B.Ed is Now a 4-Year Course
Last updated: April 20, 2026
B.Ed is now a four-year course. This could be your last chance for the two-year program.
To improve teacher education standards, preparations are underway to change the B.Ed structure again. The course was previously extended from one year to two years. Now, it's moving from two years to four. This will be an integrated B.Ed program, similar to LLB and MBA, which will include graduation. Students will be able to enroll directly after intermediate (12th standard).
The proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). The HRD Ministry is now working to phase out the two-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course and start a four-year Integrated B.Ed Course. If approved, this year could be the last for the two-year B.Ed program in state colleges. Discussions are ongoing to close the two-year program.
Ministry officials state the goal is to attract serious candidates to the teaching profession. A teacher should be a teacher by choice, not by chance. The ministry has written to NCTE to begin work on the Integrated B.Ed Course. It's expected that the next academic session will offer the Integrated B.Ed Course after the 12th standard. Students will then be able to take admission in combined courses like BA-BEd or BSc-BEd.
The new proposed course will be four years long. Currently, the system requires a three-year undergraduate degree followed by two additional years for B.Ed. The B.Sc/B.Ed Integrated Four-Year Courses will be similar to B.Sc + B.Ed. After completing this course, students will be eligible for postgraduate degrees in their respective subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics).
According to ministry officials, this change will stop the "shops" running in the name of B.Ed. Aspirants will earn their B.Ed degree from the university itself and won't need a separate course after graduation.
A committee formed under the chairmanship of TSR Subramanyam to create a new education policy also recommended converting the existing two-year B.Ed course into a four-year integrated course. However, that committee's draft was not adopted as policy; it was considered part of the suggestions received.
The Ministry has also decided to shut down all teacher education programs offered through remote-learning to improve quality. Working teachers will still have the option of a remote-learning B.Ed, which they must complete within three years.
