First check what “specialisation” means
An MBA-HR may be a dedicated programme with HR courses throughout, while a general MBA may offer HR as one elective concentration. Some programmes award an MBA-HR degree only after specified credits and internship; others use a specialisation code in an ODL MBA. Check the final award title, required credits and whether you can switch specialisation after enrolment. IGNOU’s prospectus says students choosing a specialised MBA programme cannot change specialisation; XIM describes a dedicated MBA-HRM degree with a set core and elective structure.
Compare the main HR areas
Talent acquisition and workforce planning covers staffing needs, sourcing, selection and hiring. Learning and development looks at needs analysis, programme design and evaluating learning. Compensation and total rewards involves pay structures, benefits, performance-linked rewards and internal equity. Employee and industrial relations examines workplace policy, labour law, negotiation and dispute processes. Organisational behaviour and development explores teams, leadership, culture and change. People analytics and HR systems uses workforce data and technology to support decisions.
These areas appear in different forms in the official curricula reviewed. IIM Ranchi’s 2026-28 sequence includes recruitment, learning, performance, total rewards, industrial relations and compulsory People Analytics. XIM lists electives such as talent management, competency mapping, compensation and reward, international HR, diversity and inclusion, HR systems and labour-law applications. DU’s MBA-HRD lists HR information systems, negotiations, compensation and HR analytics. The menu and whether a course runs are institution- and cohort-specific.
Choose by the work and evidence you want
Pick electives based on target work rather than trend labels. If you want analytical roles, inspect statistics, data methods, HRIS and project requirements. If you prefer employee relations, compare labour law, industrial relations and negotiation courses. For talent and learning roles, look for practical hiring, assessment, training design and evaluation. Ask whether electives are scheduled for the cohort, how enrolment is allocated and whether prerequisites apply.
An elective is not a professional licence or a guarantee of job eligibility. Confirm employer requirements and seek practical projects or internships that show the relevant capability. Compare the broader business core as well: HR managers need to understand finance, operations and strategy, not only the chosen HR theme.
Verify the current elective list
XIM states that electives start in the second year and that areas announce the offerings each year; its curriculum notes that courses may be added or removed. Treat published lists as examples until the department confirms the options for your intake. Ask for the current term plan and selection rules before using a specialisation list to decide between offers.
