NMAT eligibility: who can take the exam and who qualifies for a school
NMAT by GMAC exam eligibility and MBA admission eligibility are separate decisions. GMAC says a test taker who completes registration, pays within the stated time and follows the exam terms may sit the exam. It is each participating business school that sets the degree, marks, work-experience, category and other requirements for its own programme. A candidate can therefore be eligible to take NMAT but ineligible for a particular MBA, or eligible for a programme but miss its application deadline. Check both sets of rules before paying or choosing score recipients.
As of 27 October 2026, the official 2026 first-attempt registration period has closed. The currently published exam delivery period is 2 November–20 December 2026. The official NMAT page has not announced a separate 2027 test calendar. Those are exam-cycle facts, not a statement about which academic intake a school will accept. For a 2027 admission plan, verify directly whether the programme accepts a 2026 testing-year score and the deadline by which it must be received.
Two eligibility questions, two authorities
1. May I register and sit for NMAT?
The official NMAT FAQ states that candidates who complete the test registration process, pay the fee within the allowed time and comply with the published exam terms may sit the exam. The exam administrator does not prescribe a universal bachelor’s degree or minimum undergraduate percentage as a condition for sitting NMAT. The candidate still has to supply accurate registration details, meet identification and exam-delivery rules, and follow account and security policies.
That is a narrow test-taking rule. It does not certify that the candidate meets any school’s admission criteria. GMAC cautions candidates to check the requirements of every university or business school they plan to apply to before registering; it also states that the test fee is not refunded merely because a candidate later discovers they are ineligible for a desired programme. If admission eligibility is uncertain, resolve it with the school before spending on the exam.
2. Am I eligible for the exact programme I want?
Only the institution can answer this. Requirements can differ by school, degree and campus. A school may specify a recognised bachelor’s degree, a minimum aggregate or equivalent grade, a final-year exception, work experience, category documentation, age or nationality conditions, and separate application requirements. This article does not assign any of those conditions to all NMAT schools because there is no single common admission standard imposed by the exam administrator.
The most reliable check is the current official admissions page or prospectus for the exact programme and intake. Confirm that the page is for the correct academic year, not a cached or prior-cycle notice. If a school’s page is ambiguous about a degree, grading system, pending result or accepted test year, contact the institution’s admissions office and retain the written response. Do not use a coaching-site summary as a substitute for the current school rule.
A practical eligibility decision path
First, identify the programme. Write down the institution, programme name, campus and intake year. “MBA eligibility” is too broad because one university can set different conditions for its core MBA, specialised degrees and executive programmes.
Second, verify the academic requirement. Check the exact qualification the school accepts, the required marks or equivalent CGPA, whether the degree must be complete by a stated date, and how the school treats final-year candidates. If your degree is from outside India or uses a non-percentage grading scale, check the official equivalence process rather than converting marks yourself. The exam administrator does not determine how a university evaluates an undergraduate transcript.
Third, check additional conditions. Look for work-experience requirements, category or domicile rules, nationality conditions, documents, age limits if any, and programme-specific prerequisites. Do not assume a condition from one school applies to another. Conversely, do not assume that the absence of a condition on a third-party page means the institution has waived it.
Fourth, verify NMAT acceptance. Confirm that the specific programme accepts NMAT scores for the desired admission cycle and the relevant testing year. Some institutions may accept NMAT for certain programmes but use another test for others. The exam’s list of accepting schools is a useful starting point, but the institution’s current programme page controls its application process.
Fifth, check the application deadline and score process. Registration for the exam is not an application. The institution may require a separate online form, fee, documents, interview or other selection stages. Confirm when the score must be sent and whether the candidate must select the programme in the NMAT dashboard, submit a separate application, or do both.
Finally, keep evidence of the rule. Save the dated prospectus or admissions-page link and any written clarification from the institution. If the school later changes a deadline or test acceptance policy, check the updated official notice. The candidate’s dashboard governs exam scheduling; the school’s admissions office governs its own eligibility and application decisions.
Candidate details and exam-day eligibility
Even where a candidate meets the school’s academic rules, the exam registration can be affected by incorrect candidate details or failure to meet test-day rules. The NMAT registration instructions require the name and date of birth to match the photo ID. The candidate is asked to upload a recent photograph, no more than six months old, that resembles the test taker and matches the ID; the photograph appears on the admit card. Use the same identity details throughout the account and the application, and correct discrepancies through official support before the test rather than creating a duplicate registration.
The 2026 exam is available through modes described by the official materials, including test centre and online-proctored options in India; the FAQ describes online-at-home delivery for the rest of the world. Mode and location availability can depend on the testing region and the current cycle. Check the live dashboard for what is offered to your account. A candidate choosing an at-home exam must satisfy the applicable technical and room requirements; someone choosing a centre must bring the specified ID and admit card. These are exam-delivery conditions, not MBA admission criteria.
