BUMS eligibility: science, marks, language and NEET conditions
BUMS eligibility is a set of conditions that must be checked together. For the ordinary direct-entry route, the applicant needs the prescribed 10+2 science subjects and category-specific marks, an acceptable Urdu/Arabic/Persian language route, the minimum age, and qualification in the entrance examination required for the admission cycle. Meeting one condition does not replace another, and an entrance percentile is not the same as the qualifying-examination marks requirement. The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) Minimum Standards of Undergraduate Unani Education Regulations, 2022 set the course-specific educational conditions; the NEET bulletin and current counselling authority notices supply the cycle-specific entrance and admission instructions. (NCISM Minimum Standards of Undergraduate Unani Education Regulations, 2022; NEET (UG)-2026 Information Bulletin, Chapter 9)
The 10+2 science requirement
The regulation requires a recognised 10+2 examination or an equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Its minimum combined percentage in these subjects is 50% for General candidates and 40% for candidates in the listed SC, ST and OBC categories. It also specifies a 45% threshold for General-category persons with specified disability and 40% for the listed reserved-category candidates with specified disability. These are BUMS regulatory thresholds, not a prediction of the marks needed to secure a seat. Applicants should read the exact definitions, documentation and any applicable amendments in the current official bulletin and counselling rules rather than relying on a coaching summary. (NCISM regulation, Regulation 4)
The subject combination and aggregate percentage are separate checks. A candidate should confirm that the qualifying board certificate records the required subjects and that the percentage is calculated on the basis accepted by the applicable admission authority. If a board uses grades, an improvement examination, supplementary subjects or a different equivalent qualification, the candidate should obtain the authority’s current conversion or equivalence instruction. This guide does not infer equivalence for a particular board or certificate.
Urdu, Arabic or Persian is a separate condition
BUMS has a language requirement that applicants should check before making a college list. NCISM’s direct-entry rules specify Urdu, Arabic or Persian as a subject in Class 10 or Class 12. The regulation provides a defined alternative for a candidate who has not studied one of those languages at the stated school level: the candidate must study Urdu together with Arabic and Mantiq wa Falsafa (logic and philosophy) during the first professional session. This is a course-specific bridge, not a general waiver of language eligibility. (NCISM regulation, Regulation 4)
The 2026 NEET bulletin also describes the language condition for BUMS admission and refers to the first-professional study route where the school language requirement is not met. Candidates should compare their mark sheets with the exact current bulletin wording and ask the admitting university or counselling authority how the alternative is documented. Do not assume that an unrelated language elective, informal language knowledge or a certificate automatically satisfies the formal rule. (NEET (UG)-2026 Information Bulletin, Chapter 9)
This requirement also has a practical study consequence. The regulation’s first-professional curriculum includes Urdu, Arabic, logic and philosophy alongside anatomy, physiology and the principles of Unani medicine. A student should ask the institution how it delivers the additional language pathway, what attendance and assessments apply, and how it supports students who are new to the terminology. The national rule describes the required study; it does not establish the quality or local timetable of a particular college.
Age and entrance examination
For the ordinary BUMS route, NCISM sets a minimum age of 17 years by 31 December of the year of admission. The candidate should confirm the accepted date-of-birth evidence and any current bulletin wording before registration. This is not a maximum-age statement. The regulation also distinguishes the regular BUMS admission route from Pre-Tib, so a rule or exception belonging to another pathway should not be applied to the standard route. (NCISM regulation, Regulation 4)
For the 2026 examination cycle, the NEET (UG)-2026 bulletin includes BUMS among the undergraduate ASU&H courses for which NEET qualification is required. The bulletin states the relevant qualifying-percentile rules by category; these govern eligibility to participate and differ from the 10+2 PCB percentage thresholds. A candidate who meets the school marks condition still needs the required NEET result, while a NEET-qualified candidate must also meet the subject, language, age and document conditions. The 2026 examination rule is cycle-dated; use the next official bulletin for a later application year rather than projecting this rule or its dates forward. (NEET (UG)-2026 Information Bulletin, Chapter 9)
Do not confuse direct BUMS with Pre-Tib
The NCISM regulation separately describes a one-year Pre-Tib programme for candidates with specified Oriental qualifications. This is a narrowly defined pathway with its own conditions and institutional context; it is not a general alternative for anyone missing PCB, language eligibility or NEET. Applicants considering it should check the exact qualification list, recognition and current availability directly with NCISM and the institution. The ordinary direct-entry BUMS requirements should not be blended with this separate route. (NCISM regulation, Regulations 4-5)
Eligibility does not guarantee a seat
An eligible candidate still has to follow the correct counselling process for the seat. AACCC’s 2026-27 page describes counselling for specified All India Quota streams in participating Government and Government-aided institutions, Deemed Universities, Central Universities and National Institutes. State and Union Territory authorities administer other seat categories under the applicable rules. The candidate must check the current seat matrix, category, quota and reporting instructions for the exact college. A prior-year cutoff, participation list or college advertisement is not evidence of current permission or an available seat. (AACCC UG Counseling; NEET (UG)-2026 Information Bulletin)
Before applying, assemble the Class 10 and 12 certificates and mark sheets, proof of the language subject or the authority’s accepted alternative documentation, age proof, NEET score and category or disability records where relevant. Confirm document formats and verification deadlines from the current counselling bulletin; do not assume that a scanned document or certificate used in a previous cycle will be accepted unchanged. If eligibility depends on an equivalent qualification or a category-specific interpretation, seek a written answer from the responsible authority before choice filling.
The evidence reviewed here includes the 2022 NCISM regulation and the 2026 NEET bulletin, with AACCC’s 2026-27 counselling scope. It does not establish any applicant’s individual eligibility or guarantee admission. Rules and notices can change, and each state authority may publish additional procedural requirements.
