Review tuition feesPrinceton University is in Princeton, New Jersey. For a prospective international undergraduate, the first useful distinction is that Princeton admits students to the University, not to a named department. Once enrolled, undergraduates pursue either the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) or Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.). The current admission site lists 37 concentrations and more than 50 minors and interdepartmental certificate programmes; computer science is available through both degree routes. That structure matters when you compare Princeton with a university where admission is directly to a major: your application is not an application to a particular department, and you should not assume that a concentration choice determines admission.
The two degrees imply different academic paths. The A.B. is the broader liberal-arts route, while the B.S.E. is the engineering degree. Princeton's admissions pages describe the curriculum as encouraging exploration across disciplines and depth in one concentration. The distinction is not simply a label: prospective students should read the requirements for the degree that matches their intended work, especially if they are comparing a professional engineering curriculum with an arts-and-sciences programme. A student interested in computer science should investigate the specific A.B. and B.S.E. plans rather than treating the department name as a single curriculum. The University Registrar's catalogues, rather than a general overview, are the place to check current course offerings and degree regulations.
Princeton also includes graduate and professional study, but its undergraduate admission, housing, cost and aid information should not be generalized to every graduate school. Graduate fields publish their own requirements, deadlines, fees and financial support. This guide therefore gives most detail to the undergraduate applicant, and flags where a statement is specifically undergraduate. If your goal is a master's or doctoral degree, begin with the relevant graduate programme and its catalogue before applying.
Princeton's A.B. and B.S.E. are the central undergraduate degree choices. The official degrees-and-departments directory helps an applicant see where a field sits and whether it offers one or both routes. The catalogue adds the information needed to test academic fit: course descriptions, requirements, prerequisites and regulations. Use those two resources together. A list of concentrations tells you what can be studied; a current catalogue explains how the study is organized and what students must complete.
This distinction is especially useful for applicants who are choosing between an interdisciplinary liberal-arts plan and a sequence with more prescribed technical coursework. Compare required introductory courses, options for exploration before concentration, and any independent or advanced work expected later. Do not infer that two programmes with similar titles have interchangeable requirements. Check whether the relevant concentration is offered under the A.B., B.S.E. or both, and review the named degree requirements rather than relying on a third-party summary. Course availability can vary by term, so the course catalogue is more reliable for planning than an old course list or a general description.
At the graduate level, use Princeton's Graduate School catalogue for fields of study, degree requirements, courses and deadlines. Professional programmes may sit outside a single university-wide admissions calendar. Before judging fit, identify the exact degree, school and entry term, then compare required preparation, research or practicum components, and the curriculum's relationship to your next step. A faculty member's research profile can help a doctoral applicant assess scholarly fit, but it does not establish that the person is accepting students or has agreed to supervise. Confirm that point through the programme's own process.
Princeton states that it reviews applications in the same manner regardless of citizenship or country of residence. It evaluates international applicants in the context of their education system, school curriculum and available opportunities. This is important for students whose school reports marks differently from a U.S. transcript: the University says applicants are not expected to create a U.S. grade-point average when their school or system does not normally provide one. Instead, submit the records requested by the application and explain the context through the school report or additional information where appropriate.
For school records, Princeton's international guidance discusses internal grades and external examination results, including IGCSE, A-level, IB and national leaving examinations such as India's Standard X and XII. When leaving results are part of graduation requirements but arrive after the final-report deadline, the school should send predicted or achieved results as they become available. For an admitted student who intends to enrol, the school must submit a final report with available internal grades and final-year external marks. Ask your school official to follow the portal's current submission instructions; do not replace the requested record with a self-converted GPA or assume that an applicant-uploaded copy is the final official record.
If the school has no university counsellor, Princeton says a principal, vice-principal or dean may complete the School Report. A recommendation or report written in another language must be officially translated before submission; the University says a school official or third party may translate it and that a paid translation is not required. Build a document tracker with the item, issuing official, language, translation, submission route and portal status. This makes it easier to distinguish an application that you submitted from one whose school documents have arrived. Recheck the admissions checklist for your actual entry cycle before sending anything.
