PTE Academic is Pearson’s computer-based English proficiency test for people who need to demonstrate English ability for study and other approved purposes. It assesses Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening through integrated tasks. A score report describes English performance; it is not an admission offer, visa, professional licence or guarantee that a university will accept the result. The institution, programme and intake decide which test, delivery mode, overall score, communicative-skill minimums and score age they accept.
For a higher-education application, begin with the exact programme page, not a general statement that a university “accepts PTE.” Record the accepted variant, required overall score, minimum skill scores, result-recency rule, application deadline and score-sending method. Requirements can differ between departments and degrees at the same institution. Pearson’s institution search is a useful shortlist tool; Pearson itself directs candidates to confirm full requirements with institutions. No universal passing mark applies to admissions.
PTE Academic is the relevant PTE option for most study applications. PTE Academic UKVI has the same content, format and scoring as Academic, but supplies a Secure English Language Test Unique Reference Number for UK visa routes that require one. This does not mean every UK course or visa route requires UKVI. Check the exact course and government route before booking; an institution’s language condition and an immigration requirement are separate decisions.
PTE Core and PTE Home serve different purposes. Pearson describes PTE Core as a general-English test used for specified Canadian permanent-residence and citizenship routes. PTE Home A1, A2 and B1 are shorter two-skill Speaking and Listening tests used for particular UK family or settlement routes. They are not interchangeable with the four-skill Academic test. Do not choose by the shared “PTE” name: verify the named test in the recipient’s current rules. Pearson’s test comparison explains the distinctions.
PTE Academic reports scores on a 10–90 scale, including an overall score and communicative-skill information. The number is a measure on Pearson’s scale, not a percentage and not a universal pass/fail result. Each recipient sets its own threshold. A programme may require both an overall score and a minimum in one or more skills, so an overall figure alone may not show whether you meet the condition. Compare every reported component with the exact requirement.
PTE score conversion tables and concordance studies can help readers compare test scales, but they are reference tools rather than an admissions decision. Follow the institution’s own accepted-test and score policy. Do not convert another test’s result into a guaranteed PTE admission score or assume that a broad equivalence chart overrides a course-specific rule.
The Academic test is delivered at a test centre and lasts about two hours across three parts. Pearson’s update applying to tests taken after 7 August 2025 added Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation to Speaking & Writing and revised some scoring procedures. Older preparation material may omit these tasks. Use current Pearson format and preparation pages when you practise.
Appointments are booked on a rolling basis through myPTE: centres show live dates and times rather than one annual national examination date. Availability depends on location and can change. Pearson says results are usually available within two business days, although some may take up to five. These are service expectations, not a guaranteed deadline for an institution to process a score. Work backward from the application deadline and leave time for appointment availability, result release, score sharing and any retake you may need.
Pearson’s score report is valid on its platform for two years from the test date. A recipient may set a different score-recency rule, so check whether the result must be recent at application, enrolment or another point. Fees also vary by country and selected test. The public India fee page did not expose a readable amount in the 28 October 2026 source check; select the test and location in Pearson’s live booking flow to see the current price. Do not rely on an undated or older third-party fee figure.
Before paying, write down the destination, programme, intake and the exact required test variant. Confirm overall and skill minimums, accepted delivery mode, score age and official score-submission process directly with the institution. If a UK visa is involved, check the visa route separately for a SELT requirement. Then confirm the test centre, available appointment, current ID policy and checkout total in myPTE. Keep the booking confirmation and score-report details together. This short check prevents a valid English result from being unusable for the particular application.
Start by identifying what needs the English result. If the requirement is for a university or college application, open the exact course page and look for PTE Academic. Then confirm whether the course accepts a centre-based test, whether it specifies an overall score and component floors, and when it expects the report. If the course says PTE without naming a variant, ask admissions before paying. The score scale and Pearson’s general institution search cannot answer every course-specific question.
If a UK immigration application is also involved, check that route independently. Some routes require a Secure English Language Test and a Unique Reference Number; PTE Academic UKVI supplies that reference. Other routes may name a different test or may not require a language test. Do not infer a visa requirement from the university’s English page, and do not assume that a course’s acceptance of Academic settles the visa route. Read the current government instructions for the applicant’s exact circumstances.
