Start with the named institute and campus
M.Des. eligibility is defined by each institute, campus and admission year. A broad course label cannot tell you which bachelor’s degrees are accepted, whether an age limit applies, how final-year students are treated or what documents are needed. Start with the current handbook for the exact programme. Record the educational qualification, reference date for age, category rules and any portfolio or work-experience requirement. NID’s 2026–27 handbook includes a route based on a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, subject to NID’s other age and documentation rules. This is an NID-specific example, not a universal M.Des. requirement. (NID 2026–27 Handbook)
Check degree duration and equivalence
Read each minimum qualification precisely. A rule may distinguish a degree from a diploma, require a minimum duration, specify a completion date or accept an equivalent credential only with formal recognition. If your degree was earned outside India, follow the handbook’s equivalence-document instructions. If you are in the final year, confirm what proof is needed at application, when the final result must be available and whether all examinations must be passed in the first attempt. Do not assume a design degree is always required, or that any bachelor’s degree is always accepted. NID’s published language belongs to its 2026–27 cycle; another school may require a relevant discipline, experience or additional selection steps. (NID Handbook)
Treat age and category rules as exact cycle conditions
Some admissions handbooks include age cut-offs or category-specific relaxations. These may use a precise date of birth reference and require particular certificates. Do not calculate eligibility from an old coaching page or prior year’s handbook. Read the current official clause, note its reference date and check the accepted certificate format. If your date is close to the boundary or your certificate is pending, ask the admissions office in writing before applying. NID’s 2026–27 handbook sets its own age criteria; NIFT’s 2026 bulletin identifies its M.Des. programme but refers applicants to its prospectus for detailed eligibility. These rules cannot be transferred to another institution. (NID Handbook; NIFT Bulletin)
Separate exam eligibility from programme eligibility
A candidate may be eligible to sit a design examination but still need to satisfy the institute’s own programme rules. CEED 2027 describes eligibility for its exam and says qualified candidates may apply to various institutes; the score does not guarantee admission. A school can add its own educational criteria, application form, portfolio, test, interview or merit formula. Check the exam brochure and the current institute notice separately. (CEED 2027)
Prepare a qualification checklist
For every school, make a row for degree title, completion status, age reference date, category documents, marks or equivalent-grade conversion, entrance score and portfolio format. Save the official handbook version and the relevant page. If your transcript uses an unfamiliar degree title, ask whether it is accepted as equivalent. Keep written replies and submit requested records through the official portal. Meeting a minimum condition only makes an application eligible for consideration; test performance, portfolio, interview, capacity and merit rules determine selection. No universal 2027–28 M.Des. eligibility rules were verified for this guide. Recheck the latest handbook before each future application.
Final-year applicants and documents
If you are still studying, check whether the programme permits an application before the final degree certificate is issued. The rules may require you to pass every paper by a stated date, submit provisional results, or provide a final transcript before enrolment. Ask whether internships, backlogs or supplementary examinations affect the completion condition. Save the exact clause and plan when your university can issue each document. For an overseas qualification, confirm which equivalence authority is accepted and when the certificate must be uploaded. A provisional offer may be cancelled if the documentation does not meet the condition.
Prepare your degree certificate or provisional certificate, all marksheets, grade-conversion details, identity record, category certificate if relevant, entrance registration and score, and portfolio materials in the required format. Check that names and dates match. If there is a discrepancy, ask the admissions office how it should be documented before the portal closes. Eligibility is not the same as selection: successful applicants may still need to clear tests, interviews and merit ranking.
Check equivalence before a close date
A school may interpret an unusual degree title, foreign qualification or combined programme differently from a standard bachelor’s degree. Write to the admissions office with the exact award name, awarding institution, duration and completion date. Ask what proof of equivalence it accepts and when the document must be provided. Do not assume that a transcript showing design courses establishes eligibility if the formal degree title differs. Keep the reply and attach it to your personal checklist.
