The Master of Physiotherapy, commonly written MPT or M.P.T., is a postgraduate degree for graduates who want deeper training in physiotherapy practice, a chosen clinical area, research or teaching. It builds on an undergraduate physiotherapy qualification rather than serving as a substitute for one. A student normally enters after a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) or an institutionally accepted BSc in Physiotherapy. The precise qualification, internship length, marks and recognition conditions are set by the university and its current admission rules.
An MPT is different from BPT in level and emphasis. BPT develops the foundational knowledge and supervised clinical experience required for entry into the profession. MPT study asks a learner to assess more complex cases, justify choices with evidence, work with specialist teams and build advanced expertise in a narrower field. It is also distinct from an MHA, which focuses on health-service management, and from a general MSc in exercise science or sports science, which may not qualify as a physiotherapy degree. The title alone does not turn the graduate into a physician, orthopaedic surgeon or medical specialist.
The strongest MPT programmes combine classroom study with practical work rather than treating specialist knowledge as a list of techniques. The University of Delhi’s course regulations describe a two-year, four-semester programme involving classroom teaching, clinical training, research activities, presentations, case discussions and a dissertation. That structure gives a useful picture of the different kinds of work a learner may encounter, but it is a University of Delhi example, not a binding template for every institution. Delhi University’s MPT regulations also connect completion to attendance, theory and practical examinations and dissertation requirements.
Clinical learning puts assessment and clinical reasoning at the centre. Students may practise gathering a history, interpreting functional limitations, selecting appropriate examination measures, setting goals with a patient and evaluating whether a plan is helping. The decisions are made within the learner’s training and supervision arrangements, professional rules and the scope of the clinical team. The programme should help students recognise when a case needs referral, medical review or another discipline’s input as well as when physiotherapy can contribute.
Research training matters because specialisation is not simply about repeating a familiar intervention. Learners need to read studies, judge how closely evidence fits a patient or service, explain uncertainty and record outcomes. Delhi University’s regulations include research work and a dissertation; the RK University curriculum page describes outcomes in critical thinking, clinical analysis, evidence-based practice and research communication. Depending on the institution, a dissertation may involve a literature review, clinical audit, observational study, intervention study or another approved project. Methods, ethics approval and data access are set locally.
Two years across four semesters is a common format in the university examples reviewed here. Delhi University describes a full-time four-semester course, and Jamia Millia Islamia lists MPT as two years and four semesters. BLDE (Deemed to be University) lists each of its five MPT streams at two years for its 2026-27 intake. Those independent examples make two years a helpful planning expectation, not a guarantee that every course with a similar label has the same timetable, mode or completion requirements.
Read the duration beside the full award, institution, delivery mode and cohort. A course page may show only the standard academic duration, while the prospectus explains examinations, dissertation submission, clinical postings, attendance rules or leave that affect actual completion. Confirm whether the programme is regular and full time, what each semester contains, and whether clinical rotations or project work continue outside classroom terms. An older prospectus or a third-party listing may not reflect a revised programme structure.
MPT offerings commonly group advanced study around a clinical area. University menus can include musculoskeletal or orthopaedic physiotherapy, neurological or neuromuscular physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy, cardiovascular and pulmonary care, paediatrics, women's health, community rehabilitation, oncology or other areas. No single university offers every option, and names differ. One university may use “Neurosciences” where another uses “Neuromuscular Sciences”; those labels should not be treated as exact curricular equivalents without comparing their syllabus and clinical placement arrangements.
The variations are visible in official course pages. Jamia lists Sports Sciences, Musculoskeletal Sciences, Neurosciences and Cardiopulmonary Sciences. BLDE’s 2026-27 notice names Musculoskeletal Sciences, NeuroSciences, Cardio-Pulmonary Sciences, Sports Sciences, and Pediatrics and Neonatal Sciences. RK University’s curriculum index adds links to semester-specific cardiovascular and pulmonary, musculoskeletal and sports, neuromuscular, paediatric and women's-health papers. These are examples of separate institutional menus, not a national catalogue of compulsory specialisations. Before choosing, check the exact intake’s available stream, whether a separate application is needed, the number of seats and the clinical supervisors or placements available for that stream.
MPT can suit a BPT graduate who wants to strengthen a clinical area, contribute to rehabilitation services, work toward teaching or research, or prepare for a role that values postgraduate training. It can also suit a learner who wants to understand a complicated patient journey across assessment, intervention, follow-up and communication with other professionals. The degree has the most value when its specialty, clinical exposure and research expectations fit the learner’s intended work.
Applicants should be ready for more than classroom revision. A postgraduate programme may require independent reading, careful case documentation, presentations, practical assessments, clinical postings and a substantial research project. The commitment can be demanding for students who have not yet completed a physiotherapy degree, who are unsure about a specialty, or who are expecting the course to function as a short conversion programme from another health degree. Universities define which undergraduate awards are acceptable; do not assume that a general biology, sports or allied-health degree can replace BPT.
Most institution-specific pathways start with an accepted undergraduate physiotherapy qualification. The rest of the test can differ sharply: some universities publish a minimum aggregate, some require an entrance test, some use merit in the qualifying degree, and some permit a distinct bridge-course or work-experience route. Delhi University’s regulations describe BPT or BSc Physiotherapy pathways with different degree-length, internship, experience and category clauses; they also say selection may use CUET or another University-approved mode. For a separate 2026-27 example, BLDE states BPT with at least 50% aggregate subject to NCAHP eligibility and invites online applications. Neither statement is a universal MPT threshold or national exam rule.
