Which funding route fits your programme?
IIT Mandi lists separate support routes for undergraduate and research students. Its current academic scholarships page directs eligible students to the Merit-cum-Means (McM) rules for General and OBC students and the Institute SC/ST Scholarship; it separately lists HTRA support for M.S., M.Tech. and Ph.D. scholars, the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), and the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF). These are distinct schemes with different programme scopes, eligibility tests and application channels. Start with the page for your degree, then read the linked notice for the year you will apply. For a new undergraduate, the practical first distinction is between tuition-fee remission and a scholarship award. IIT Mandi’s JoSAA 2026 orientation page describes income-based tuition remission for UR, General-EWS and OBC-NCL entrants, while pointing to separate documents for institute scholarships. A fee concession reduces the amount billed; it does not by itself establish eligibility for a recurring cash award. The orientation page is cycle-specific and must not be treated as a standing promise for the 2027-28 intake. JoSAA 2026 orientation and fee-concession instructions
The institute’s scholarship index identifies an McM scheme for General/OBC students and an Institute SC/ST scholarship, with revised guidelines linked from the academic office. The same index points students to NSP for the National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students and other schemes. An external scholarship has its own eligibility rules and portal dates; being enrolled at IIT Mandi does not automatically qualify a student. Check the scheme owner’s current notification, the institute’s verification requirements and any category or income documentation before budgeting around an award.
Undergraduate fee remission and the documents that matter
For the 2026 JoSAA admission cycle, IIT Mandi’s orientation page sets out the family-income thresholds for tuition-fee remission for UR/General-EWS/OBC-NCL entrants. It says students with annual family income below ₹1 lakh receive full tuition-fee remission, while students with income from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh receive remission of two-thirds of tuition. Students in these income groups must submit a valid family-income certificate and notarised affidavit. The page says the certificate should be issued on or after 1 April 2026 and that both documents must be uploaded on the SAMARTH portal during the specified fee-payment/update process. Without them, the student pays the full fee applicable to family income above ₹5 lakh. These are the 2026 intake instructions, not confirmed 2027-28 amounts or dates. IIT Mandi 2026 fee-concession instructions
The same page lists a first-semester total of ₹1,55,234 for the above-₹5-lakh UR/General-EWS/OBC-NCL group, ₹88,567 for the ₹1-5-lakh group, and ₹55,234 for the below-₹1-lakh group, each including the stated ₹37,234 hostel, mess and campus-amenities charges. It lists ₹55,234 for SC/ST/PwD entrants and separately identifies the supporting caste/category or benchmark-disability certificate. These totals combine categories and charges; they are not the scholarship value. JoSAA seat-acceptance payments and adjustments also affect the amount payable to IIT Mandi, so use the cycle’s actual orientation table and payment instructions rather than subtracting a prior year’s numbers from a new bill.
The orientation instructions include family-income documentation among the registration uploads and warn that absent income documents can mean payment of the full fee. Applicants claiming remission should therefore prepare the certificate and affidavit early, confirm the accepted issuing authority and format, and keep proof of upload. A family income threshold in a fee table should not be mistaken for automatic approval: the institute’s stated submission process and verification still apply. For the newest intake, check the orientation page, official fee notice and SAMARTH portal together; the date of issue and upload deadline can change from cycle to cycle.
McM, Institute SC/ST, NSP and PMRF
IIT Mandi’s current scholarship index links its revised McM guidelines for General/OBC students and Institute SC/ST Scholarship. It also provides an institute affidavit format used for tuition-fee remission and institute scholarships. The linked three-page guidelines are the decision source for award conditions; the public index alone does not state current award amounts, household-income cutoffs, academic continuation rules, number of awards or application dates. Those details should be read from the live guideline and the relevant notice for the applicant’s cohort. The older 2022-23 UG Academic Handbook says that McM awards were limited to 25% of each year’s strength in each branch and describes tuition exemption plus a monthly award, but that dated handbook is historical context, not a substitute for the revised current guidelines. The Institute SC/ST Scholarship is also distinct from the central-sector scholarship listed on IIT Mandi’s older scholarship page and from schemes available through NSP. The current academic page points ST students to the National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students and other scholarships on NSP. NSP’s official portal currently displays the 2026-27 academic year and states that students may apply for one merit-based scheme and one or more welfare-based schemes subject to each scheme’s eligibility. That broad portal rule does not confirm that a particular IIT Mandi student qualifies for a specific scheme. Applicants should check the live scheme notice, state/category rules, application window and institute verification steps. National Scholarship Portal
HTRA appears on IIT Mandi’s academic page for M.S., M.Tech. and Ph.D. students or scholars, rather than as the undergraduate McM award. Its detailed HTRA notice is linked separately; eligibility and fellowship conditions belong to the particular research admission call and should be checked there. PMRF is another research fellowship route. IIT Mandi’s PMRF page describes it as a national selection scheme and publishes selected candidates by cycle, but that historical list is not an application notice or evidence that every IIT Mandi doctoral applicant will receive PMRF. Research applicants should read the current department advertisement and the PMRF scheme’s own rules, including any selection route, academic criteria and review conditions, before treating fellowship support as part of their funding plan. A practical verification sequence
First, identify the exact programme and intake year. The institute lists undergraduate fee remission separately from research assistantships and external schemes, and a rule for one programme should not be transferred to another. Second, distinguish the benefit: tuition remission, a monthly scholarship, a research assistantship or an external award affect costs in different ways. Third, open the current scheme notice and confirm the applicable income/category test, academic conditions, award duration, continuation requirements, application dates and document format. The scholarship index is a starting point, while the linked PDF or current admission notice contains the operative terms.
For an undergraduate seeking income-based remission, the 2026 instructions specify an income certificate and notarised affidavit, with an issue-date condition and upload route. Keep those documents and verify the corresponding dates and process when the next intake’s orientation notice appears. For an institute scholarship, use the revised McM/SC/ST guidelines and the latest application notice. For an external scheme, follow the central portal’s scheme-specific page and keep the institute verification timeline in view. For HTRA or PMRF, rely on the current research admission call and fellowship rules rather than the undergraduate fee schedule.
Before accepting an offer, request a written fee calculation for the relevant category and year that separates tuition, institute charges, hostel and mess, one-time deposits, seat-payment adjustments and any approved remission. A scholarship listing is evidence that a route exists, not a guarantee of award or a complete estimate of net cost. The official pages linked above should be revisited when the application cycle opens because notices, amounts, documents and deadlines are maintained by different offices and can change independently.
