Army Institute of Technology (AIT) in Pune follows a distinct eligibility route for its engineering programmes. The institute’s 2025 prospectus says admissions were based on JEE Main 2025 All India Rank, but applicants also had to submit a separate AIT application and satisfy the institute’s armed-forces family eligibility rules. That prospectus covered 2025-26. As of this review, it is historical guidance; candidates must check AIT’s next prospectus for current dates, seat distribution and terms.
First check the family eligibility condition
AIT was established by the Army Welfare Education Society for children of serving and retired Indian Armed Forces personnel. In the 2025 prospectus, eligible applicants included children of serving or retired Army, Navy and Air Force personnel and children of war widows receiving liberalised pension. The prospectus also describes specific categories involving Army personnel who served through the Army Postal Service, Military Nursing Service and Territorial Army. These categories have service, pension or other documentary conditions. A general connection to the armed forces is not enough: an applicant must fit a category stated in the applicable prospectus and provide its required certificate.
The prospectus further requires Indian citizenship, or a person of Indian origin intending to settle permanently in India who obtains Indian citizenship before admission. It lists categories of applicants who are not eligible, including candidates whose parent or guardian does not fall within its defined groups. Because eligibility language can be amended, do not use this summary to decide a borderline case. Compare the exact status and service record against the current prospectus and contact AIT’s admissions office when a certificate or category is unclear.
Academic eligibility is a separate test
For the 2025 intake, the prospectus required a Class XII or equivalent qualification with English, Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. It also required Physics and Mathematics plus one of a listed set of subjects, including Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, a technical vocational subject, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics Practices, Agriculture, Engineering Graphics, Business Studies, Electronics or Entrepreneurship. A minimum 45% was specified in that subject combination, subject to applicable directions from AICTE, the Government of Maharashtra and Savitribai Phule Pune University.
Applicants who had appeared for the qualifying examination could apply under the conditions in the prospectus, but had to provide proof of passing when called for admission. The institute also noted that final acceptance of eligibility rested with AIT and Savitribai Phule Pune University during admission and document scrutiny. A predicted board result or an online form submission therefore did not itself confirm eligibility.
JEE Main and AIT forms were both mandatory
The 2025 prospectus said AIT admission was based on the candidate’s JEE Main 2025 All India Rank. It instructed applicants to complete two different steps: register for JEE Main with the National Testing Agency and submit AIT’s own online application. The AIT form had to include the JEE Main application number, and the prospectus warned that leaving it out could lead to rejection. It also required a soft copy of the JEE Main admit card or hall ticket.
These were the rules and dates for that past cycle, not a 2027-28 announcement. The 2025 AIT application schedule and JEE Main deadlines have expired. Before applying in a later cycle, verify the current JEE Main bulletin and the new AIT prospectus independently. Do not assume the old dates, fee, form sequence, exam sessions, or merit formula will repeat unchanged.
How the merit list worked in the cited prospectus
For 2025, the institute used JEE Main All India Rank to prepare its merit list. The prospectus provided additional weightage for specified gallantry awards received by a parent, subject to the listed award and documentation rules. It described how the adjusted merit score was applied and used the earlier JEE Main rank to resolve a tie after the applicable weightage. Applicants should read the full current rules rather than calculate a projected AIT position from a rank predictor or from an older merit list.
AIT’s 2025 prospectus listed five four-year B.Tech branches: Computer Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Automation and Robotics Engineering. It showed a total of 480 seats for that prospectus year. The branch-wise seat table also separated Army, Navy and Air Force vacancies. That is a historical 2025-26 seat table, not a current vacancy promise. Confirm the branch names, seat count and service allocation in the prospectus for the year in which you apply.
Documents to prepare, then verify against the live notice
The 2025 document checklist included the JEE Main admit card, Class XII marksheet and passing certificate when already available, and service or dependent-category certificates applicable to the applicant. Applicants should also ensure that names and parent details match across the AIT application, JEE Main application and academic or service documents. The prospectus places responsibility on candidates to provide complete and accurate information, and its eligibility decision can include later scrutiny of originals.
Use this practical sequence when the next cycle opens:
- Check the current AIT prospectus first and confirm that the applicant’s exact dependent or service category is eligible.
- Register for the JEE Main cycle specified by AIT, using the current NTA bulletin for exam dates, eligibility and form instructions.
- Submit AIT’s separate application by the current AIT deadline. Enter the JEE Main application number exactly as requested.
- Upload the required academic records, JEE Main hall ticket and applicable service-category certificates in the format stated for that cycle.
- Follow AIT’s official merit-list, counselling and joining notices. Verify branch allocation, document scrutiny and any fee-payment instruction directly from AIT.
AIT became autonomous from AY 2025-26 while remaining affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University, according to the 2025 prospectus. That institutional change is relevant context, but it does not replace the admission and academic eligibility rules published for each intake. Candidates should rely on the latest official prospectus and notices for their own application year.
What to confirm before paying or travelling
Check that you are using a notice hosted by AIT or the National Testing Agency, that it names the correct academic year, and that any application number, certificate format and deadline match the current cycle. Keep the submitted forms and payment acknowledgements. If a service record is unusual, or a parent’s status does not fit the listed wording, seek clarification from AIT before relying on an informal interpretation. An old prospectus, a third-party cutoff page or a rank estimate cannot guarantee eligibility, a merit position or a seat.
