BUMS fees: how to compare the cost of the 5.5-year course
There is no single official BUMS fee that applies to every college. Tuition and compulsory charges depend on the institution, ownership, state rules, seat category, academic year and student services. The course-level public record for BUMS contains legacy aggregate fee values, but those are not a dated official schedule and do not identify a campus, quota, year, annual basis or total-cost calculation. They should not be presented as a current fee quote. Applicants need the current written schedule from the selected college and, where applicable, the counselling authority. (NCISM Minimum Standards of Undergraduate Unani Education Regulations, 2022; AACCC UG Counseling)
Start with the correct fee document
Ask for a fee notice or prospectus that names the academic year, BUMS programme, campus, seat quota and candidate category. Where the amount is set by a state fee committee or court, use the current order and check its applicability to that institution and intake. For a private or deemed institution, request a signed itemised schedule and compare it with the counselling portal. A general course page, old brochure or fee aggregator may combine different years or seats and cannot confirm what a specific student must pay.
The official counselling process may also collect registration charges or a refundable security deposit. These payments are distinct from tuition and should be tracked separately. The AACCC 2026-27 information-bulletin index listed a current bulletin, but the linked PDF could not be retrieved during this research. This page therefore does not quote AACCC registration, security or refund amounts. Applicants should read the current bulletin and its withdrawal and forfeiture rules before paying. Separate annual, one-time and optional charges
An itemised schedule should distinguish recurring tuition from admission, registration, university examination, laboratory, library, caution deposit, hostel, mess, transport and other charges. Confirm which items are compulsory, which are refundable, and when each is due. Hostel and mess costs can materially change the budget but are not necessarily included in a quoted tuition figure. If the institution gives a combined amount, ask for its components in writing so that offers can be compared on the same basis.
Also check whether a quoted amount applies to the entire course, one academic year, one professional phase or only the first instalment. BUMS is structured as three 18-month professional phases and a 12-month compulsory internship, for a total of 5.5 years. Annual tuition should not simply be multiplied by 5.5 unless the college confirms that the charge recurs at that rate and explains how the internship year is billed. Ask about increases for later batches or years; do not treat a current first-year circular as a guaranteed fee for the whole programme. (NCISM regulation, Regulations 5 and 8)
Compare like with like
When building a shortlist, make a row for each exact institution and seat type. Record the source URL, publication date, session, annual tuition, one-time fees, hostel and mess, deposits, examination costs, payment deadlines and refund conditions. Keep currency in rupees and avoid converting a multiyear total into an annual rate unless the source provides enough detail to reproduce the calculation. If a source reports a range, retain the conditions that explain the lower and upper amounts rather than choosing the lower number as the expected price.
For example, a quoted “first-year total” may combine admission fees and annual tuition but exclude hostel, while another college may show tuition alone. Those figures cannot be compared directly. Reconcile the components first, then calculate a comparable first-year budget. For a full-course estimate, use each year’s stated charges or clearly mark any assumption about fee stability. Add a contingency for items the official schedule leaves unresolved, but label it as the applicant’s budget provision rather than a reported institutional charge.
Scholarships and financial support
Scholarship eligibility is not a course-wide guarantee. It can depend on the state, household income, category, domicile, institution, attendance and the scheme’s current rules. Check government scholarship portals and the college financial-aid office for the applicable year. Confirm whether the scheme pays the student or institution, covers tuition or living expenses, and requires renewal each year. Do not subtract a possible scholarship from the published fee unless the applicant has confirmed eligibility and award conditions.
Ask the college whether payment instalments are available and whether any concession is reflected in the written schedule. A verbal assurance is difficult to compare or rely on later. Keep receipts, the signed admission letter, counselling allotment and any fee revision notice. If an amount differs between the portal and college demand, request clarification from the counselling authority before making an additional payment.
Budget beyond tuition
The course includes substantial practical and clinical learning and a required internship. Students may need to budget for books, stationery, equipment specified by the institution, travel to clinical postings, meals and accommodation. The particular cost depends on location and campus arrangements; this research did not establish a universal BUMS amount for these items. Ask current students and the institution for a dated estimate, while distinguishing personal estimates from official charges.
The internship year needs special attention. Ask whether students pay tuition or other compulsory fees during the internship, whether accommodation is available, and whether any stipend is governed by a current government order or institutional policy. Do not assume a stipend will offset costs: the NCISM course regulation establishes the internship requirement but does not guarantee a specific payment across all BUMS colleges. Get the current policy for the relevant campus and batch in writing. (NCISM regulation, Regulation 8)
A practical fee-check sequence
- Identify the exact college, campus, academic year, quota and counselling authority.
- Obtain the dated fee circular or applicable state fee order and confirm it covers BUMS.
- Separate tuition, one-time charges, deposits, hostel, mess and examination costs.
- Check deadlines, instalments, refund, resignation and forfeiture conditions in the current counselling bulletin.
- Ask how later professional years and the internship year are billed.
- Save the written schedule and payment receipts, and recheck for official revisions before each instalment.
No official institution-specific fee schedule was available in the course-level evidence used for this article. The correct next step is to obtain one for the exact college and seat, not to infer a national average from unrelated campus data or legacy aggregates. Fees can change by year and category, so applicants should confirm the latest applicable notices before choice filling and again before paying the institution.
