Official source →The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) admits students through NIFTEE, followed by course-specific assessments and a separate seat-allocation process. For the 2027 intake, the National Testing Agency (NTA) handles registration, the entrance tests, answer-key challenges and scorecards. NIFT handles admission-related matters, later stages and seat allocation. A test score is therefore one step in applying to a NIFT programme, not a campus offer by itself.
The 2027-28 admissions page lists 12 programmes across design, technology and management, with UG, PG and PhD study. The prospectus identifies seven BDes specialisations, B.F.Tech in Apparel Production and three regular masters routes: M.Des, M.F.M and M.F.Tech. It also describes PhD and separate application routes such as NIFT Lateral Entry Admission (NLEA), artisan applicants and international applicants. The sequence and requirements differ by route, so use the exact degree and category printed in the prospectus before following a calendar or preparing for a paper.
NIFTEE’s current published schedule lists the written examination for 10 January 2027. The bulletin labels dates tentative. Its Stage 1 result, later assessments, final result and seat-allocation months are estimates, not confirmed completed events or guaranteed dates. Check the live NTA portal and NIFT admissions page for notices and use the admit card for the final centre, date and shift.
BDes is the design route. Regular applicants take GAT and CAT, then shortlisted applicants take a hands-on Situation Test. GAT is computer based; CAT is paper based. The Situation Test asks candidates to make a model using supplied material and assesses spatial visualisation, creative use of material, composition, construction and presentation. The 2027 bulletin assigns the final merit 30% to GAT, 50% to CAT and 20% to Situation Test. A portfolio or a strong GAT score should not be assumed to replace the later stage.
BFTech is the Apparel Production technology route. Its selection uses GAT Sections A and B, weighted 30% and 70%. Section A is 120 minutes with 100 questions in the listed structure; Section B is 60 minutes with 50 questions and includes engineering-related quantitative, analytical and case-study content. Mathematics is a route-specific qualification requirement for the stated school-equivalent credentials. An eligible BFTech candidate may also opt for BDes through the integrated BFTech+BDes application, take CAT, and receive separate Common Merit Ranks for the two programmes. This option is not a general permission to choose any two programmes.
At postgraduate level, M.Des uses GAT Section A, CAT and a personal interview, weighted 30%, 40% and 30%. M.F.M uses GAT Sections A and B followed by PI, weighted 70% and 30%. M.F.Tech uses GAT and PI, also weighted 70% and 30%; its GAT includes engineering-field questions. An eligible MFM candidate may opt for both MFM and MDes using the integrated application and receives separate ranks. The bulletin lists regular bachelors as four years and masters as two years. The exam-pattern and eligibility pages should be consulted for the detailed course-specific sequence, not a single generalized “NIFT exam pattern.”
For regular BDes, the bulletin lists recognized 10+2, specified open-school, diploma and equivalent qualifications. BFTech’s school-equivalent routes require Mathematics, while a qualifying engineering diploma is another route. MDes and MFM accept an undergraduate degree in any discipline or an eligible three-year NIFT/NID diploma. MFTech requires NIFT BFTech, a recognized BE/BTech or a four-year BFTech. The regular UG age rule is below 24 on 1 August of the admission year, with a five-year relaxation for the listed SC/ST/PwD/PwBD categories. The regular masters routes have no upper age limit. These summaries are a starting check; exact qualification, equivalence and documentation rules remain in the prospectus.
For 2027, the regular application opened on 16 October 2026. The bulletin lists 16 November as the fee-paid deadline and 21 November as the late-fee deadline, with ₹5,000 added to the applicable examination fee. It lists a correction window from 22 to 25 November. The form is online. NIFT advises applicants to submit one form, keep the confirmation page and payment proof, and check that the chosen programme and category are correct. Two permitted combinations have distinct fees: BFTech+BDes and MFM+MDes. For one programme the listed examination fee is ₹2,000 for Open/Open-EWS/OBC-NCL and ₹500 for SC/ST/PwD/PwBD; the named two-programme forms are ₹3,000 and ₹750 respectively. The listed UG/PG international-category application fee is ₹11,100. Service charges may apply and the exam fee is non-refundable. Those figures are for applying to the test, not tuition.
NIFT publishes a separate 2026-27 academic-fee circular, but its tuition amounts are not reproduced here because the linked table was not read in this source pass. A sensible budget should use the correct campus and programme row, separate per-semester or annual recurring charges from one-time deposits, and note which deposits are refundable. Scholarships and financial assistance are also listed by NIFT; eligibility and award are not automatic. Do not use an entrance application fee as a proxy for the cost of the degree.
