Start with the scheme for your programme
IIT Bombay does not offer one scholarship with the same eligibility and payment for every student. The Academic Office separates undergraduate scholarships and tuition-fee remission from postgraduate and Ph.D. assistantships, government schemes and private awards. First identify your programme, category and academic year, then open the scheme page and current notice that applies to you. A scholarship listed on an institute page may be limited by degree, year of study, merit, family income, category, funding source or continued academic performance.
For undergraduate students, the current Academic Office index lists Institute Merit-cum-Means (MCM), free messing facilities for SC/ST students, tuition-fee remission, named scholarships, government scholarships including National Talent Search, and private scholarships. These are distinct options. Do not assume a student who qualifies for one automatically qualifies for all, or that an external award can be combined with an institute scholarship.
Postgraduate and doctoral support
The Academic Office lists different postgraduate support routes, including Teaching Assistantship (TA), Research Assistantship (RA), QIP, CSIR/UGC fellowships, PMRF and other government or private scholarships. It lists separate options for Ph.D., M.Tech., M.Des., MPP, selected M.S. by Research fields and M.Sc. students. These names do not imply that every student in a degree receives an assistantship. The category, entrance route, department, funding source, academic standing and work expectations can differ.
For example, TA and RA support can carry assigned teaching, laboratory or research duties and conditions for continuation. Fellowship amounts and tenure may be set by the sponsoring agency, while institute assistantship rules can be revised. The Academic Office's PG/Ph.D. scholarship page includes revision dates for some linked terms, including 2023 and earlier, so treat those entries as a directory unless the linked current notice confirms amount and duration for your offer year. Do not use an old stipend table as a 2027-28 guarantee.
Application and budgeting checklist
Before accepting an award, read the application notice and verify the current academic year, eligible programmes and years, household-income period, certificate format, merit basis, duration, renewal conditions and payment schedule. Ask whether you must maintain registration and satisfactory academic progress, and whether the award is paid to you or adjusted against an institute charge. Keep copies of certificates and acknowledgements and track the official application window; scholarship forms can have deadlines separate from admission counselling.
IIT Bombay's MCM document says a recipient cannot accept another government, semi-government or private scholarship under that scheme and must declare any scholarship received or applied for. Because this restriction is scheme-specific, check the wording of each award before accepting two forms of support. Do not assume that a named or external scholarship can stack with MCM or fee remission without written confirmation.
If the amount is not confirmed for your joining year, prepare a budget using the current fee schedule and treat scholarship support as uncertain until an award letter is issued. Compare tuition remission, scholarships and assistantships separately, and account for recurring hostel and mess costs. This prevents an income-based tuition award from being mistaken for a complete cost waiver or a guaranteed stipend.
The official Academic Office pages are the starting point for current rules. Contact the office or the scheme administrator for your programme when the linked PDF is dated, a newer batch notice is pending, or your case combines awards. Published awards can change between academic years; the 2024-25 examples here explain how schemes are structured, not what every 2027 applicant will receive.
