No single BDS fee applies nationwide
BDS costs vary by state, institution, seat category, university and admission year. A published figure may mean annual tuition, one semester, the first instalment, total programme fee or refundable deposit. These bases cannot be compared without clarification. A database average or search result is not the payable amount for a specific seat.
The official MCODS Manipal BDS page lists a total programme fee for 2026 admissions of ₹22,22,000 for General category and USD 50,400 for NRI/Foreign candidates. It says the fee structure for 2027 admissions will be updated later. These figures apply to one named programme and cycle, not to other colleges or a future intake. The page does not establish whether hostel, food, transport, instruments and every separately billed charge are included. Obtain a full written schedule for the exact seat category.
Build a complete cost estimate
Ask the institution to itemise tuition, university charges, examination fees, refundable deposits, dental instruments and materials, hostel, meals, transport, insurance and recurring clinical charges. For each item, record whether it is annual, per-semester, one-time or full-course. Ask whether later-year fees increase. Do not multiply first-year tuition by five unless the college confirms the later amounts and the total period covered.
Use a comparison sheet with college and campus, seat quota/category, academic year, fee basis, mandatory extras, deposit refund terms, hostel assumptions, payment dates and source date. If one college publishes five-year total and another publishes annual tuition, request compatible data instead of ranking the raw figures. Keep USD quotations in their original currency. A personal INR conversion should carry a dated exchange rate and must not be described as the institution's quoted fee.
Seat category and counselling payments
Government, state-quota, management, deemed and NRI/foreign seats may have different eligibility and fee schedules. Confirm the category in the official seat matrix and match it to the institution's fee notice. A counselling security deposit can be held by a different authority from tuition and can follow separate refund rules. Record who receives each payment and the conditions for refund or forfeiture.
Read the current MCC or state counselling bulletin for registration, allotment, payment and reporting. Do not assume fee terms from a prior year or earlier round remain unchanged. Never pay an unofficial intermediary to secure an allotment. Keep official receipts and written fee terms.
Scholarships, refund and living costs
Scholarship eligibility can depend on category, marks, application deadlines, renewal criteria and funding. Confirm what it covers, whether it is automatic or competitive and whether first-year payment is due before award. Until written approval is issued, plan without the scholarship. Read refund terms for withdrawal, non-reporting or changes between rounds. A refundable caution deposit does not make tuition refundable.
BDS has four academic years plus a compulsory internship year in the national framework. Budget the actual full period, including living costs, travel to clinical postings, books, equipment and instrument replacement. Confirm internship stipend and timing rather than assuming it offsets tuition. If a college will not provide a written schedule or gives a verbal answer inconsistent with its notice, pause and verify with its official admissions office before paying.
Avoid misleading comparisons
Fee research often mixes the first installment with the full course cost. It may also combine categories that are not open to the same candidates. Do not calculate an “average BDS fee” from a handful of college pages unless the sample, year, category, fee period and inclusions are compatible. A careful article or personal comparison sheet should state its evidence limits instead of implying that the named example represents the market.
At the time of research, the MAHE page explicitly states that its 2027 fee information is forthcoming. That is a useful warning: a page that still displays a 2026 amount does not establish the next cycle's price. Revisit the official fee page and counselling documents when applying. Preserve a downloaded copy of the applicable notice, and check whether a newer document has superseded it. If the institution quotes a total programme fee, ask if it covers the internship year and what non-tuition costs remain. If the fee is installment-based, calculate payment timing as well as sum.
Plan for interruption and contingencies
A five-year course plan should include more than five years of tuition. Examination reappearances, delayed progression or an incomplete internship can extend the period, while accommodation and travel continue to cost money. The institution's academic rules determine progression and repeat charges. Ask about the fee consequence of repeating a year, an examination or an internship posting, and whether hostel fees continue during a delay. Do not budget on the assumption that every student completes on the shortest nominal schedule.
Compare the cost with family cash flow, scholarships that have been confirmed, education-loan terms and an emergency buffer. Keep refundable deposits separate from expenses, since refunds may take time or have deductions. A financing decision should use the written offer and full fee schedule, not an approximate aggregate in a database or a verbal promise from an intermediary.
