JAM admit card: what to do before exam day
The admit card is a required exam-day document, but it is not sufficient by itself. JAM 2026 candidates had to download and print the card from JOAPS, then bring the original valid photo ID specified in their application. A phone or tablet display was not accepted as a substitute for the printed card. The steps below describe the 2026 instructions; use the current cycle’s notice for any later exam.
Release and download through JOAPS
For JAM 2026, the tentative schedule listed 5 January 2026 for admit-card availability. On that date, IIT Bombay posted a postponement notice and said a revised release date would be announced. A notification on 13 January then stated that the card could be downloaded and printed from JOAPS. This is a useful example of why candidates should not assume a calendar date means the file is already available. Check the official notification page and candidate portal, especially if the authority posts a revised date.
The FAQ says the admit card is available only as a download from the JAM website; it will not be sent by post or as an email attachment. Sign in using the registered credentials, download the PDF, and print it while access is available. Save a backup copy for your own use, but plan to carry the hard copy required by the 2026 instructions. If the portal shows no card or an incorrect status, follow the notice or contact details published by the organizing institute rather than relying on an unofficial file link.
Check the details as soon as it appears
Compare the card with your JOAPS application: candidate name, photograph, paper, examination date, session, centre address and identification details. Check that the photo and signature are recognizable and that the ID you plan to bring is the same valid document specified in your form. If any entry appears wrong, use the correction or grievance route named in the current official notice. Do not edit the PDF yourself or assume a mismatch will be accepted at the venue.
JAM 2026 applicants were told to bring an original, valid photo identity document, not an expired document, photocopy or scanned copy. The FAQ lists accepted Indian IDs as Aadhaar-UID, passport, PAN card, voter ID and driving licence, and allows specified government IDs for foreign nationals. It also states that the ID should be the one specified during the online application. Check the current brochure because an accepted list or entry procedure can change between cycles.
Prepare the exam-day set
Pack the printed admit card and the original ID the evening before the test. Read the card for reporting time, gate-closing instructions, centre location and permitted items. If the venue is unfamiliar, verify the route and leave enough travel margin. The JAM 2026 FAQ says a candidate permitted to enter late did not receive extra time for the delay, so arriving after the reporting window can reduce working time even where entry is allowed.
The JAM 2026 pattern instructions provided an on-screen virtual calculator and prohibited personal calculators, mobile phones and other electronic devices in the examination hall. The official instructions also said that a scribble pad would be provided and had to be returned at the end. Follow the exact items list in the admit card and current exam notice; do not assume a practice-session device or paper will be allowed in the centre.
Candidates with approved scribe or compensatory-time arrangements should carry or complete the forms identified by the applicable official instructions. The 2026 notices referenced an Appendix and Scribe Form for candidates opting for these accommodations. Check that your portal record and admit-card instructions reflect the approved arrangement, and raise a discrepancy before exam day through the official route. This page does not infer an accommodation approval from category status alone.
If the card is delayed or a problem remains
Use the chronology of notices rather than unofficial countdown posts. In 2026 the card date was postponed on 5 January and a release notice followed on 13 January. If a later cycle announces postponement, rely on the changed official date and check JOAPS again. Do not interpret the absence of an email attachment as a failed application; the FAQ explicitly directed candidates to download the card.
For a missing card, login problem or material mismatch, first check the application status and official notice page. Then use the current cycle’s published helpdesk or email address with your Enrolment ID and a concise description of the issue. Keep your confirmation and payment records. A printed card and correct ID solve the entry-document check, but they do not replace arriving at the assigned centre or meeting the time and conduct instructions on the card.
The practical sequence is simple: follow the official release notice, download from JOAPS, verify details, print the card, match it with the original ID entered in your application, and check permitted-item and accommodation instructions. For JAM 2026 those steps are documented in the FAQ and notification chronology; a later cycle must be checked against its own official directions.
