About ZCOER

Zeal College of Engineering and Research (ZCOER) in Pune’s Narhe area is a study in contrasts. For students with MHT-CET percentiles in the mid-80s, it’s a pragmatic choice—a private, autonomous college with an ‘A+’ NAAC grade that delivers a Savitribai Phule Pune University degree without the cutthroat competition or the sky-high fees of Pune’s top-tier institutes. The infrastructure is modern, the library is open 24/7 during exams, and the annual fest is a genuine highlight. But talk to the students, and you’ll hear about a strict, almost school-like disciplinary culture, a location that feels isolated from Pune’s core, and placement outcomes that vary wildly depending on whether you’re in Computer Engineering or Civil. It’s a college that serves a specific need, but you need to know exactly what you’re signing up for.

Zeal College of Engineering and Research — Quick Facts

  • Location: Narhe, Pune, Maharashtra. Near the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway (NH48).
  • Established: 2007.
  • Affiliation & Status: Affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Private and Autonomous (from 2024-2025).
  • Accreditation: NAAC ‘A+’ Grade. Several UG programs are NBA accredited or under evaluation.
  • Flagship Programs: B.Tech in Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence & Data Science (AI&DS).
  • Approx. Annual B.Tech Fee (Open Category): INR 1.3 - 1.4 Lakhs.
  • Placement Average (2024): INR 4.5 LPA.

Courses and Academic Programs at Zeal College of Engineering and Research

ZCOER offers a standard suite of engineering programs under the SPPU umbrella, but with a key recent change: it gained academic autonomy starting in the 2024-2025 batch. That means first-year students are now on a curriculum designed by the college under the NEP 2020 framework, which could mean more relevant syllabi down the line—though it’s too early to gauge the impact.

The intake is sizable, with about 900+ UG seats. Computer and Mechanical Engineering are the largest departments with 180 seats each, followed by E&TC and IT at 120. The newer, trendier programs—AI&DS and Robotics & Automation—have 60 seats each and are marketed heavily. The MBA program is also offered, with specializations in Marketing, Finance, and HR.

Faculty-wise, it’s a mixed bag. You’ll find supportive teachers, especially in the first and second years, who are known to help with notes and exam prep. But the percentage of PhD holders among the ~150 faculty is estimated at around 17-20%, which is decent but not exceptional for an ‘A+’ graded institution. The college has over 50 industry MoUs, including with Tata Strive and iTech Robotics, which primarily support lab infrastructure for the robotics program.

Zeal College of Engineering and Research Placements: Packages, Companies & Reality Check

This is where you need to read between the lines. The official placement cell publishes numbers that tell one story; student reviews on forums like CollegeDunia and Shiksha tell another.

The headline figure is the highest package, which was INR 13.5 LPA in 2024 from a digital solutions firm. They’ll also mention a historical high of INR 18 LPA from rtCamp in 2021-22. But these are outliers, often involving just one or two students, sometimes from off-campus efforts. The more representative number is the average package, which has hovered around INR 4.5 LPA for the past few years. Based on student reports, the median package—what a typical placed student might get—is likely closer to INR 3 - 3.5 LPA.

The placement percentage claim is ~80% for eligible students. The consensus from alumni is that this is optimistic. For Computer and IT, a 60-70% on-campus placement rate seems more realistic. For core branches like Mechanical and Civil, it’s significantly tougher, with many students relying on off-campus drives or further studies.

Recruiters are a familiar list of IT and consulting mass recruiters: TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Capgemini, and Cognizant are the most consistent. Amazon and Microsoft recruit occasionally. For core engineering, names like JCB and Bosch appear. About 70% of offers are from the IT/software services sector.

The verdict? If you’re in a CS-related branch and you manage your expectations, you’ll likely land a job. But don’t bank on the brochure’s top numbers. For core branches, you’re largely on your own.

Fees and Financial Aid at Zeal College of Engineering and Research

As a private college under the Maharashtra Fee Regulating Authority (FRA), fees are category-based. For the open category, the annual tuition for B.Tech programs is in the range of INR 1,30,000 to INR 1,40,000. Over four years, tuition alone will cost about INR 5.2-5.6 lakhs.

