A specialist syllabus, not one national template
MPT study builds advanced physiotherapy knowledge around a specialty while extending clinical reasoning and research skills. Course names and exact papers vary by university. Read the curriculum for the programme and cohort you are considering: a list of subjects from one provider can illustrate how an MPT is organised, but it does not define the syllabus at every institution.
The University of Delhi’s MPT course regulations describe a two-year, four-semester programme combining classroom teaching, clinical training, research activities, presentations, case discussions and a dissertation. The RK University curriculum index links specialty papers across later semesters and identifies areas such as cardiovascular and pulmonary sciences, musculoskeletal and sports sciences, neuromuscular sciences, paediatric sciences and women’s health. The exact sequence and specialty selection arrangements belong to that university’s curriculum.
Advanced assessment and clinical reasoning
Students extend the assessment skills developed during BPT. Depending on the specialty, that can involve a detailed history, movement or functional assessment, selecting appropriate outcome measures, identifying risks, documenting a clinical impression and deciding when a case needs another professional’s input. The aim is not to memorise a single treatment recipe; it is to explain why an assessment and plan fit a particular patient, what evidence supports that choice and how progress will be reviewed.
Clinical reasoning develops through case discussions, practical examinations, presentations and supervised patient work. Delhi University’s regulations specifically include presentations and case discussions alongside clinical training. Learners may need to prepare case records, defend their interpretation, communicate with patients and care teams, and reflect on the difference between an ideal plan and what is feasible in a particular setting. Local curriculum documents determine which placements, case categories and evaluation methods are required.
Specialty coursework
Specialty papers build depth in a clinical field. Musculoskeletal and orthopaedic study may examine pain, movement, injury, postoperative rehabilitation and functional recovery. Neurological or neuromuscular programmes may focus on movement, balance, motor control and rehabilitation after neurological conditions. Cardiopulmonary study may address exercise capacity, respiratory function and rehabilitation in relevant medical contexts. Sports streams may include injury management, performance demands and return-to-activity decisions. Paediatrics and women's health are also offered by some universities.
Those descriptions are broad topic families, not promises about the papers at a particular college. A stream called “Sports Sciences” might include a wider exercise and performance emphasis than “Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.” A curriculum may provide electives, a required specialty or a menu of named degrees. Compare the actual unit titles, hours, practical competencies and clinical placements. The BLDE 2026-27 notice lists five distinct programmes in Musculoskeletal, Neuro, Cardio-Pulmonary, Sports, and Pediatrics and Neonatal Sciences. The Jamia MPT page lists Sports Sciences, Musculoskeletal Sciences, Neurosciences and Cardiopulmonary Sciences. Neither list should be read as an exhaustive national set.
Evidence, research and dissertation
Research training equips students to ask a focused question, search and appraise literature, select an appropriate method and communicate results honestly. A course can include journal discussions, seminar presentations, research methods, statistics or dissertation supervision, but the precise credit and assessment structure must be checked in the current syllabus. Delhi University’s regulations specify research activities and a dissertation as part of the course outline. RK University’s stated outcomes include research skills and the ability to explain methods and conclusions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
A dissertation is more than a final written assignment. It can require a supervisor, research proposal, ethics approval, access to a clinical site, recruitment or records permissions, data collection, analysis and a presentation or viva. Ask when the project begins and how clinical rotations fit around it. A sound project can be modest in scale; a clear question and defensible method matter more than an ambitious claim that exceeds the available evidence.
Practical and clinical learning
Clinical learning should connect classroom concepts with supervised practice. Students may encounter patients in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, specialty clinics or community settings, depending on the institution’s arrangements. Rotations can expose learners to cases across disciplines before or alongside deeper work in the selected specialty. The programme prospectus should state whether placements are guaranteed, which sites are used, how travel works and what supervision arrangements apply.
Practical skill development can include examination, exercise prescription, therapeutic techniques, patient education and monitoring outcomes. Students also need communication, consent, safety and documentation skills. The curriculum should explain how practical competence is assessed and what level of responsibility a trainee may take. A programme page that advertises “clinical exposure” alone does not reveal the case mix, hours, supervision or clinical equipment available; request the rotation plan when comparing courses.
Assessment through the semesters
MPT assessment commonly combines written examinations with practical work, clinical performance and research components, but the precise mix is set by the university. Delhi University describes semester-end examinations and successful completion of attendance, theory, practical and dissertation requirements. Other programmes may have internal assessments, case presentations, viva examinations, journal reviews or specialty-specific practicals.
Read the rules for attendance and reassessment as carefully as the paper list. Clinical postings can have separate minimum attendance or case-log expectations. A dissertation may have a proposal deadline, progress reviews, submission format and viva. These requirements affect workload and completion time, especially if research approvals or clinical access take longer than expected.
Compare two curriculum documents carefully
When a college and affiliating university publish separate syllabi, identify which one controls the award and which one supplies local teaching details. Check the document year, approval status, effective cohort and whether there is a more recent revision. A syllabus PDF can remain available after replacement. Ask the department whether the displayed papers are active for the intake you plan to join.
Compare learning outcomes rather than relying only on course names. Look for advanced assessment, specialty theory, supervised clinical practice, research methods, ethics, dissertation requirements and a path to integrate findings into care. Check how electives are allocated and whether a specialty is available only if enough students enrol. These practical details can matter more than the number of specialisation labels on a marketing page.
What to request before enrolment
Ask the programme office for the current curriculum and semester plan, clinical rotation schedule, specialty-selection rules and dissertation calendar. Confirm where clinical placements happen, who supervises them and whether travel or accommodation costs are separate. Request the examination regulations and attendance requirements, not only a brochure summary. If the curriculum has recently changed, ask which version applies to your batch.
An MPT syllabus should help you see how knowledge, clinical decision-making and research fit together. The degree can provide a structured route to advanced study, but the learning experience depends on the actual specialty, faculty, case exposure, facilities and project support. A careful curriculum comparison gives a more realistic picture than assuming that every programme with the MPT title teaches the same set of papers.
