Start with the kind of support you need
IIT Roorkee’s Senate Committee for Scholarships and Prizes (SCSP) acts as an information and coordination point for institute scholarships, awards and financial assistance. Its pages list several kinds of support, including tuition fee waiver, Merit Cum Means (MCM), James Thomason, donor-funded awards and National Scholarship Portal schemes. These are not interchangeable. A tuition waiver reduces a specified tuition charge under its eligibility rules; an MCM award combines a stipend with a tuition-related benefit under a separate merit-and-means process; a donor or government scholarship may have its own applicant group, award value and application route.
For 2026-27, the institute’s tuition-waiver page states full tuition waiver for gross annual family income below ₹1 lakh and two-thirds tuition waiver for income from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh for specified categories and JEE Advanced-admitted programmes. The rule is limited to normal programme duration and, for dual degrees, through year four. It is not an exemption from hostel, semester, deposits or mess charges. The application notice also identifies a past deadline of 11 September 2026 for first-year UG applicants. That date has passed as of 27 October 2026; it should not be used as the next deadline. Applicants must check a new notice for the next academic year.
MCM combines academic conditions with financial need
The institute’s MCM instructions for 2025-26 state that an eligible UG recipient receives ₹1,000 per month for 10 months in an academic year along with refund of the remaining tuition fee; M.Sc. recipients receive at least ₹1,000 per month for 10 months. The award is available for the normal programme duration and for dual-degree students only through year four, and the stated selection ceiling is up to 25% of actual class strength. The notice lists eligible programme routes and requires gross parental income not above ₹5 lakh, CGPA and YGPA above 7.0, cleared registered courses, and no penalty for unfair means or indiscipline. These are 2025-26 terms, not a guarantee of unchanged 2026-27 or 2027-28 terms.
MCM should not be confused with tuition remission alone. It can provide a monthly amount and a remaining-tuition refund for eligible recipients, whereas a tuition waiver is calculated against tuition by income band. Even if a student meets one scheme’s income condition, the academic, programme, category and application conditions still matter. Read the current instructions carefully: SCSP publishes notices and lists, and deadlines can close well before registration or the semester begins. If an older FAQ and a newer year-specific notice appear to differ, prioritize the current dated notice and ask SCSP about the particular cohort before budgeting an award.
Other institute, donor and government opportunities
The institute scholarship page lists James Thomason and the Dr. S. K. Goel and Mrs. Kusum Goel Scholarship alongside MCM. SCSP also posts announcements for donor-backed programmes and routes students to National Scholarship Portal schemes. Their terms vary: some are restricted by programme, year, category, income, gender, domicile, rank, academic progress or a separate application. For example, the current institute scholarship listing identifies James Thomason for specified undergraduate programmes admitted through JEE Advanced, while the details and continuation criteria should be read in its current instructions. Do not assume an old JEE rank threshold or stipend amount is current simply because a general information page remains online.
Government and private scholarships have their own administering authority and deadline. IIT Roorkee’s NSP page describes institutional and state/central verification before successful awards are disbursed through direct benefit transfer. A student should confirm whether an institute award can be held alongside another award and whether the same expense is covered twice; the relevant scheme rules govern this. Maintain copies of the application, income proofs, marksheets, category certificates and acknowledgement. Use the official SCSP announcement and linked form, rather than an unofficial intermediary or an account asking for payment outside the institute’s process.
Documents, deadlines and safe verification
The tuition-waiver page lists PAN and Aadhaar documents for parents or guardian, current assessment-year income tax return pages and a signed declaration. The SCSP FAQ explains that incomplete or incorrect documents can cause rejection and that a closed application window is not generally reopened by emailing documents, subject to exceptions in the applicable rules. MCM instructions similarly require current income and academic records. These document lists are scheme-specific: a student should use the newest checklist attached to the exact award rather than submit a generic bundle that omits a required item.
SCSP is the institute’s central scholarship contact; the official notice names [email protected] and states that scholarship payments are processed through the institute’s Accounts Section. Before responding to a payment request, confirm bank details through the official site or office. A scholarship announcement does not establish that a candidate has been selected; check the final or provisional beneficiary list and any correction procedure. Because the 2026-27 tuition-waiver deadline has passed and current awards can change, this page does not promise an open 2027 application, fixed funding amount or automatic renewal. Refresh the announcement page when the new session opens and compare each eligibility rule against your own programme and income documentation.
How to estimate the effect on your bill
For planning, first identify tuition separately from recurring charges. The IIT Roorkee first-year 2026-27 fee table lists tuition, semester charges, hostel and electricity, admission payment, refundable deposits and mess items on separate lines. Its total remains non-zero for a student receiving full tuition remission because remission applies to tuition, not to every expense. The published semester total for SC/ST/PwD and the lowest-income bracket is ₹55,550 in Autumn and ₹39,050 in Spring; these figures are specific to the listed new-entrant schedule and include non-tuition items. They are not a quote for every applicant or later year.
An MCM refund may also be subject to selection and processing; do not subtract a possible award from the registration amount until the institute confirms the award and timing. Budget using the fee bill first, then account for approved support when it is actually awarded. For international students, fee categories and scholarships may differ. If you are near an income threshold, use the institute’s definition of gross family income before tax deductions and include the parents/guardian specified in the current rules. SCSP can clarify eligibility documents, while Finance/Accounts can clarify the amount due. The 2027-28 fee schedule and scholarship terms were not yet published in the sources reviewed.
