What is open for 2027-28?
As of 5 November 2026, IIIT Bangalore has not published the general 2027-28 admission calendar on the official pages reviewed for this guide. The latest complete undergraduate and M.Tech schedules located are for 2026-27; their listed application deadlines have passed, even though some pages still show a generic “applications are open” banner. Treat the dates below as past-cycle evidence, not a live invitation or a promise that the same dates will recur.
There is one live exception: the institute’s research-admissions page says applications for Term 2 of academic year 2026-27 are open, with the online submission deadline on 9 November 2026. That is a January 2027 research intake, not the general 2027-28 undergraduate or taught-postgraduate cycle. Before paying any fee, confirm the programme and portal still accept applications. Check the relevant programme notice rather than relying on the institute-wide Admissions landing page, which mostly links to separate programme pages.
B.Tech and integrated M.Tech: one JEE-based application
For the latest undergraduate intake, the institute offered three B.Tech routes (CSE, ECE, and AI & Data Science) and two five-year integrated M.Tech routes (CSE and ECE). The 2026 notice used one common application for these five programmes; applicants listed preferences instead of submitting five separate programme applications. The official minimum requirement was Class 12 or equivalent with first-class results and Mathematics, plus a 2026 JEE score. The same page says selection is based on the candidate’s best 2026 All India Rank from JEE Main or JEE Advanced. Its minimum-eligibility paragraph separately says a valid JEE Main score is required. Because those statements are not fully aligned, an Advanced-only applicant should ask the admissions office for written clarification before relying on that route in a later cycle.
The 2026 call also considered candidates selected for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp or International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp, subject to the academic eligibility rule; the notice capped those seats at five across all programmes. Do not assume that exception continues unchanged for 2027.
The official page labels its prior-year table as 2025 closing ranks and lists best JEE rank cutoffs of 6,942 for B.Tech CSE, 8,432 for B.Tech AI&DS, 8,844 for B.Tech ECE, 7,357 for iM.Tech CSE, and 9,101 for iM.Tech ECE. These are historical best-rank figures, not a safe target or a 2027 cutoff. Rank movement depends on the applicant pool and allocation rounds. The 2026 page also records first-round cutoffs separately; compare a rank only with the same programme, year, exam basis, and round.
For a future cycle, first check the official B.Tech and integrated M.Tech admissions page for the eligibility notice and allocation policy. Then submit the common application through the institute’s admissions portal when the relevant-year link is live, place programme preferences in the requested order, and monitor each published offer round. The 2026 application deadline was 10 June 2026; the current 2027-28 date has not been announced.
M.Tech: match the GATE paper to the programme
The three course-based M.Tech routes have different eligibility and GATE-paper rules. In the latest 2026-27 notice, all required at least 65% in a four-year engineering bachelor’s degree, with final-year candidates eligible if they expected to graduate by July 2026. CSE accepted specified computing and related engineering branches and used GATE CS. ECE accepted computing, electronics, electrical, or instrumentation branches and used GATE EC or EE. AI&DS accepted a four-year engineering degree from any branch; specified M.Sc. applicants could also apply if they had a B.Sc. in Computer Science or a subject with Mathematics. AI&DS used GATE DSAI. The programme pages describe these as full-time, residential courses, so residence and programme workload are part of the decision, not an optional delivery mode.
IIIT-B says there is no fixed GATE cutoff. Its 2025 offers reached scores of 635 for CSE, 522 for ECE, and 596 for AI&DS, but these are historical offer limits rather than qualifying marks. A candidate near one of those values should not infer either admission or rejection; the institute says the 2026 cutoff varies with applications. Use the branch eligibility and paper code first, then compare current offer lists only for the same paper and programme.
The institute’s 2026-27 M.Tech pages list 19 March 2026 as the opening date and 4 May 2026 as the application deadline, followed by offer lists and later online rounds. The official page now marks 2026-27 applications closed; its dated timeline lists 19 March 2026 as the opening date and 4 May 2026 as the deadline. No 2027-28 M.Tech deadline was visible in the pages reviewed. Start with the individual CSE admissions page, ECE admissions page, or AI & DS admissions page; do not substitute one GATE paper for another.