Princeton's testing policy changes by admission cycle. Its published rule says first-year and transfer applicants seeking to enrol in fall 2028, the 2027-28 admission cycle, must submit either SAT or ACT scores. Princeton specifies no minimum score and says testing is one part of a contextual, holistic review. By contrast, applicants seeking fall 2027 entry in the 2026-27 cycle remain test optional. These two statements apply to different cycles; a student should not carry the test-optional rule forward to a later cycle or treat the required-test policy as a target score. Check the official testing page again when the application for your year opens, because the policy and accepted reporting process can change.
English proficiency is a separate question from SAT or ACT. Princeton's international applicant guidance says an applicant must take TOEFL, IELTS Academic, Duolingo English Test or PTE Academic if English is not the applicant's native language and the applicant attends a school where English is not the language of instruction. It also states an exception for applicants whose native language is English or who have spent at least three years at a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction. The application calendar marks English tests as applicable rather than universal. Read both conditions together, and check how the chosen test must be reported and by which deadline.
Do not apply a graduate department's language or test requirement to undergraduate admission, or assume that an undergraduate rule governs a graduate course. The target programme's current admissions page is the authority for graduate applicants. If your schooling spans multiple languages or institutions, identify the language of instruction for the relevant secondary school years and ask the admissions office if your situation does not fit the published examples. A specific written answer is safer than relying on a general assumption.
Princeton Admission estimates undergraduate cost of attendance at USD 94,624 for 2026-27. The published student budget separates billed direct charges from indirect estimates. Tuition is USD 68,140; standard housing is USD 13,010; food is USD 9,110; and fees are USD 314. Books, course materials, supplies and equipment are estimated at USD 1,050, with miscellaneous personal expenses at USD 3,000. Those last two estimates total USD 4,050, which the institution groups as miscellaneous costs. Transportation varies and is listed separately, with a possible range from USD 50 to USD 5,000. The University notes that students not covered by a family health insurance policy must purchase its Student Health Plan.
The component arithmetic helps prevent a misleading comparison. Tuition, housing, food and fees sum to USD 90,574 in direct student-bill charges. Books and personal expenses add USD 4,050 in indirect estimates, producing the stated USD 94,624 before variable transportation and any applicable health-plan charge. This is a reproducible reading of Princeton's listed budget, not a separate fee quotation. It also explains why comparing tuition alone with another university's total cost can understate the amount a family needs to plan for. Housing and food figures assume University dormitories and meal plans; a student's actual personal and transport costs can differ.
These amounts are for the 2026-27 academic year, not a promised price for a 2027-28 entrant. Use the university's student bill estimator for charges and consult the next published budget when available. The aid award can change the amount a family pays, but the gross budget remains useful for planning and comparison. For payment, Princeton lists a semester plan and a ten-month plan running August through May; the monthly option has an enrolment fee. Confirm the current plan terms before choosing a payment schedule.
Princeton's admission and cost-and-aid pages state that admission is need-blind and that the University meets the full demonstrated financial need of admitted international students on the same basis as U.S. students. The undergraduate programme is need-based rather than merit-based: qualifying aid is grant aid, not a loan that must be repaid, and Princeton says it does not award academic or athletic merit scholarships through this programme. An international applicant who would need assistance should therefore review the aid application alongside admission requirements rather than assume that applying for aid disadvantages an application.
“Full demonstrated need” is determined by Princeton's assessment of family resources; it is not a fixed award promised to every applicant. The University says the family contribution is based on its evaluation of the financial-aid application and that award amounts may change as family circumstances and the cost of attendance change. Current undergraduates must apply for aid each year. For an applicant, the practical step is to submit the correct financial-aid forms and supporting records by the deadline for the chosen application round, then compare the award letter with the bill and estimated indirect costs. The published calculator has residence limitations, so international applicants should use the international aid instructions rather than assume the calculator applies to them.
The distinction between undergraduate and graduate funding matters. The cited need-blind, no-loan statements are presented in Princeton's undergraduate admission and aid context. Graduate students should not infer that their tuition or living expenses will be covered by the same policy. Their school and programme must specify fellowships, assistantships, tuition support, work expectations and renewal conditions. Treat a written award for a named programme and year as controlling, not a general university-level statement.