GMAC warns against duplicate or multiple registrations. Creating a second registration to apply to more than one NMAT-accepting school is not allowed; one registration supports the permitted attempts and score sending. The FAQ says duplicate registrations may result in rejection and forfeiture of the fee. If an account contains an error or a payment issue, use the official support channel to resolve it rather than opening another profile.
Different candidate situations to verify
Final-year undergraduate students
The exam itself does not impose a degree-completion rule for sitting it, but a school may allow final-year students only if they complete the degree by a specified date or submit proof by a later document deadline. Check the programme’s exact condition for pending results, provisional admission and backlogs. Do not interpret permission to take NMAT as permission to join a programme before meeting its graduation requirement.
Graduates with different grading systems
Applicants whose universities report CGPA, grades or a non-percentage scale should follow the target institution’s conversion or equivalence method. A self-calculated percentage may not match the method used by admissions. International qualifications can require an equivalence certificate or additional documents, but the requirement is institution-specific. Ask the school which transcript and conversion evidence it accepts.
Applicants with work experience
Work experience may be required, preferred or irrelevant depending on the programme. The NMAT exam’s general registration rule does not create a common experience threshold. Confirm whether a school counts full-time post-degree work, internships, family business or part-time work, and what date it uses to calculate duration. If the programme is executive or specialised, read its own requirements rather than applying the rules for a regular MBA.
Applicants using a category or reservation claim
The NMAT application includes a category field for Indian candidates, with options described in the official registration FAQ. Completing that exam form field does not by itself confer a reservation benefit at an institution. Each school determines which categories it recognises, the certificate format and issuing authority, the relevant date, and the way the category affects its selection process. Foreign nationals are instructed by the FAQ to select GEN in the NMAT form; school-level international admission rules remain separate.
International candidates
Exam delivery and university admission are different. The official FAQ says candidates outside India take the online-proctored exam at home, while candidates in India may have centre and at-home choices subject to the current delivery rules. A school may set separate requirements for international applicants, including accepted degree documentation, language evidence, passport or visa details and application route. Verify those directly with the institution. Do not infer admission eligibility from the candidate’s ability to register for the test from another country.
NMIMS and other accepting schools
NMAT by GMAC is a score accepted by multiple participating business schools, but acceptance does not make their admissions processes identical. NMIMS programme rules are set by NMIMS, not by GMAC. The same separation applies to every other accepting institution: the school determines eligibility, the application form, deadline, shortlist process, interview and final offer. A candidate should confirm the exact programme rather than relying on a broad claim such as “NMAT is accepted by this college.”
Before selecting a school in the score-report dashboard, answer these questions from its current official site: Is NMAT accepted for this programme and intake? Which testing year is accepted? What is the final score-receipt date? What degree and marks are required? Is a final-year applicant permitted? Are there work-experience or category rules? Is a separate application required, and when does it close? A “yes” to score acceptance does not answer the other questions.
2026 cycle implications
The official 2026 registration deadline was 25 October and has passed. If you already registered, you may proceed with the booked appointment in the published 2 November–20 December delivery window, subject to the dashboard’s exact status and exam rules. If you did not register, do not assume that a retake window is available to a new candidate. No separate 2027 test schedule is published as of 27 October 2026.
If your intended admission is in 2027, the key eligibility question is not simply whether you can take a 2026 test. It is whether the target programme accepts a 2026 NMAT score for its 2027 intake, and whether its own application deadline and academic requirements are still achievable. Verify that mapping at the institution. Until the school confirms the accepted year, treat the score’s usefulness for that intake as unknown.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a minimum graduation percentage to sit for NMAT?
GMAC’s exam FAQ says candidates who complete registration, pay the fee and follow exam terms may sit. It does not set a universal graduation percentage for taking the test. Individual schools may impose marks or degree conditions for admission.
Can a final-year student take NMAT?
The exam’s general registration rule does not require a completed degree. Whether a final-year student is eligible for a particular MBA, and by what date the degree must be completed, is set by that school.
Does NMAT registration mean I am eligible for NMIMS?
No. NMAT registration concerns the test. NMIMS sets its programme eligibility and separate application conditions. Check the current official NMIMS page for the precise programme and intake.
Can I create separate NMAT accounts for different colleges?
No. The official FAQ warns against duplicate registrations. Use one account and follow the permitted score-report and attempt process.
Is NMAT eligibility the same for Indian and international candidates?
Exam delivery options vary by region, and the exam form includes candidate-specific instructions. Schools can also have separate international admission requirements. Verify both the current exam delivery rules and the school’s official policy.
Can I use NMAT 2026 for 2027 admission?
Only if the specific programme accepts that testing year and score by its stated deadline. Exam-year and admission-year are separate; GMAC does not set each school’s acceptance window.
