Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, or MACE, is one of those institutions that feels like it’s been around forever—and in Kerala’s engineering landscape, it practically has. Established in 1961, this government-aided college in Kothamangalam has built a reputation on solid academics, a sprawling 62-acre campus, and a recent, hard-earned NAAC A+ grade. But the real story here is the balance it strikes. It’s not a top-tier NIT, but for a student with a decent KEAM rank looking for a serious, no-nonsense engineering education without the exorbitant price tag of a private college, MACE presents a compelling, value-for-money proposition. The recent UGC-granted autonomous status (2023) gives it more control over its curriculum, and the placement numbers, while modest, reflect a stable, core-and-IT mix of opportunities. You’re getting a legacy institution that’s quietly modernizing, set against the green backdrop of the Ernakulam district.

Courses and Academic Programs at Mar Athanasius College of Engineering

MACE runs a fairly standard but comprehensive set of programs under the KTU framework, with a total B.Tech intake of 864 students. The branch-wise seats tell a story of shifting demand: Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical & Electronics have 120 seats each in the first year, while the newer, buzzier programs have smaller intakes. Computer Science and Engineering has just 60 seats, but CSE (Data Science) takes 120, and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning has 60. That’s a clear institutional pivot towards computing fields, though the core engineering branches remain the historical backbone of the college.

The postgraduate offerings are robust, with an M.Tech intake of 165 across specializations like VLSI, Structural Engineering, Thermal Power, and Power Electronics. There’s also a two-year MCA program. A key academic feature is the option for B.Tech students to pursue "honors" or "minors" in allied branches, which is a decent way to add some specialization to your degree. The faculty strength is around 151, and the consensus from student reviews is that they are largely supportive and qualified. With autonomy now in effect, the college has more leeway to update syllabi and introduce value-added courses, which is a positive step.

MACE Placements: Packages, Companies & Reality Check

This is where you need to read between the lines of the official brochure. The college claims an 85% placement rate. The NIRF 2025 report, which is a more standardized metric, tells a different, but not necessarily bleak, story. For the 2024 placement cycle, 55.8% of eligible UG students (287 out of 514) and 60.5% of eligible PG students (46 out of 76) were placed. An overall figure from 2023 shows 303 B.Tech placements out of 478 graduates, which is about 63%. That’s the official data reality.

Now, the student sentiment. Reviews consistently say that "almost every student without any arrears will get a placement." That’s a crucial qualifier. The median package figures from NIRF—₹3.90 LPA for UG and ₹4.12 LPA for PG—align with what students report: average packages in the ₹3-4 LPA range. The highest package is a bit of a moving target; there’s a verified ₹33.4 LPA from 2021, and talk of a ₹42 LPA in reviews, but these are outliers. The typical graduate is looking at an offer from the steady parade of IT service giants: Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, Cognizant, HCL. For core branches, placement is more reliant on local industries, Kochi Metro, Cochin Shipyard, and the like. The takeaway? If you keep your backlogs clear, you have a very good shot at a job. Just temper your salary expectations to the Kerala/IT-services average.

Fees and Financial Aid at MACE

This is arguably MACE’s strongest selling point. For 2026, the annual tuition fee for B.Tech is ₹45,000. For merit students, it’s even lower, around ₹9,650 per year. Compare that to any private engineering college and the value is stark. M.Tech fees are ₹55,000 annually. Hostel fees add another ₹35,000 per year for accommodation and mess facilities.

Where MACE truly shines is its scholarship ecosystem. They’ve got it down to a system. Around 80% of students receive some form of financial aid. The list is extensive: central and state government schemes (Post Matric for SC/ST, Merit-cum-Means), private sector scholarships, need-based awards, and even scholarships funded by alumni chapters in Kuwait and Qatar. There are also college-specific scholarships from the MACE Alumni Association and the PTA. The amounts typically range from ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 annually. For a student from a modest background, this support network can make the already low fees almost negligible.

Admissions: Eligibility, Cutoffs & Selection Process

For B.Tech, the only game in town is the Kerala Engineering, Agricultural and Medical (KEAM) entrance exam. Admission is through the state counseling based on your KEAM rank, which itself is based 50% on the entrance test and 50% on your 12th-grade marks in relevant subjects. There’s also a 15% management quota, but even those seats are filled based on KEAM rank.

The cutoffs give you a sense of the competition. For the 2025 cycle, the Round 1 closing rank for Computer Science Engineering was 7067 (EZ category). For ECE it was 13827, for Data Science 15047, and for AI & ML 16570. Civil and Mechanical would have ranks stretching further. If you have a rank between, say, 7,000 and 25,000, MACE’s core and CS-related branches are in play. For M.Tech, a valid GATE score is the primary ticket, with DTE scores as a fallback. MCA admissions go through an entrance test conducted by the LBS Centre.

Campus, Hostels and Student Life

The 62-acre campus is a blessing and a curse. It’s beautiful, green, and spacious—but students complain about the walking. Infrastructure is a definite plus. There are 50 well-equipped labs, a central library with digital access, and specialized facilities like an IoT Lab and a Fab Lab with 3D printers. The 51 classrooms are spacious and have projectors.

Hostels are separate for genders, described as well-furnished with free Wi-Fi and 24/7 security. The canteen serves hygienic food at reasonable prices. Where MACE stands out unusually for an engineering college is in sports: a 50-meter swimming pool, an indoor stadium with a 3000+ capacity, and courts for almost every major sport. Social life revolves around the two main fests: Takshak (tech) and Sanskriti (arts). Clubs are active, with the IEEE and ASME chapters receiving particular praise. A consistent positive in reviews is the absence of campus politics or strikes, which students appreciate for maintaining an uninterrupted academic environment. The main gripe? Being in a high-range area, water scarcity can sometimes be an issue.

Student Reviews: What MACE Alumni Really Think

Sifting through student feedback paints a coherent picture. The positives are repeated like a mantra: great learning environment, supportive faculty, good infrastructure, and satisfactory placements for those without arrears. The campus is loved for its vibe and activities. The lack of political disruption is a huge plus for families and students who just want to study.

The negatives are practical, not catastrophic. The water problem is the most frequent complaint. The sheer size of the campus can be exhausting. There’s an old, unverified review criticizing the quality of education, but this is heavily outweighed by recent praise for the faculty. On balance, the sentiment is overwhelmingly positive for what MACE is—a reliable, government-aided college offering a solid ROI. Nobody’s pretending it’s IIT-Madras, but few are complaining about the value they received.

Verdict: Is Mar Athanasius College of Engineering Worth It?

Yes, for the right student. MACE is an excellent choice if you have a KEAM rank in the broad 7,000-25,000 range and are seeking a reputable, stable, and affordable engineering education in Kerala. Its strengths are undeniable: the NAAC A+ grade and autonomous status signal quality, the fee structure is incredibly accessible, and the scholarship support is exceptional. You’ll get a peaceful campus, decent infrastructure, and a shot at placements with major IT firms if you apply yourself.

Who should look elsewhere? If your primary goal is a sky-high placement package from product-based companies, or you crave the brand name of a top-100 NIRF institute, MACE isn’t that. The median salary is modest, and the location, while scenic, is a bit removed from Kochi’s urban hustle. But if you want a no-drama, value-focused engineering degree that won’t burden your family financially, MACE is one of the most sensible options in the state. It’s a college that does the fundamentals very well, and in the often-overpriced world of technical education, that’s a virtue worth considering.