Princeton guarantees on-campus housing for four years. First- and second-year undergraduates are required to live on campus; juniors and seniors may remain in a residential college or make other living and dining arrangements while keeping their college affiliation. Entering first-years are assigned to one of seven residential colleges: Butler, Forbes, Mathey, Huo, Rockefeller, Whitman or Yeh. The assignment is random, so applicants should not plan around securing a particular college. The colleges combine residence with advising and community life, rather than functioning only as accommodation buildings.
The practical comparison is between a highly residential first two years and the greater choice available to upper-year students. Princeton describes the colleges as places for academic and personal support, including residential college advisers and faculty, deans and student-life staff. Students may participate in college activities even if, in junior or senior year, they choose another on-campus arrangement. The guarantee does not mean that every student has a choice of a particular room, college or meal arrangement. Housing forms, assignment notices and current policies govern those details.
Students who need accessibility support should engage the Office of Disability Services early. ODS works with undergraduate and graduate students to facilitate reasonable accommodations and describes an interactive process that includes an intake interview. It also requires documentation from a qualified professional that meets its currency and content requirements and supports the accommodation requested. Equal access is the stated aim, but an accommodation is not automatic merely because a student submits a request. Contact ODS to understand the documentation and timing for your circumstances. The university-wide housing information and ODS process are more useful planning sources than assuming the housing guarantee resolves room-access or support needs.
Princeton's Center for Career Development provides advising, programmes and resources for exploring career fields, internships, employment and further study. Its official first-destination report describes senior outcomes through employment, continuing education, seeking and other categories, with filters for class year and concentration. The report can help a prospective student see the range of destinations associated with an academic area, but it is a snapshot of initial plans, not a long-term employment study. Princeton explains that it surveys seniors in spring and follows up for six months after graduation with people who reported that they were still seeking a job or graduate study. Prior-year figures are not retrospectively updated.
The methodology combines student self-reports from senior checkout, later email or telephone responses, LinkedIn and information verified by employers or academic departments. That mixture is more informative than an isolated placement percentage, but it still has limits: it describes the first destination reported for a graduating class, not current occupation, earnings, job security or a causal effect of the degree. A reader should filter by class year and concentration, check the category definitions and treat missing or seeking responses as meaningful rather than silently excluding them. Do not compare a small concentration cohort with a large programme without considering the denominator.
Use career resources to test how you will build experience, not as a promise of a specific job. Ask what advising, employer events, internships or further-study guidance is open to your student status and year. International students should separately check the university's resources for international students and federal rules before planning paid work; the general outcomes dashboard does not establish work authorization. If you are considering graduate or professional school, compare the report's continuing-education destinations with the prerequisite and application path for that profession.
An admission offer and U.S. immigration permission are separate steps. Princeton's Davis International Center supports new international students and provides a welcome guide covering travel and practical matters. Follow the University's instructions for the immigration document appropriate to your circumstances, then use the U.S. Department of State and consular instructions for the visa application. An I-20 or DS-2019 is a school-issued document in the student process; it is not a visa and does not itself guarantee entry.
Davis explains the distinction between a visa stamp and immigration status. A visa is issued by a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad and allows its holder to request entry; status is conferred during inspection at the port of entry. A student may therefore have lawful status in the United States even when a visa stamp in the passport has expired, but travel abroad can require a new visa before returning. The International Center cautions that visa processing may take time and advises students with travel questions to consult the relevant academic department. Individual circumstances and current government procedures matter, so do not rely on a generic timeline or treat an old visa as proof of current status.
After accepting an offer, keep a checklist for the university's requested financial documents, immigration form, passport, visa appointment, travel arrangements and orientation. Follow the current Davis instructions for your student category and entry date; the dates for a prior international orientation cohort are not a standing schedule. Make travel plans that can accommodate administrative or consular delays, and confirm the date on which campus housing becomes available before arriving early. For legal questions about eligibility, status or work permission, use the official government guidance or qualified advice rather than relying on an admissions overview.
