A NEET-PG cutoff can mean two different things
Candidates often use “cutoff” for two different thresholds. The exam qualifying percentile is the minimum result threshold for the examination cycle. A counselling cutoff or closing rank is the last candidate allotted a particular seat in a specific authority, quota, course, category and round. Clearing the exam threshold does not guarantee a seat, and a prior-year closing rank is not a promise of future admission.
The latest directly opened NBEMS qualifying table in this review is for NEET-PG 2025. It listed 50th percentile for General and EWS candidates, 40th percentile for SC, ST and OBC candidates including PwD candidates in those categories, and 45th percentile for UR-PwD candidates. These are the 2025 examination criteria only. The NBEMS NEET-PG 2025 Information Bulletin also explains that normalized marks were used for ranking and qualification; raw marks were not reported after normalization. Do not compare a raw-score estimate with a qualifying percentile or treat this table as the rule for 2027.
Counselling eligibility can change separately from the exam result. In a dated example, MCC posted a notice on 4 January 2025 stating that the percentile for NEET-PG 2024 counselling had been lowered: General/EWS candidates at or above the 15th percentile and SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates at or above the 10th percentile could participate. This was an adjustment for 2024 counselling, not a 2025 examination threshold and not a general rule for future sessions. The MCC notice shows why candidates should distinguish an exam’s original qualifying standard from a later counselling eligibility decision.
What a closing rank does and does not tell you
A closing rank describes an observed allotment boundary for a defined seat and round. To use one responsibly, you need the examination and counselling year, counselling authority, round, institution, course, quota, category and rank basis. If any of those labels differ, the number may answer a different question. An All India Quota MD seat, an institute quota seat and a state-quota seat do not share one interchangeable cutoff. Nor does a closing rank for one specialty at one college establish the threshold for another specialty or college.
MCC publishes official allotment results and archived notices by session and round on its PG Medical Counselling page and PG archive. The archive lists, for example, the final Round 1 result for PG Counselling 2025 and results for later rounds, alongside notices and revised schedules. These records are the right starting point for a dated MCC comparison. A state counselling cutoff must instead be checked with that state’s own authority because its merit list, reservation and eligibility rules may differ.
When reading an allotment result, find the exact row for your target course and seat type. Check whether the document reports an All India Rank, state rank, category rank, marks or another measure. Do not compare a state rank with an All India Rank. Note whether the candidate was allotted, retained, upgraded or listed provisionally, and confirm whether a later revised result replaced the first one. A round’s virtual vacancy list or seat matrix is not a final cutoff: it shows possible availability or process inputs, not the completed allotment boundary.
How to compare historical cutoffs
Build a small comparison table with one row per comparable seat and columns for year, authority, round, course, institution, quota, category, rank measure, closing value and source document. Keep the original official result link beside each row. If the source is a PDF result, record the page or row identifier so you can return to it. Exclude rows that differ materially rather than averaging unlike seats into one number.
Compare matching rows across years only after checking whether the seat matrix and rules are comparable. A college may add or withdraw seats; a counselling authority may revise a schedule, change eligibility or conduct extra rounds. MCC’s archive records both round results and notices, including a 2024 counselling percentile reduction notice posted in January 2025. That dated change is a reason to read notices around the result, not just the final rank table. A seemingly lower closing rank may also reflect a different round, quota conversion or seat category rather than a broad change in candidate preference.
Use historical closing ranks to set a range of choices, not to decide that you will or will not receive a seat. Put options into three groups: preferred choices, acceptable alternatives, and choices you would not join. Then verify the current seat matrix, eligibility for the relevant pool, document requirements and rules for accepting or upgrading an allotment. The rank comparison helps you understand past competition; the current rules determine whether you can participate and what happens after an offer.
Practical meaning for 2027 applicants
No 2027 NEET-PG qualifying percentile or counselling closing rank was confirmed in the official material reviewed for this page. Do not project the 2025 exam threshold or the special 2024 counselling reduction forward. Also avoid websites that present a single “NEET-PG cutoff” without saying whether the number is a qualifying percentile, rank, marks, counselling eligibility threshold or closing allotment value.
When your cycle’s result appears, first check the official scorecard and the applicable qualifying criteria. Next, identify which counselling authorities handle the seats you want. For each authority, open the current bulletin, seat matrix, schedule and result notices. Use the exact year, round, category, quota and course labels in your comparison. If a cutoff is revised or eligibility is relaxed, use the latest notice for that session and preserve the previous version only as history.
The useful takeaway is not a forecast number. It is a way to read numbers without confusing exam qualification with admission competition. A percentile tells you whether you met a defined exam or counselling threshold; a closing rank records a specific past allotment. Both need their own year, category and process attached. For the next intake, wait for the governing NBEMS and counselling notices before treating any threshold or closing rank as current.