Living expenses add up. The college only has a girls' hostel on campus, costing INR 30,000-40,000 per year with mess. Male students must find accommodation in private PGs or flats in Narhegaon, which can run INR 2,500-4,000 per month. Adding food and other costs, the total 4-year expenditure can easily reach INR 6.5 to 8.5 lakhs.

For financial aid, the college facilitates government scholarships through the MAHADBT portal for eligible EBC, SC, ST, and OBC students. There’s no mention of substantial merit-based scholarships from the institute itself.

Admissions: Eligibility, Cutoffs & Selection Process

Admission for B.Tech is primarily through the Maharashtra state entrance exam, MHT-CET. JEE Main scores are also accepted but are less common. The process is centralized via the DTE Maharashtra CAP rounds.

The cutoffs give you a clear picture of the college’s standing. For the 2024 cycle, Computer Engineering required a percentile between 88.5 and 89.8—solid, but not in the top tier. IT was slightly lower at 86.5-87.5, and the new AI&DS program cut off around 84-85. The gap is stark for core branches: Mechanical and Civil Engineering often have cutoffs as low as 15-30 percentile, filling seats through later CAP rounds.

This percentile spread directly influences the classroom dynamic and is a root cause of the “crowd quality” complaints you’ll read about. There is a management quota (about 20% of seats), which requires direct contact with the administration and, inevitably, a higher fee.

For MBA, admissions are through MAH-MBA-CET, CAT, or CMAT. M.Tech admissions require a GATE score.

Campus, Hostels and Student Life

The campus, part of an 11-acre complex, is universally praised. The buildings are modern, labs are well-equipped (the robotics lab with iTech support is a highlight), and the library is a major asset with a 24-hour reading hall during exams. There’s a large ground for cricket and football, and facilities for other sports.

But the student life experience comes with caveats. The location in Narhe is a common gripe. It’s a developing, dusty area on the outskirts with heavy traffic. The nearest metro station (Swargate) is 8-9 km away. For students craving Pune’s famous cultural and social scene, it’s a trek.

The hostel is for girls only, rated around 3.5/5 for basic, triple-sharing accommodation. Boys live off-campus in a student-saturated area. The canteen food gets an average 3/5 rating. Wi-Fi is available but reportedly spotty outside labs and the library.

The social highlight is the annual fest “Udaan,” which gets big names and is well-organized. Beyond that, the culture is what you make of it, often within smaller friend groups.

Student Reviews: What Zeal College of Engineering and Research Alumni Really Think

Scouring Reddit (r/pune, r/mht_cet), Quora, and review portals reveals a consistent pattern. The positives are tangible: “value for money,” “good infrastructure,” and “helpful teachers for university exams.” For a student with an 85-90 CET percentile who didn’t get into COEP or PICT, Zeal is a logical, affordable backup.

The negatives are about environment and control. The phrase “school-like discipline” appears constantly. Faculty are known to call parents for attendance lapses. The 75% rule is strictly enforced, which students say hampers external internship opportunities. The “crowd” is frequently described as uneven, with a noticeable local, rowdy element that can be off-putting to outsiders.

One paraphrased Reddit comment sums it up: “Infrastructure is 5-star, but the programming culture is almost zero. You have to learn everything from YouTube.” Another bluntly states, “If you have low marks and a low budget, go for it. But don’t expect an ‘IIT-style’ culture.”

Verdict: Is Zeal College of Engineering and Research Worth It?

ZCOER is a specific solution for a specific problem. It’s worth serious consideration if you are a student with an MHT-CET percentile between 85 and 90, are budget-conscious, and primarily want a stable, accredited engineering degree from a Pune university with a decent shot at an IT job. The ‘A+’ NAAC grade and new autonomy status are legitimate quality markers, and the physical infrastructure is excellent.

You should probably look elsewhere if you prioritize a vibrant, autonomous campus life, are entering a core engineering branch with high placement hopes, or are sensitive to a rigid, disciplined academic environment. The college’s strict oversight and remote location are real trade-offs.

Ultimately, Zeal is a functional, mid-tier private engineering college. It will give you the degree and the platform, but the onus for maximizing the outcome—through self-study, external projects, and networking—falls almost entirely on you. Go in with that understanding, and it can be a viable launchpad.
