JAM counselling is an admission workflow, not a single list
For JAM 2026 IIT Admitting Institutes, IIT Bombay coordinated a JOAPS admission process with an application form, preference order, multiple offer rounds and a seat-response decision. A candidate first needed to qualify in the relevant paper and satisfy the programme’s ER and MEQ. The 2026 admission process is historical; follow the current brochure and portal for later-cycle forms, rounds, payment dates and withdrawal terms.
JAM also has Result Sharing Institutes. Their process is separate: candidates must approach the receiving institute or admission body directly. For example, the 2026 site said participating NITs and other listed institutions used JAM results through CCMN, while other institutions set out their own admission details. Do not assume that a JOAPS preference covers every programme that accepts a JAM score.
Apply and order eligible programmes
After the result, candidates meeting the requirements for the coordinated IIT process submitted an admission application through JOAPS and arranged programme preferences. The 2026 admission form carried a separate ₹750 non-refundable processing fee. The 2026 schedule listed 27 March to 15 April for the admission application and 6 May for freezing choices; the schedule identified these as tentative and subject to change.
Use the programme table to decide which preferences you can actually accept. Check the test paper, ER/MEQ, degree subjects, category and other programme conditions before adding a choice. The 2026 FAQ said there was no limit to preferences among programmes for which the candidate was eligible, but more entries are useful only if you would attend those programmes. Order them according to your genuine priorities, because the upgrade option refers to higher preferences.
Keep your application information and academic records ready. The admission FAQ described entering subjects and marks by semester/year and submitting marksheets or degree/provisional certificates. It said missing documents at registration should be submitted within the timeline set by the admitting institute. The institute verifies programme eligibility and documents; a provisional seat offer is not a substitute for completing those checks.
Respond to an offer in JOAPS
An offer notice identifies the institute, programme, category and deadline. The JAM 2026 process provided three choices:
Choose based on your actual preference order and willingness to accept risk. “Accept with Upgrade” is not simply a waitlist button: the current seat remains provisional while later offers are considered. “Accept and Freeze” removes you from future rounds, so use it only if you are satisfied with the programme. The 2026 instructions say that not responding by the offer deadline causes the offer to lapse and be treated as rejection.
For the 2026 process, candidates selecting freeze or upgrade for the first time paid a seat-booking fee of ₹15,000 for General, OBC-NCL or EWS, and ₹7,500 for SC, ST or PwD. The admission page says that amount would be transferred to the admitting institute and adjusted against its admission fee at final admission. Missing the payment deadline cancelled the offer. Candidates who had already paid were not required to pay again after a later upgrade, according to the page. Check the offer letter for the exact deadline and payment status rather than relying on a general calendar.
Track every round and later verification
The 2026 schedule listed first, second, third and fourth admission lists, followed by an additional round if needed. The admission-process page described offer decision and seat-payment deadlines for each list. The 2026 homepage later announced an additional/final seat-allocation round in early July and said the admission process would close afterwards. This illustrates that tentative calendar dates and later operational notices should be kept distinct.
After an offer, keep checking JOAPS on the scheduled dates even if email or SMS alerts arrive. The official process says offers and action links are available through the portal and no separate physical offer letter is sent. Once the offer is finalized, the admitting institute completes document and eligibility verification, any physical fitness assessment it requires, and final fee payment under its own rules. Your JAM seat-booking payment is not the full institute tuition bill.
Withdrawal is a separate decision from choosing “Reject and Quit.” The 2026 JAM process provided a portal withdrawal option during a stated window and described a refund after deducting a processing charge. Once a candidate withdrew, the allotted seat was forfeited and would not return to later rounds. Read the current policy carefully before withdrawing; a historic deadline or refund amount cannot be carried forward.
Keep result-sharing applications on their own track
The 2026 Result Sharing Institutes page directs candidates to the respective institute or admission body. It names CCMN for participating NITs and other institutions and points candidates to each institute for programme and process details. Confirm that your JAM paper is accepted by the programme, that you meet its MEQ, and that you have submitted the separate form and choices before that route closes. Then monitor both systems independently if you are also participating in JOAPS.
Before responding to any offer, review four items together: programme eligibility, your true preference order, the action deadline and the financial/document steps required. A qualifying score is permission to apply, not an automatic seat. The JAM 2026 notices show how admission runs through staged choices and time-sensitive actions; only the current official process can tell you what options are available for a later cycle.
