Which qualification route applies?
Eligibility rules below are taken from the Joint CSIR-UGC NET December 2026 Information Bulletin. They are not a guarantee of fellowship, a faculty appointment or admission to a particular PhD programme. The first decision is which educational route applies: a completed or ongoing Master’s degree, or a four-year/eight-semester bachelor’s degree. The percentage threshold, provisional conditions and outcome categories differ, so do not combine the two routes into one generic “postgraduate eligibility” rule.
For the Master’s route, General/Unreserved and General-EWS applicants need at least 55% marks in a Master’s degree or equivalent examination from a recognised university or institution. OBC candidates must be in the Non-Creamy Layer; OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender candidates need at least 50%. The bulletin says these marks are “without rounding off.” A result that displays 54.99% should not be assumed to satisfy a 55% threshold. If the transcript reports a grade point rather than percentage, check the university’s conversion and the bulletin’s applicable conditions instead of estimating a conversion yourself.
The bulletin provides a separate five-percentage-point relaxation for PhD degree holders whose Master’s-level examination was completed by 19 September 1991. This is a specific historic qualification condition, not a general relaxation for all PhD holders. Candidates with a foreign qualification are advised to obtain UGC equivalence; candidates with a postgraduate diploma awarded by an Indian Institute are advised to ascertain Master’s equivalence through the Association of Indian Universities. These are practical verification steps when the credential is not plainly a recognised Master’s degree.
Final-year and provisional applicants
Candidates pursuing a Master’s degree, awaiting their final-year result, or delayed in a qualifying examination may apply provisionally. They are not treated as finally eligible merely because the application is accepted. They must pass the Master’s or equivalent examination with the required marks, and the deadline to complete the qualification depends on the result category: within two years from the NET result for candidates qualifying for JRF or Assistant Professor, and within one year for those qualifying for “Admission to Ph.D. Only.” Failure to meet the applicable completion condition means disqualification under the bulletin.
That distinction affects planning. A final-year candidate should keep the expected result date and degree completion evidence available, then compare them with the actual CSIR-UGC NET result date and category. Because the completion window runs from the exam result, it cannot be calculated from an assumed date before the result is declared. Candidates should also check whether their degree and marks meet the rule, not only whether they can submit the online form. NTA says candidate information is not verified at registration and candidature remains provisional subject to eligibility; an application receipt is not an eligibility confirmation.
Four-year bachelor’s degree route
A candidate who has passed a four-year or eight-semester bachelor’s programme needs 75% aggregate marks, or equivalent grade on a point scale. The bulletin permits a 5-percentage-point relaxation for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD and EWS applicants, with the policy reference to UGC’s PhD regulations. Candidates qualifying through this route may be considered for JRF and PhD admission, but they are not eligible for Assistant Professor appointment through this route. This is a significant route limitation: a high four-year bachelor’s score does not substitute for the Master’s requirement for Assistant Professor eligibility.
Candidates in the last semester or year of the four-year programme may also apply provisionally. They must later fulfil the UGC PhD-regulation requirements within two years if qualifying for JRF or within one year if qualifying for PhD admission only. The bulletin also allows a four-year bachelor’s candidate to choose the subject in which they intend to pursue a PhD irrespective of the discipline of the bachelor’s degree. That option is an examination eligibility rule; it does not establish that every university will accept that subject/degree combination for its own doctoral intake. Confirm the target institution’s discipline mapping and admission notice separately.
The four-year route is not a short way to claim all three result categories. The bulletin explicitly limits it to JRF and PhD admission, with no Assistant Professor eligibility. Candidates should choose a target subject that aligns with their research plan and then confirm whether the receiving department accepts that subject. If the applicant is also close to completing a Master’s degree, compare the two routes against the exact marks, degree-completion dates and outcome sought before selecting the route in the form.
Age rules, category evidence and final checks
For the December 2026 JRF route, the upper age limit is 30 years on the first day of the month in which the examination concludes, stated as December 2026. The bulletin provides up to five years of relaxation for OBC-NCL candidates on the Central List, SC/ST/PwD/PwBD/Third Gender categories and women applicants. It also describes limited relaxation for documented research experience and armed-forces service, subject to the stated conditions and a combined maximum age relaxation of five years. Applicants relying on a relaxation should read the full clause and retain the required certificates; the headline age limit alone does not determine the candidate’s final age calculation.
There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD-only admission under the December 2026 bulletin. That does not remove the separate educational, category or institution-level requirements. Third Gender candidates receive the same fee, age and educational-eligibility relaxation as SC/ST/PwD/PwBD candidates, and the bulletin sets their subject-wise cutoff using the lowest applicable cutoff among specified categories. The precise application category still needs to match the candidate’s documents and the form instructions.
Before applying, check four things against official records: the exact qualification and university recognition; the marks calculation without rounding; the category-specific threshold and valid category evidence; and whether the chosen route leads to the result category the student needs. For an ongoing degree, calculate the completion deadline only after the result date and category are known. For foreign degrees or Indian postgraduate diplomas, resolve equivalence early. For the four-year route, verify the 75%/relaxation calculation and remember that it does not confer Assistant Professor eligibility.
Finally, separate exam eligibility from admission eligibility. Qualifying the test does not ensure a PhD seat, and an institution may have its own subject fit, interview, eligibility and document requirements. The December bulletin’s conditions apply to that session; an unannounced later cycle may change its thresholds, age date or documentary requirements. Check the official bulletin for the session you actually apply to rather than carrying the December 2026 age cutoff into a future application.
