UGC-NET eligibility depends on your degree route
For UGC-NET December 2026, NTA lists a Master’s degree or equivalent and a separate four-year/eight-semester bachelor’s route. Check the route you actually meet before selecting a NET subject or result category. These are eligibility rules for that cycle, not a guarantee of appointment or PhD admission. NTA administers the test for UGC; the exam portal is ugcnet.nta.nic.in. The catalogue’s “CBSE UGC NET” label is historical: CBSE ran the test through 2018 and NTA has run it since December 2018.
Route A: Master’s degree or equivalent
The December 2026 bulletin sets a minimum aggregate of 55%, without rounding off, for General/Unreserved and General-EWS applicants in a Master’s degree or equivalent from a UGC-recognised university or institution. The minimum is 50% for OBC-NCL candidates on the Central List, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender applicants. A state OBC listing alone does not establish OBC-NCL status for this central test; the bulletin directs candidates to the Central List.
Applicants who are pursuing the qualifying Master’s programme, have taken the final examination while awaiting results, or have a delayed qualifying examination may apply provisionally. The completion deadline depends on the result category: for JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility, the required Master’s qualification and marks must be completed within two years after the NET result; a candidate qualifying in the PhD-only category has one year. Save proof of the final degree and marks because provisional application does not waive the completion condition.
The bulletin also gives a narrow 5-percentage-point relaxation for PhD degree holders whose Master’s-level examination was completed by 19 September 1991. It advises applicants to appear in the subject of their postgraduate degree. If the exact postgraduate subject is absent from the NET list, a related subject may be selected. Use the official annexures to check subject codes and postgraduate-course mapping; do not infer equivalence from a similar-sounding subject name.
Route B: four-year bachelor’s programme
Candidates who have passed a four-year or eight-semester bachelor’s programme need at least 75% aggregate or the equivalent grade. A 5 percentage-point relaxation may apply to the categories specified in the bulletin, including SC/ST, OBC-NCL, differently abled, EWS and other categories under UGC decisions. The degree must meet the UGC’s stated programme criteria; this is not the same as the usual Master’s route.
This route has an important limit: it can qualify a candidate for JRF and PhD admission, but not Assistant Professor eligibility. The candidate may select the NET subject intended for PhD admission irrespective of the bachelor’s discipline. That flexibility does not grant admission to a specific PhD programme. The university or institution still applies its subject fit, minimum qualifications, interview or other admission rules.
Age, nationality and category
The December 2026 bulletin frames UGC-NET as determining eligibility for Indian nationals. For JRF, the upper age limit is 30 years as of 1 December 2026. It lists relaxations of up to five years for women and specified categories, research experience in a related subject with an acceptable certificate, up to three years for an LL.M. degree, and qualifying armed-forces service. The bulletin caps total age relaxation under the listed grounds at five years. These are cycle-bound JRF rules; check the exact eligibility clause for the cycle you apply to.
There is no upper age limit in the December 2026 bulletin for candidates applying for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD-only eligibility. That does not remove the age, qualification or other conditions that a university may set for its own PhD intake or for a particular appointment.
Reservation and fee treatment are not interchangeable. Category status for the examination follows the bulletin and applicable Government of India rules; for OBC-NCL, the bulletin refers to the Central List. A Third Gender applicant receives the stated relaxations for fee, age and eligibility. PwD/PwBD applicants should check the bulletin’s accepted disability documentation and examination accommodations. Keep the certificate valid in the format and time period specified for the cycle. The fact that an applicant meets a marks threshold does not by itself settle category documentation or programme eligibility.
A quick self-check
- Identify the qualifying degree: Master’s/equivalent, or a completed four-year/eight-semester bachelor’s programme.
- Compare your aggregate marks with the route-specific threshold and your category. Do not round a mark upward when the bulletin says “without rounding off.”
- If you are awaiting a result, check the provisional-admission condition and the separate one-year or two-year completion deadline tied to the result category.
- Match your postgraduate subject to the official NET subject list. If it is missing, use the bulletin’s related-subject provision and confirm the choice against the official list.
- If seeking JRF, calculate age against the bulletin’s cycle reference date and check each relaxation ground and proof requirement. Assistant Professor and PhD-only routes have no upper age limit in this cycle’s bulletin.
- Read the relevant university’s recruitment notice or PhD prospectus before relying on NET qualification for a job or seat.
UGC-NET eligibility establishes a test-based qualification category. Category 1 combines JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility and can support PhD admission; Category 2 supports Assistant Professor and PhD admission but not JRF; Category 3 supports PhD admission only. A qualifying result is not an appointment, a fellowship placement or an automatic admission offer. For Category 2 and 3 PhD use, the December 2026 bulletin gives a one-year validity from result declaration and a 70% NET plus 30% interview/viva assessment by the concerned institution. Always check the current prospectus for the institution-specific process.
These details describe the December 2026 bulletin. No later-cycle marks threshold, age reference date, category document rule or degree-route change is inferred here. Use the latest NTA bulletin and notices before applying.
