The GRE is a family of graduate-level assessments administered by ETS. Before booking, decide whether a programme asks for the GRE General Test, a GRE Subject Test, either one, or no GRE score. These are distinct products with different purposes, formats, fees, schedules and score scales. Neither a GRE score nor an ETS score-recipient listing is an admission offer or a universal measure of eligibility.
The General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. ETS describes these skills as not tied to a particular field of study. Graduate, business and law programmes may consider the General Test, but each department sets its own current policy. The Subject Tests cover Mathematics, Physics and Psychology. They provide evidence of knowledge in that discipline for programmes that choose to require or recommend it. A Subject Test is not an extra compulsory paper for every General Test candidate, and the General Test does not substitute automatically for a discipline test. Start with the exact course, department and intake page, then record the test type and policy status it names.
GRE acceptance can mean required, recommended, optional, or accepted as one part of an application. Those labels matter. A programme that accepts score reports may not require them; a university-wide page may differ from a department's rule. Check the programme's application year and ask the department if its pages conflict. ETS's approved recipient list helps identify institutions and sponsors that can receive General scores. It does not establish that a specific degree currently uses GRE, accepts a Subject Test, sets no minimum, or accepts every mode.
Since 22 September 2023, the General Test takes about 1 hour 58 minutes. It has one 30-minute Analyze an Issue writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections. Verbal contains 12 questions in 18 minutes followed by 15 in 23 minutes. Quantitative Reasoning contains 12 in 21 minutes and 15 in 26 minutes. Verbal and Quant sections adapt at the section level: performance in the first section affects the difficulty of the second. Within a section, candidates can move between questions, review answers and change responses. This is distinct from a question-by-question adaptive test.
Descriptions of a roughly 3 hour 45 minute General Test with two essays, longer 20-question sections or an unscored/research section refer to the pre-22 September 2023 format. Do not use those descriptions to plan a current sitting. Older preparation books may still teach useful underlying skills, but their test structure, timing and practice sets may be obsolete.
General appointments are rolling rather than tied to one annual exam day. ETS offers test-centre appointments and at-home testing where the candidate's location, account and technical conditions allow it. Check available dates in the ETS account before committing to a university deadline. GRE Subject Tests instead use selected windows. For the 2026-27 testing year, ETS lists windows on 14-27 September 2026, 19 October-1 November 2026 and 19 April-2 May 2027. Their corresponding score release dates are 5 October 2026, 9 November 2026 and 10 May 2027. These dates apply to Subject testing, not General appointments or university application deadlines.
General Verbal and Quantitative scores range from 130 to 170 in one-point increments; Analytical Writing ranges from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. Subject totals use a 200-990 scale in ten-point increments, although each subject occupies only part of the scale. ETS says General results usually appear in the account 8-10 days after the test. General and Subject results are reportable for five years from the test date. A department may apply a shorter score-age rule or a separate minimum, so ETS validity does not settle programme eligibility.
GRE does not have a universal pass mark, admissions cutoff, central counselling process or guaranteed-college list. The decision belongs to each programme and intake. If the next intake policy has not been published, use the latest official programme page as dated context, contact the department for planning and avoid treating last year's rule as confirmed for the next cycle.
Sources and scope. This guide uses ETS's current General and Subject descriptions, score, schedule and recipient pages accessed 28 October 2026. Dynamic fees and programme-level requirements must be checked again at checkout and on the target programme page.
General Test scores report Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning separately on 130-170 scales, in one-point steps. Analytical Writing is reported from 0 to 6 in half-point steps. A reader should not collapse these into one total or compare a writing score with a verbal score. An institution may set a minimum for one section, an overall expectation, or no GRE threshold at all. The exact programme requirement controls. ETS reports percentiles alongside scores, but a percentile is a comparison with a reference group, not the probability of admission.
Subject Test totals use a 200-990 scale in ten-point increments. A subject does not occupy every possible point on that scale, and the number cannot be read as a percentage correct. Physics and Psychology score reports also include percent-correct subscores for tests beginning September 2023. Earlier reports used a 20-99 subscore scale; ETS states that percentage subscores from different editions are not equated. Avoid ranking candidates across editions using a raw subscore comparison. Mathematics is also a distinct test; do not transfer Physics or Psychology subscore rules to it without checking its current report description.
