IISER IAT 2026 eligibility: subjects, marks and programme-specific rules
IISER IAT eligibility has two layers: the candidate must satisfy the examination’s Class XII rules, and the chosen programme may add a subject requirement. The latest confirmed criteria located in the official Joint Admissions Committee material are for IAT 2026. They are useful for understanding the structure of eligibility, but they are not a promise that the 2027 or a later cycle will keep the same passing years, thresholds, documents or programme list.
IAT 2026 Class XII baseline
The 2026 information page allowed Indian nationals, OCI/PIO card holders and foreign nationals to apply, subject to the stated documentation rules. For the school qualification, candidates had to have passed Class XII or an equivalent examination in 2024 or 2025, or be appearing in 2026. The examination had to be from a board recognized by the Council of Boards of School Education in India. Applicants with results still pending could apply in that cycle, but admission remained conditional on later meeting the minimum criteria.
The science-subject rule was at least three subjects among Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics in Class XII or its equivalent. This does not mean that every applicant had to take all four. It also does not mean a candidate could ignore a programme-specific subject requirement: a student choosing an option that expressly required Mathematics still needed Mathematics in the qualifying examination.
For IAT 2026, the aggregate threshold was 60% or an equivalent grade for categories other than SC/ST/PwD, and 55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates. The brochure says the aggregate is calculated using all subjects taken in the qualifying examination, not only the best three science subjects. A student who meets the three-subject condition but falls short of the applicable aggregate would not meet this Class XII criterion. Use the official cycle instructions for how the board’s result is converted or documented; do not calculate a personal eligibility percentage by selecting only science marks unless the notice explicitly says to do so.
Four named programmes required Class XII Mathematics
The official IAT 2026 page explicitly required Mathematics for these programme routes:
This is a programme condition, not a blanket rule for taking IAT. A candidate without Class XII Mathematics could still satisfy the general three-of-four science subject rule for an eligible programme that did not impose this extra requirement. Conversely, meeting the general threshold alone does not make the four listed options available. The programme names and rules in this table are the ones shown in the 2026 materials; check the current brochure for any later programme or rule change before selecting preferences.
How boards, pending marks and repeat attempts were treated
The 2026 eligibility guidance addressed different school-board result formats. Where a board combined Class XI and XII marks, the criteria referred to Class XII marks. For a three-year diploma whose aggregate covered all years, the guidance used final-year marks; for a semester-based board, it referred to the final two semesters. If a board issued only letter grades and no equivalent percentage, the applicant was asked to obtain an equivalent-marks certificate from the board. Where the board could not provide one, the brochure supplied a conversion method based on the grade-point average and maximum point scale. Because board systems differ, candidates should follow the exact documentary method in the relevant year’s notice rather than applying a conversion from a different board or cycle.
The 2026 rules also included a limited repeat-performance provision: candidates who first appeared in Class XII in 2025 and reappeared in any subject in 2026 could have the better of the two performances considered. That provision is tied to the specified years and circumstances. It is not a general permission to combine marks from any two attempts, and it should not be carried into a later cycle without confirmation.
An applicant whose Class XII result had not yet been declared could submit an IAT application in 2026, but a provisional application did not waive the eligibility threshold. The candidate still had to submit the required marks or documents by the deadline and satisfy the criteria before admission was confirmed. The brochure also described special handling for certain Jammu and Kashmir Board candidates who sat a December examination, and documentation for Kashmiri Migrant applicants. These exceptions are narrowly described; use the current official wording and required certificate rather than assuming that a similar personal circumstance qualifies.
Category, nationality and accessibility documents
The 2026 policy applied Government of India reservation rules to seats and specified category documentation requirements. Category labels are not interchangeable: OBC-NCL is not the same as OBC without non-creamy-layer status, and EWS requires the prescribed certificate. The 2026 page stated that EWS and OBC-NCL certificates had to be issued on or after 1 April 2026. The exact issue date and accepted format are cycle-specific; check the relevant brochure before uploading a certificate.
OCI/PIO applicants and foreign nationals could apply under the stated 2026 route if they met the other criteria. Depending on where the qualifying examination was taken, the site required an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities. The foreign-national instructions distinguished applicants who had completed an equivalent Class XII qualification at a COBSE-recognized board in India from those whose qualification needed equivalence documentation. A candidate should confirm which path applies before submitting the form, since nationality classification and school-board recognition are separate questions.
The 2026 brochure also set out scribe and compensatory-time provisions for eligible candidates with disabilities. It described the relevant disability conditions, the need to request the facility during the online application, and the possibility of medical-board review. Do not treat a general disability certificate as automatic approval for every exam accommodation; check the current notice and submit the specified request and documentation through the stated process.
IAT eligibility is not the same as an offer
Meeting the Class XII conditions makes a candidate eligible to pursue the route; it does not predict a rank or guarantee a seat. The IAT result and the later seat-allocation decision are different stages. For IISERs, the 2026 admission page tied offers to the candidate’s rank, programme preferences, category and seat availability in that round. A programme may have eligibility conditions even when a candidate has a valid IAT score. For the five other institutions named in the 2026 brochure, applicants had to apply separately to the institution and check its own requirements, which could differ from IISER eligibility.
Before applying, make a programme-level checklist: confirm your passing year, count the required Class XII subjects, calculate the aggregate across the correct subjects, identify whether Mathematics is mandatory for the intended programme, and prepare the correct category or equivalence certificate. Then compare each external programme’s own admission notice with the central IAT brochure. This simple check prevents an otherwise avoidable mistake: being eligible to sit the test but not meeting a particular course’s subject or application rule.

The primary reference is the official IAT 2026 eligibility page and the Joint Admissions Committee’s 2026 information brochure. Their official URLs are listed in the source record. They were returned as official indexed extracts during this bounded check, while direct opens timed out; the evidence limitation is retained rather than treating an unopened page as newly read. All years, thresholds and exceptions in this guide are expressly IAT 2026 facts. No later-cycle criteria are inferred.
