IISER IAT counselling: preferences, offers, SAF and withdrawal
IISER counselling is the online programme-preference and seat-allocation process that follows the IAT result. A valid exam application or rank does not automatically create an admission offer. The latest detailed official process found is for IAT 2026; all dates, fees and round rules below are labelled to that completed cycle. Check a new official brochure and portal before following any procedure in another year.
How the 2026 preference stage worked
The 2026 admission page said eligible candidates would submit their IISER academic-programme preferences after the result, not when first applying for the exam. The listed preference-registration window was 2 July at 5 pm through 9 July 2026 at 5 pm IST. The counselling process was online, and candidates checked offers by signing into their application portal.
Before ordering choices, compare the actual programme and campus. The seven IISERs offered a five-year BS-MS, while the 2026 brochure also listed specified four-year BS or B.Tech routes at some campuses and additional programme options at Kolkata and Mohali. Subject eligibility may differ; for four named programmes the 2026 rules required Class XII Mathematics. A preference is meaningful only if you meet the programme conditions and would accept that course if offered.
Put choices in your genuine order of preference. Do not list a programme first only because an old cutoff appears attainable, and do not omit an option solely because a prior year’s closing rank looks difficult. Allocation considers the candidate’s rank, category, submitted preference order and seat availability in that round. The 2026 page warned that if seats in the programmes a candidate listed were filled, the candidate might not be considered further even without a prior offer. A short list can therefore close off later possibilities; list only programmes you would consider, but include the full set you might accept.
Offers and response choices
Monitor the portal through each announced round. An offer is provisional until the candidate reports to the allotted institute and provides the required original documents. The candidate must respond within the portal’s specified time. The 2026 process described options including accepting and freezing a seat or accepting and floating for consideration at a higher preference. These are distinct decisions; read the current instructions carefully before selecting one.
Under the 2026 float explanation, if a higher-preference programme was later offered, the previously allotted seat would stand cancelled. A candidate should therefore order preferences honestly and understand what can change after choosing float. Do not treat “accept and float” as holding two seats simultaneously. If you reject an offer or take no action before the deadline, the 2026 process said you would not be able to participate in subsequent counselling rounds. The exact option labels and conditions for a later cycle must be checked in its own notice.
The official schedule listed nine tentative offer rounds from 24 July through 11 September 2026, with round-specific response and payment windows. Some dates opened at noon and most stated a 5 pm IST deadline. A date-only reminder can be unsafe: note the exact time, time zone and action required from the offer page. If a programme is marked closed after a round, the official portal’s update controls; do not rely on older spreadsheets or assume every programme remains open through Round 9.
Seat Acceptance Fee is separate from the application fee
In 2026, candidates paid a Seat Acceptance Fee only after an admission offer. The listed amount was ₹35,000 for General/EWS/OBC/OBC-NCL/PwD/KM groups, including ₹10,000 as a non-refundable administrative fee. The SC/ST amount was ₹17,500, including ₹5,000 non-refundable administration. After registration at the allotted IISER, the SAF was adjusted against the first-semester fee. Semester fees differed among IISERs, so the SAF was not the total cost of attendance and was not the original exam application fee.
Use the official fee table for the category entered in the application and the exact offer round. The 2026 withdrawal page set separate round-wise and final deadlines and described differing refunds. Before the round-wise withdrawal deadline, it stated that no cancellation fee applied; after that point but on or before final withdrawal, the non-refundable portion was deducted. After the final deadline, the allotted IISER’s rules applied. The specific portal procedure mattered: the 2026 page said withdrawal had to be made through the “WITHDRAW OFFER” control in the application portal, not by email or phone.
If you are uncertain about a choice, check the refund and cancellation consequences before paying. Save the transaction receipt, offer letter, selected response and deadline. A payment confirmation does not by itself complete reporting or document verification. If a technical payment problem occurs, use the official help channel and retain its acknowledgement; do not make duplicate payments based only on a pending screen.
A safe decision workflow for each round
- Open the official portal and confirm the current round, programme, category and deadline.
- Read the offer status and all available choices before responding.
- Compare the programme with your filed preference order and subject eligibility.
- Decide whether to accept/freeze, accept/float or reject using the current cycle’s definitions.
- Pay SAF only if required by the offer path, and save the receipt.
- Track the next round and any reporting or original-document requirement.
- If withdrawing, use the official portal control before the exact deadline and save confirmation.
Keep a calendar alert before each deadline rather than at the deadline. Check for official updates because dates and programme closure notices can change during allocation. Do not depend on an unofficial counsellor or a social-media message to extend a deadline.
Partner-institution admissions are separate
The 2026 brochure named five institutions outside the IISER group that used IAT for specified programmes. Applicants to IISc, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IACS or IIEST were instructed to apply to IAT and separately to the relevant programme. Their rank update, application form, counselling, offer, fee and response rules may not be the IISER common process. Follow each institution’s own notice; a preference in the IISER portal does not substitute for the separate application.
Official source and historical boundary
The official IISER Admissions 2026 admission-process page and fee/withdrawal page are the primary references for preference entry, allocation factors, accept/freeze/float, SAF and withdrawal. Their links are retained in the source record. Indexed official text was available, but direct page/PDF opens timed out during this check. The described rules and dates are historical IAT 2026 details, not a confirmed future-cycle schedule.