If the purpose is Canadian permanent residence or citizenship, investigate PTE Core and the responsible government’s approved-test list. If the purpose is a UK family or settlement route, verify whether the route names PTE Home A1, A2 or B1. Those are distinct two-skill tests. They are not shorter versions of the study-focused four-skill Academic assessment. The test name, required level and permitted purpose all need to match.
PTE Academic’s 10–90 scale gives a standardized score, but applicants should read it together with the receiving course’s conditions. For example, a programme might require a stated overall result and a separate floor in writing or speaking. A candidate whose overall score meets the number could still miss the skill floor. Conversely, a score lower than one programme’s requirement does not mean that the person is ineligible to sit PTE or cannot apply to another course with a different policy.
The score is also not an academic qualification. It cannot replace a required school-leaving certificate, subject prerequisite, grade, entrance examination, portfolio or work experience. Treat language evidence and academic eligibility as separate checklist items. When an application portal groups them together, submit each item in the field the institution specifies and do not assume that an English score completes the whole application.
Concordance tables can help compare two English-test scales, but each publisher’s table has a scope and date. It does not establish that a university accepts the alternative test, waive a skill minimum or guarantee the same decision. Use a table only when the institution refers to it or confirms the comparison. If a course names a minimum for PTE specifically, follow that number unless admissions confirms an alternative in writing.
The candidate’s appointment date is only the first milestone. Search live centre availability, confirm the identity rules, sit the test, wait for the result, share the official report and allow the recipient time to process it. Pearson says most results arrive within two business days and some take up to five; a later result is possible. An institution may also need additional time to verify a score. Do not schedule on the assumption that the test date and application review happen in a single step.
Check when the score must be received, not only when the form must be submitted. Some application portals accept an application before all evidence arrives; others require all documents by the closing date. Ask whether a pending result can be sent later. If a retake might be necessary, leave enough time for a second slot and score release, but do not assume a second sitting will fit a tight deadline. Availability is dynamic, and candidate-specific rescheduling terms apply.
Pearson’s two-year report validity answers how long the report remains valid in its system. It does not automatically determine the application’s score-age limit. A course may require a result within a shorter period or measure recency at enrolment. Record the test date and ask the receiving office how its rule is applied. This matters when an applicant takes a test well before the intended intake or defers an offer.
When comparing PTE with another English test, compare the recipient’s rule, not just the format or reported scores. Check accepted versions, mode, total threshold, skill-specific floors, report validity and how the score is delivered. A test with convenient appointments may be a poor choice if the target programme does not accept that variant. A test accepted for admission may still fail a separate professional registration or immigration rule.
If applying to several universities, build a small per-course matrix rather than relying on one institution-wide statement. Keep the programme and intake beside each score requirement. If the schools share a minimum, confirm that each accepts the same variant and mode. One result may support multiple applications, but the candidate must send it to each destination as instructed and meet every recipient’s deadline and recency condition.
Before checkout, confirm the selected test, location, centre, date, time, candidate identity and displayed total. The amount depends on the country and selected test; no readable India price or effective date was present in the static Pearson page examined on 28 October 2026. The live selected-test booking screen is the place to view a current price. Keep the receipt and booking confirmation. Recheck the cancellation or rescheduling terms before accepting the appointment because options depend on lead time.
Finally, use current official pages for the test itself and for the destination requirement. The Pearson product, ID and score pages describe the provider’s rules; the university, government or regulator controls acceptance for its own purpose. A good application plan keeps these responsibilities distinct and records the answer from each authority. That simple discipline is more reliable than treating a single score, website directory or two-year validity statement as a universal guarantee.
Before choosing a date, confirm the score must arrive by the recipient’s deadline, not simply by the day you submit the form.

PTE Academic reports overall and communicative-skill scores on a 10-90 scale. This is not a universal pass mark: institutions set their own overall and skill requirements. Pearson says score reports are valid in its system for two years from the test date; a recipient may apply its own score-recency rule.
