The 2027 BITSAT syllabus and paper pattern were not published on the official pages checked by 27 October 2026. The latest detailed document is the official BITSAT 2026 brochure. Its syllabus and format below are explicitly historical and should be used as a preparation map only until the next brochure is released.
BITSAT 2026 paper pattern
The 2026 brochure specified a three-hour computer-based test with 130 objective questions, each offering four options and one correct answer. A correct answer earned three marks and an incorrect answer lost one mark; an unanswered question earned zero. Candidates could skip items and move among the 130 questions, including changing earlier responses, while the test was in progress. There was no separate time limit for an individual part.
Mathematics was the usual Part IV choice. The brochure also allowed Biology for B.Pharm., B.E. Environmental and Sustainability Engineering, and M.Sc. Biological Sciences. Candidates must check that the chosen subject route is allowed for the programme and their Class 12 subjects under the current brochure.
There was an optional extra-question feature in 2026. A candidate who attempted all 130 questions could choose to answer up to 12 additional questions if time remained: three each from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology and Logical Reasoning. Once the candidate chose this option, the earlier 130 answers could no longer be revisited. The extra set was therefore a one-way decision with possible scoring upside and no opportunity to repair earlier answers. The brochure warned that wrong answers attracted negative marking, so the feature did not make blind guessing a sound strategy.
The test instructions and questions were in English. A scratch pad was provided at the centre and had to be returned; calculators, phones, electronic devices, tables and unauthorised materials were prohibited by the 2026 brochure. Use the active year's hall-ticket instructions for the current permitted-items list.
What the official syllabus covers
The 2026 brochure's Physics syllabus began with units, measurement, dimensional analysis and significant figures, then covered kinematics, Newton's laws, momentum, work and energy, rotation and gravitation. It continued through solids and fluids, oscillations, waves, heat and thermodynamics, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, optics, modern physics and electronic devices. The official list includes named subtopics such as free-body diagrams, collisions, centre of mass, rolling motion, Bernoulli's theorem, resonance, LCR circuits, interference, photoelectric effect, radioactivity, semiconductor devices and logic gates. Use the brochure's numbered list to check the specific boundaries within each heading.
Chemistry spans physical, inorganic and organic areas. The 2026 list starts with states of matter and atomic structure, followed by periodicity and bonding, hydrogen and s-block elements, p-, d- and f-block elements, coordination compounds, environmental chemistry, chemical energetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics and surface chemistry. Organic coverage includes purification and characterisation, basic principles, hydrocarbons, halogen- and oxygen-containing compounds, nitrogen compounds, polymers, biomolecules and chemistry in everyday life. The syllabus names subtopics within these units, so a chapter title alone is not a complete checklist.
Mathematics covers algebra, trigonometry, two- and three-dimensional coordinate geometry, differential calculus, integral calculus, differential equations, probability, statistics, vectors and linear programming. Biology includes diversity and classification, cell biology, genetics and evolution, plant and human physiology, reproduction, ecology, biology and human welfare, and biotechnology. For both subjects, consult the official list for the exact subtopic wording and any stated exclusions.
English proficiency and logical reasoning are separate components, not optional extras. The brochure describes English through grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and related usage skills. Logical reasoning includes verbal and non-verbal reasoning tasks. Include both in preparation time even though each accounts for fewer questions than the major science or mathematics sections.
How to turn the syllabus into a study plan
Start with the numbered official syllabus rather than an assumed board or coaching curriculum. Mark each subtopic as familiar, partly secure or not yet studied. Then practise retrieval and timed problem solving across all tested parts. The 2026 exam placed 30 Physics and 30 Chemistry questions alongside 30 combined English and reasoning questions, plus a 40-question Mathematics/Biology choice. A plan that allocates time only to PCM can therefore leave 30 questions' worth of tested verbal and reasoning content without deliberate practice.
Use the negative-marking rule when reviewing practice: record accuracy and skipped questions, not only attempted volume. Practise navigating between questions and deciding when to move on, since the brochure allowed answer changes within the main 130-question set. If attempting every main question before considering extras, practise that sequence deliberately; the extra-question choice removes the ability to return to earlier answers.
BITS' 2026 FAQ said the institute does not provide model question papers and directs candidates to the syllabus in the brochure. A third-party question bank should not be presented as an official BITS paper. Check that any practice set matches the current cycle's syllabus and format, and return to the official brochure when a chapter list or attempt rule is unclear.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions were in BITSAT 2026? The 2026 brochure specified 130 main questions across Physics, Chemistry, English proficiency, logical reasoning and Mathematics or Biology.
What was the marking scheme? Three marks for a correct response, minus one for an incorrect response and zero for an unanswered question.
Can I choose Biology? The 2026 brochure permitted Biology in Part IV for B.Pharm., B.E. Environmental and Sustainability Engineering, and M.Sc. Biological Sciences. Confirm programme eligibility and the 2027 rules in the new brochure.
Does BITS publish official model papers? Its 2026 FAQ said it does not provide model question papers; it points candidates to the official syllabus.
Are these the BITSAT 2027 rules? No. They describe the 2026 brochure, the latest detailed pattern found by 27 October 2026.