Research degrees: Term 2 applications close 9 November
The live Term 2 2026-27 call covers Ph.D., Integrated Ph.D., and M.S. by Research. The published research-domain list includes Computer Science and Software Engineering, Data Science and AI, Digital Humanities and Societal Systems, Networking/Communications/Signal Processing, VLSI and Embedded Systems, Mathematics, and Physics. For this Term 2 call, the page says Digital Humanities and Societal Systems is not inviting applications. Mathematics and Physics have Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. openings only; the M.S. by Research options exclude those two domains. Confirm the exact domain and programme pairing in the call before applying.
The institute lists the M.S. by Research as full-time, while Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. offer full-time and part-time registration. Minimum durations are two years for M.S. by Research, three years for Ph.D., and four years for Integrated Ph.D. General entry rules differ: M.S. by Research requires a four-year engineering bachelor’s degree and a good academic record; Integrated Ph.D. requires a relevant four-year engineering or science degree, normally at least 75%, and a relevant GATE score; Ph.D. requires a master’s degree or equivalent and a good academic and technical record. The research-domain rules add requirements, so these general summaries do not replace the domain-specific section.
Selection may use national exam scores, a domain-specific written test, and an interview. The institute says a strong GATE score can exempt some applicants from its written test in specified domains; this is not a blanket waiver across all research areas. For example, VLSI and Embedded Systems describes a written exam and interview, with GATE desirable but not mandatory, while the Data Science domain identifies preferred GATE papers. Check the particular domain’s instruction and syllabus.
The call says the portal opened 9 October and online applications close 9 November 2026. It schedules notifications to shortlisted applicants from 13 November, tests/interviews from 23-27 November, admission notifications on 8 December, acceptance-fee payment by 24 December, and joining from 4 January 2027. The non-refundable application charge shown is ₹1,000. There is a date-label inconsistency: the page calls the call Term 2 of 2026-27 but its class-start row labels the term 2025-26. Verify that row and all current deadlines on the research admissions page and application portal before submitting.
Digital Society and product-design routes need their own current call
The institute also lists an M.Sc. in Digital Society and a PG Diploma in Digital Product Design and Management (PGD-DPDM). They are distinct from the GATE-based M.Tech routes. The M.Sc. programme page outlines four semesters of interdisciplinary study, ending with a thesis or internship, but the pages reviewed did not provide a current 2026-27 or 2027-28 admission schedule and eligibility notice for that taught programme. Do not reuse the M.S. by Research criteria for the M.Sc. Digital Society degree.
The official PGD-DPDM page is dated to a July 2025 cohort. It states a first-class undergraduate degree of at least three years in any discipline and says CAT 2024 or CEED 2025 scores could exempt an applicant from the written test in that selection process. Those test years and exemptions are historical, not current advice for a future batch. The page does not establish a 2027 intake. Check the programme page for a new dated call or write to the listed admissions contact before treating it as open. Completion of PGD-DPDM only makes a student eligible for consideration for direct M.S. by Research admission; an internal committee assesses suitability, so progression is not automatic.
A practical sequence for applicants
- Identify the exact course and entry level: Class 12 applicants use the B.Tech/iM.Tech route; engineering graduates compare M.Tech CSE, ECE, and AI&DS eligibility and GATE papers; research applicants choose a domain and degree registration mode.
- Read the current-year programme notice and its eligibility section. Recheck examination year, subject code, degree branch, minimum marks, and any written-test or interview requirement. Historical cutoffs help with context but do not replace eligibility or an offer list.
- Use the application portal named in that notice. The institute pages reviewed do not publish a single document checklist that safely covers every programme, so follow the programme portal’s own requirements rather than assuming one list applies to all.
- After applying, monitor the programme-specific page and registered email for shortlisting, written-test or interview instructions, offer lists, acceptance-fee deadlines, and joining information. If a page shows a generic “open” label next to dates that have already passed, rely on the dated notice and confirm with the admissions office.
For 2027-28 applicants, the immediate step is to save the official programme pages and check them for a dated call before preparing around a past deadline or exam code. The only current near-term deadline established in this review is the research Term 2 application closing on 9 November 2026.