Read the admission notice for the target campus and year rather than relying on a search snippet. Check whether the qualifying degree must be full time, how internship is counted, whether the transcript must show completion before counselling, what marks conversion is used and whether a registration or equivalence document is needed. Note the entrance test, paper code, merit formula, reservation relaxations, seat availability, counselling stages and document deadlines. A university can revise a route between sessions, so a previous CUET or university-entrance requirement should not be carried forward without confirmation.
MPT costs depend on the institution, specialisation and fee schedule. Compare the same basis: annual tuition with annual tuition, semester tuition with semester tuition, and full programme totals with full programme totals. A payable invoice can include admission, registration, examination, library, development, welfare, electricity or refundable caution charges. Accommodation, transport, instruments, books, clinical travel and research expenses may sit outside the academic fee table.
The official 2026-27 schedule at Gauhati City University lists four MPT semester payments with a total schedule amount of ₹1,50,000. Of this, it labels ₹72,000 as tuition and ₹10,000 as refundable caution money, alongside other named charges. Its fee table is an institution- and year-specific example, not a market average. Jagan Nath University’s 2026-27 table gives ₹70,000 per semester, while Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation labels ₹2,50,000 per annum for MPT Musculoskeletal Science at its Puducherry campus. These figures use different bases and should not be added or compared as if they were the same charge.
Check what the quoted price includes, whether it is held for the whole cohort, how later-year charges can change, and the refund or security rules. Ask for the programme-specific prospectus and a written fee breakdown if the public table combines multiple programmes. JMI’s page, for example, directs applicants to the current session prospectus for course fees rather than publishing a tuition amount on the MPT profile. Do not use a nearby university’s amount or a broad database average to estimate the exact bill for a course.
MPT graduates may pursue advanced clinical practice in their chosen area, work in hospitals and rehabilitation centres, contribute to sports or community programmes, teach, conduct research or develop private-practice services. The RK University programme outcomes name possible settings such as hospitals, private clinics, government and non-government organisations, academia and research institutes. That describes the kinds of professional environments its programme considers; it is not evidence that every graduate is placed in those settings. Hiring depends on employer needs, experience, location, legal scope and the candidate’s actual skills.
Specialist training can be relevant in musculoskeletal rehabilitation after injury or surgery, neurological rehabilitation, sports performance and return to activity, cardiopulmonary recovery, paediatrics or women's health. Work may include assessment, treatment planning, monitoring progress, education and coordination with other members of a care team. The responsibilities available to an individual depend on applicable regulation, institutional credentialing, competence and supervision. Do not read the degree title as a guaranteed licence, independent practice right, salary band or job outcome.
For research-focused students, an MPT dissertation may be a first step toward doctoral study, clinical research or a teaching role, but each post has its own entry criteria. Academic careers can require additional qualifications, teaching experience or research output. A clinical career may require professional registration or other approvals under the rules in force where the graduate works. Confirm those requirements with the appropriate authority rather than assuming a university course page fully describes professional practice rights.
Start with the award title and the exact specialty being offered in the intended session. Then compare entry criteria, the BPT duration and internship accepted, selection method, total programme length, semester structure and attendance conditions. Look for detail on clinical rotations, patient groups, teaching sites, dissertation supervision and the balance between academic and practical work. Ask how a specialty is chosen, whether it is guaranteed after admission and how many supervisors or placements are available.
Review the syllabus as a sequence rather than as a list of impressive subject names. Does early coursework build advanced assessment and research methods before specialty practice? Are practical and clinical assessments clear? Is the dissertation timeline realistic? Are students expected to complete case presentations, journal reviews, seminars or interdepartmental postings? The Delhi regulations specify case discussions, presentations, research, clinical training and a dissertation; the RK University index exposes semester-specific papers. These examples show what to look for without assuming either institution’s exact design applies elsewhere.
Finally, build a cost and logistics plan. Obtain current tuition and compulsory charges for each year, clarify refundable deposits, hostel and transport costs, clinical placement travel, equipment and project expenses, and determine when each amount is due. Confirm application dates and document requirements from the university. A low first-year amount is not necessarily a low full-course cost if later semesters or mandatory charges differ.
MPT is most useful when the applicant already has an accepted physiotherapy qualification and can name the clinical, research or teaching direction they hope to develop. It adds depth through advanced clinical reasoning, specialty learning and research rather than replacing the undergraduate foundation. The title alone cannot tell you which stream is taught, how much clinical exposure is available, what a graduate may legally do, or what the programme will cost.
Before accepting an offer, match the official prospectus to the campus and academic year; confirm the specialty and selection route; compare the syllabus and supervised training; and obtain a complete fee schedule. Then weigh those details against your goals, location and financial plan. A carefully matched programme can broaden a physiotherapist’s expertise, but the outcome still depends on the learner’s practice, the institution’s training environment and the rules and opportunities in the place where they intend to work.
Loading programmes and admission routes.
MPT entry is normally through an accepted physiotherapy bachelor’s degree, but the degree length, internship, marks and selection route are institution-specific. For example, Delhi University’s regulations accept specified BPT/BSc (PT) pathways, including a 4½-year degree with six months of internship or narrowly defined bridge/work-experience alternatives, with category-specific marks. BLDE’s 2026-27 notice asks for BPT with at least 50% aggregate subject to its stated NCAHP criteria; CSJMU lists BPT with 55% (50% SC/ST). These are examples, not one national threshold; confirm the current prospectus and your exact award.
An MPT may support advanced physiotherapy work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, private clinics, sports services, community organisations, academia or research, depending on the specialty, employer and local rules. University curricula describe clinical reasoning, supervised specialty learning, research and dissertation work as relevant preparation. A postgraduate award does not guarantee a job, salary, teaching appointment, registration or independent practice right; verify current professional requirements and build experience for the role.