After the written exam, check the NTA/NIFT result notice for the programme-specific rank and whether a later assessment applies. NIFT’s published regular weights show why a single GAT score is not the final selection score for design programmes: CAT and, for BDes, the Situation Test contribute to the merit. MDes and MFM/MFTech use interview stages. Programme-specific merit is then considered during seat allocation against the available campus/course matrix and relevant category rules.
The 2027-28 admissions card says NIFT has 20 campuses, and the 2027 prospectus includes a seat table with 20 campus columns. The same admissions page’s older descriptive paragraph still says 19. Prefer the current cycle card and seat table, and recognize that the figure on the page is inconsistent. More importantly, course availability varies by campus. Check the exact row before ranking campuses in counselling. NIFT’s archived 2026-27 page shows prior rounds, e-counselling and spot-round notices, but that history does not establish the number, dates or rules of 2027 rounds.
For international applicants, artisans, NLEA applicants and PhD applicants, follow that route’s separate notice and timeline. Do not import a regular applicant’s age, test stages, deadline or fee into another category. The immediate next step for a 2027 applicant is to verify the correct course requirement, finish the online form, save the confirmation and payment receipt, then monitor NTA and NIFT updates. Use NIFTEE’s official portal for applications, admit cards and scorecards and NIFT Admissions for the prospectus, later assessment and counselling notices.
NIFT’s special routes are not just alternate labels for the regular examination. NLEA is a lateral-entry route for eligible candidates with specified related diplomas; BDes and BFTech NLEA then have their own GAT and practical/technical stages, interview and document verification. For NLEA BDes, the 2027 bulletin lists GAT, Studio Test and interview; for NLEA BFTech, it lists GAT, Technical Ability Test and interview. The regular entrance sequence and the lateral-entry selection weights differ, so candidates should read the NLEA section and its test schedule rather than use a regular BDes or BFTech preparation plan unchanged.
The Artisan Category is for an applicant who meets the academic qualification and can document the required artisan relationship or artisan card. The prospectus sets a separate Artisan Skill Test, interview and document verification process. This route is different from NLEA and from the ordinary BDes test sequence. Check the card issuer and proof requirements early; a candidate who has only begun an application for a card should verify the prospectus wording and deadline, rather than assume any craft experience alone qualifies.
NRI, foreign-national, OCI, PIO and SAARC applicants follow a separate process. NIFT’s FAQ says selection for eligible applicants in that route is based on SAT, GMAT or GRE scores; the current prospectus sets the applicable score and submission rules. The bulletin lists a separate registration and score-submission calendar. These applicants should not use the regular NTA form fee or assume that the regular written-test pathway applies. PhD applicants also have a separate research-oriented route with a written examination, proposal presentation and interview. The immediate practical question is therefore not only “Am I eligible for NIFT?” but “Which programme and admission route fits my qualification, and what evidence does that route require?”
Before paying, compare your qualification against the exact programme rule and decide whether you are applying to one course or to one of the explicitly permitted integrated combinations. The FAQ describes one form, not multiple duplicate forms. BFTech candidates with Mathematics who also meet BDes conditions may opt for the integrated BFTech+BDes route; eligible MFM applicants may opt for MFM+MDes. The two choices affect both the examination components and application fee, and lead to separate merit ranks. Do not pay for a combination on the assumption that it is a preference-only change later.
The 2027 FAQ asks applicants to select two or three test cities, but says NIFT/NTA may allot a different city for administrative or logistics reasons. A city choice is not a promise of a particular centre. Keep your permanent and current address details accurate, save the application confirmation page and fee proof, and check the admit card for the final centre, paper and shift. If the confirmation page does not appear after payment, the FAQ advises waiting for reconciliation and using the helpdesk rather than submitting repeated payments without checking status. Corrections that change category or number of programmes may require an additional amount; check the official fee table before finalising the correction.
After the written result, use the notice to identify the exact programme rank and next-stage call. A BDes candidate shortlisted for Situation Test should follow that test’s materials and venue instructions. A PG candidate should prepare for the listed interview and documentation. NLEA and artisan applicants should use the route-specific call letter. Then use NIFT’s e-counselling or seat-allocation notices to review available choices; do not treat a rank from one programme as if it automatically applies to another. The 2026 archive shows how NIFT has issued round-wise results and spot-round notices, but the 2027 schedule and round rules must come from the new cycle’s notices.
A careful applicant can move through four checks: confirm the qualifying credential and age rule; choose the regular or special category and correct programme combination; verify the current deadline, fee and receipt; then prepare for the actual test stages and later seat allocation. This avoids the common mistake of focusing on the January written test while overlooking the eligibility documents, Stage 2 or campus choices that determine whether a score can turn into an admission.