ETS generally makes General results available in the account 8-10 days after the test. Subject Test results are released on the scheduled dates for their window. Scores are reportable for five years from the test date. Reportability describes ETS's score delivery window. It does not compel a department to accept an older result: a programme can impose a shorter validity period, require an official report, specify a delivery method or stop considering the GRE entirely. ScoreSelect lets candidates choose which eligible GRE test scores to send under ETS rules; confirm the exact choices and any additional score-report fee in the account before ordering. A programme's superscoring policy is separate from ETS score delivery.
Candidates create or review an ETS account, choose General or a specific Subject Test, select an available location or permitted at-home appointment, provide payment and designate any score recipients. The account is where appointments and scores are managed. Enter the name so it matches the identification exactly, including the name order and spelling shown on the document. Read the location-specific ID rules in the account; a passport example on a general page is not a guarantee that any document is accepted everywhere.
At-home GRE availability depends on region, the address associated with the account and the candidate meeting current equipment, room and identity-verification requirements. ETS India describes human-proctored at-home tests and additional identity verification steps. Check the latest checklist before relying on home delivery: a computer, operating system, camera, microphone, stable connection and private room may all matter. If the setup cannot meet the rules, choose a centre appointment instead. Centre and at-home scores are still governed by the receiving programme's mode policy.
Registration and change policies are variant-specific. ETS's schedule page states that General Test retakes must be separated by at least 21 days and are limited to five within a rolling 12-month period. Subject Test retakes must be separated by at least 14 days. If requesting disability-related testing accommodations, submit the request and supporting documents before booking and wait for instructions on how the approved arrangement affects scheduling. Candidates should review cancellation and rescheduling terms at the time of booking because charges and deadlines can change.
Fees vary by test and may change. ETS updated its General registration fees effective 1 August 2026. The official India-locale fee page's indexed text displayed USD 249 / ₹25,522 for the General Test, but the page opened for this research displayed USD only and directed India candidates to ETS India. Treat ₹25,522 as a dated official search-index observation, not a guaranteed checkout amount. Verify the final price in the account before payment. The published Subject Test schedule states a worldwide fee of USD 199 for registrations on or after 1 August 2026; an India-specific Subject fee was not verified in this source pass. Do not reuse the General India figure for a Subject Test or treat optional services, additional reports, rescheduling or cancellation as included without checking the fee page.
Create a row for each target degree with its exact GRE variant, requirement status, total or section score rule, test mode, score-age rule, recipient codes and score-receipt deadline. Keep academic requirements and language tests in separate columns. If one programme wants a Subject Test while another wants only General, verify whether the planned dates and reporting route can meet both deadlines. If policies are not published, mark the application-year rule unresolved and ask the department. Do not assume an ETS recipient entry is a course-level policy.
Use the test format to choose preparation resources. ETS POWERPREP offers free online General practice tests and paid options. Check that a book or mock test reflects the shortened format introduced on 22 September 2023. A resource built around two essays and long 20-question sections may train useful underlying reasoning but will misrepresent the current experience. For Subject preparation, use the current guide for Mathematics, Physics or Psychology and a matching official practice resource when available. A candidate can then set practice priorities from the programme's stated score requirements and current test content, rather than a generic promise of a target score.
GRE is not an admission authority. It does not decide which applicant is eligible for every graduate programme, publish one universal qualifying cutoff, allocate seats or run central counselling. Institutions and departments decide whether to require a score and how it fits with transcripts, recommendations, statements, interviews, portfolios or other tests. A reported score is one piece of evidence. Confirm the current rule directly with each target programme and treat any past-cycle policy or score expectation as historical until that department publishes the next intake's instructions.
The useful rule is simple: separate ETS scheduling and score reporting from each department’s admissions decision, then verify both for the same intake.

GRE General Test scores: Verbal Reasoning 130-170 and Quantitative Reasoning 130-170 in one-point increments; Analytical Writing 0-6 in half-point increments. GRE Subject Test totals use a 200-990 scale in ten-point increments, but actual ranges vary by test and disciplines are not directly comparable. ETS score reports are available for five years from the test date; programs may set a different recency rule.
