The Army Institute of Technology (AIT) operates a fully residential campus situated at Dighi Hills in Pune. Because the institution exclusively serves wards of Army personnel, the campus infrastructure is intentionally designed as a self-contained ecosystem. The location in Dighi Hills places the institute somewhat away from central Pune commercial hubs. To mitigate this access constraint and support daily student life without requiring frequent off-campus travel, AIT integrates academic, residential, dining, recreational, and essential utility services directly within its perimeter.
Residential Life and Accommodations
On-campus housing is a central component of the AIT experience, with separate zones for male and female students. The institute maintains five boys' hostels (Abdul Kalam, Vishwesvariya, Homi Bhabha, SN Bose, and Sarabhai) which collectively provide a capacity of 1,130 students. Female students are accommodated in the Kalpana Chawla hostel, which has a capacity of 175.
Each student is provided with standard room furnishings, including an individual bed, study table, chair, cupboard, and bookshelf. The residential blocks are designed for continuous operation, supported by 24/7 power backup and high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity. Daily utilities include a central 1,000-litre-per-hour Reverse Osmosis (RO) water plant that supplies purified drinking water across all hostel floors, while bathrooms are equipped with combined solar and electrical water heating systems. For after-hours academic work, students have access to rooftop study halls. When off-duty, students can use hostel recreation rooms equipped with televisions, pool tables, foosball, and carrom boards.
Dining and Daily Amenities
Food services at AIT are structured to provide continuous, regulated dining. The primary meals are served in the hostel messes, which operate modern kitchens. The menus are actively managed by a Students' Mess Committee to ensure the food meets student preferences while maintaining nutritional standards and reasonable pricing. For alternative dining, an open-air cafeteria located adjacent to the academic block offers North Indian, South Indian, Chinese, and Continental options.
To address the distance from city markets, AIT hosts a dedicated shopping complex on the premises. This complex covers routine requirements with a general store, stationery shop, laundry service, barber, fruit vendor, and ice-cream shop. Financial transactions are facilitated by a 24-hour HDFC Bank ATM located securely within the academic block.
Academic Support and Library Infrastructure
The central library functions as the primary academic and research hub, occupying a 723-square-meter area. It is designed to accommodate intensive study schedules, remaining open from 8:30 AM to 10:45 PM Monday through Saturday, and from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Sundays. Access is secured via a biometric entry system, and the space includes an air-conditioned reading hall with a seating capacity of 156 students, fully supported by Wi-Fi.
The library maintains a physical collection of over 36,998 volumes and 12,585 titles, managed through a bar-code-based circulation system and a Web OPAC accessible via the campus intranet. Students can borrow between four and five books simultaneously, depending on their year of study. The digital section provides access to 985 e-journals, 1,961 e-books, NPTEL videos, and CBT resources. For specialized research needs that exceed the campus collection, students benefit from AIT's institutional memberships with the Jayakar Library at Savitribai Phule Pune University and the A.R.A.I. Library in Pune. A Plagiarism Check Facility using Turnitin is also available to maintain academic integrity.
Sports, Fitness, and Healthcare
Given the student demographic, physical fitness is structurally integrated into the campus routine. The institute designates specific sports hours from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Indoor facilities are housed within a multipurpose hall that features a squash court, a badminton court, and dedicated spaces for table tennis, chess, carrom, and yoga. Fitness conditioning is supported by a well-equipped central gymnasium for boys and a separate dedicated gymnasium for girls. The outdoor sports infrastructure includes a standard cricket ground alongside a cemented practice pitch, a football ground, a volleyball court, two basketball hard courts, and a tennis hard court.
Primary healthcare is managed directly on campus at the Medical Inspection (MI) room, which is staffed by a nursing assistant and visited by a medical officer. For severe medical conditions, emergencies, or specialized treatment, students are transferred to military medical facilities, specifically the MI room at the Bombay Engineer Group (BEG) or the Military Hospital (MH) in Kirkee. To ensure immediate transit during medical emergencies, a dedicated ambulance remains stationed on the AIT campus 24/7.
