaining the project context, your contribution, the decisions you made and what you would change now. A reviewer may ask about a constraint or a weak outcome; answer candidly and show how you learned from it. Check whether the institute expects original sketches, a laptop, physical models or other materials for a studio task. Bring only the items allowed in the official instructions. Keep your presentation concise and leave time for questions.
