For IIT Kharagpur undergraduate admissions, the official opening and closing ranks are published through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) process. JoSAA’s 2026 rank interface is explicitly for the 2026-27 academic year. It requires the reader to choose a round, institute type, institute, academic programme and seat type or category. A cutoff is therefore not one universal number for IIT Kharagpur. It is a past allocation result for a precisely filtered combination.
A closing rank describes the last rank that received a seat in that selected row and round; the opening rank describes the first. These ranks record what happened in a completed allocation. They are not JEE Advanced marks, a future-year forecast, a minimum score guarantee, or proof that a candidate with a similar rank will receive the same branch in the next cycle. Seat availability, the order of candidate preferences, category and seat pool, withdrawals, and the round all affect the observed boundary. The next cycle’s applicant choices and seat matrix can change the result.
Start at JoSAA’s Opening and Closing Ranks portal and open the session you want to study. For the IIT system, select the IIT institute type, then Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and the exact academic programme. Choose the round and seat type or category. Keep the gender pool consistent too: gender-neutral and female-only seat pools are different rows where available. Programme labels and degree types matter; do not combine a four-year B.Tech with a five-year integrated, dual-degree or architecture programme simply because their names share a discipline.
JoSAA explains that ranks for OPEN seats represent the Common Rank List (CRL). EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST seats use the respective category ranks, while PwD seats use PwD ranks within those categories. A closing or opening rank ending in “P” is from the preparatory rank list. These are distinct scales. A value such as 500 in CRL is not directly comparable with 500 in a category-rank row. Always retain the seat type and rank-list type alongside the numeric rank.
JoSAA publishes institute-wise results and opening and closing ranks after each allotment round. As the rounds progress, candidate choices and vacancies change, so an early-round closing rank and the last available round’s closing rank answer different questions. When making a comparison, write down the counselling year and round with every value. If a page or spreadsheet shows a branch name without these details, return to the original JoSAA interface before using it.
For historical trends, JoSAA maintains an archive of previous years’ opening and closing ranks. Choose the same programme, category, seat type, gender pool and comparable round across years. Confirm that the programme existed under the same title and degree duration in each year; if the programme or seat matrix changed, state that limitation instead of presenting a clean trend line. A multi-year table is more useful when it includes the source link and the filter settings, not just a sequence of closing ranks.
Use past ranks to create a range of preferences rather than a single target. First list the programmes you would genuinely accept, in your own priority order. Then use JoSAA’s official ranks to understand which options have historically been more or less competitive for your category and seat pool. This can help organize research, but the order in the JoSAA choice form should reflect your real preferences, not an attempt to game one past cutoff. Review the current business rules and seat matrix before registering.
When you save a rank, preserve at least six fields: year, round, institute, academic programme, seat type/category and gender pool. Add the rank scale (CRL, category rank or preparatory rank) and record both opening and closing values. If a filter combination returns no row, check that you selected the correct year, category, programme and round. An empty display is not a zero cutoff and does not prove that no seats existed. Consult the official allocation result or JoSAA helpdesk if the interface remains unclear.
The task edition for this article is 2027-28, but the official JoSAA rank page opened for this source check was the 2026-27 cycle. This article explains how to use that official tool; it does not relabel 2026 ranks as 2027 ranks and does not invent branch-wise numeric cutoffs. As of 27 October 2026, the opened official materials did not provide a 2027-28 JoSAA rank table. Once JoSAA publishes the next cycle’s rank interface, repeat the filters for that year and cite the displayed round and category. Keep the original result page or a dated capture with your notes so later revisions remain tied to the same published round. Use the official year archive as the starting point for earlier comparisons.
An applicant should use cutoff history together with the JEE Advanced eligibility rules, the seat matrix and current JoSAA business rules. Qualification for JEE Advanced does not itself promise admission to a particular programme. A published past rank is one planning input; eligibility, category documentation, preferences, seat availability and timely completion of JoSAA steps still govern an actual allocation.
